Started watching it on Amazon Prime last night, I'm hooked already.

Haven't read the books it's based off, which makes a nice change for me!

Anyone else?

Thatsnotevenaword Apparantly they tried to keep the left handedness in but because Sam is right handed it was too problematic and they gave up.

ThatsNotEvenAWord · 19/05/2015 11:40

Ah fair enough, it would be really hard to fake that!

Trumpton · 24/05/2015 09:49

Question please.

In one of the episodes the men were playing a brutal game of what I would call Cammag.
A sort of no holds hockey. Can anyone remember which episode it was in ?
Thank you.

Trumpton · 24/05/2015 10:33

Found it . Episode 4 after the boar hunt about 49 mins in .
We play a no holds barred game here on St Stephens day. ( 26th December ) North v South. Line of N/S to be decided arbitrarily at the start of match. Stick range from lumps of timber to bits of hedges. Carnage !

Grantaire · 24/05/2015 18:02

I'm really missing my weekly Outlander.

Trumpton, I had a go at shinty when I was in Scotland last. It's ruddy brutal but good fun. I like that episode. Dougal taking out his frustrations after Geordie's death was well done I thought. Is Cammag Manx? I think my ILs watched a match when visiting for the IOM TT.

Jane, I read BJR's obsession with Jamie (particularly the sexual determination and fascination) as beginning when Jamie refused him at Fort William four years before the series starts. As Jamie says to Claire "it's personal wi' me". I have no doubt that his obsession deepened at Wentworth. I don't know about him shooting at Jamie being a sign of callous disregard. Gabaldon seems to use that as a trope. See Laoghaire in Voyager for example. She also seems to use rape and sexual violence as a bar for measuring feeling or moving action along. I think if I analysed it too much I'd end up not enjoying it as much as I do. So I shan't. Grin

Trumpton · 25/05/2015 08:11

Yes cammag is Manx, will look out for any games over the next few weeks, hotting up for TT now Grin

I was only aware of the St Stephens day match but, of course, there might be impromptu matches on various campsites.

ThatsNotEvenAWord · 29/05/2015 14:58

2 days to go!

SenecaFalls · 30/05/2015 14:35

I've seen the finale. It is very well done and very powerful. Tour-de-force acting by TM, SH, and CB.

Jane054848 · 30/05/2015 18:10

Oh I'm glad it's good. The acting was amazing in the last episode. I sort of forgot it was just acting.

Grantaire, you are right, best not to engage moral senses too closely and just enjoy it... I did read an interview with the author of the books where she said she'd read 3 books in a row where the heroine was a virgin who got raped, so she decided it would be a nice change to have that happen to the man instead...

Sansarya · 31/05/2015 17:20

Wow, that was intense and that scene made Game of Thrones look like CBeebies Confused Amazing acting all around though, I wouldn't be surprised if all three feature in various TV awards this year.

SaulGood · 31/05/2015 19:46

It's terribly uncomfortable viewing. I watched it at midnight last night and then couldn't sleep. It was well acted and SH in particular was very good. I think on balance I would have preferred a bit more of Jamie's recovery and healing and perhaps slightly less screen time given to the flash back scenes. An hour's not enough though. Sorry to see them saying goodbye to the Rupert, Angus and Willie. We won't see them again until the end of DIA iirc (unless they tinker with stuff).

Onwards to series 2. Have they announced any casting decisions?

Sansarya · 31/05/2015 20:01

I'm wondering if they're going to keep the prologue-y bit of the second book or just cut straight to Claire and Jamie in France?

SaulGood · 31/05/2015 20:33

Dramatically, I reckon they'll leave it till the end. I think it has good shock value, the opening bit and you spend the book wondering how they get back to the beginning iyswim. Really not sure they'll see it that way for the adaptation though.

I want to know who's playing Roger. I have no clear image of him in my head tbh. Essentially, you could do season 2 without him. Or Brianna I suppose and just concentrate on France/the start of the rising. They are in it though aren't they? Please tell me the twitter begging came to nowt and Karen Gillen isn't Brianna?

I assume TM is playing Alex as well?

Sansarya · 31/05/2015 20:53

If that's the case then poor TM won't know who he is by the end of this! I think Alex is meant to be younger so they'll probably cast an actor in his twenties.

SaulGood · 31/05/2015 21:07

SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T READ DIA...

I think the problem with casting Alex is that not only does he look so like Jack that Claire and Jamie think he is Jack when they meet him for the first time, for reasons of plot, he has to look more like Frank than Jack does. So they need somebody who looks more like Tobias Menzies than Tobias Menzies. Who could that be, eh?

Grin
SaulGood · 31/05/2015 21:08

I guess they can get round the younger thing because he's really not well is he? He's sickly and unhealthy from the point he turns up in the books. Maybe TM will play him after all.

ThatsNotEvenAWord · 31/05/2015 21:27

Oh my goodness, just watched it. It's left me thinking all sorts of questions about how they'll adapt DIA. That's the only book that's ever made me cry out loud, proper sobbed.

I was a bit sad they left out the cave sex

GREYCROW · 31/05/2015 21:42

Where are you all watching this? I loved the books...

Trumpton · 31/05/2015 21:48

I watched 1-15 on findtv on my iPad. The first two episodes are free then you can buy points to watch the rest. But it was only about £7 in all.

Did not want to watch on Amazon prime even on free trial .

Jane054848 · 01/06/2015 11:17

Crikey that was intense. Amazing acting from SH. He's incredible.

SPOILERS-

I think they would struggle to have TM play both parts because they have scenes together. On the other hand, who else looks like him?

It must be tricky to cast when there's such a big deal about resemblances. If they get that far, how would they ever cast adult William, who absolutely has to look like the relevant person?

SaulGood · 01/06/2015 13:56

I watch it on Amazon Instant.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 01/06/2015 14:01

Karen Gillan isn't tall enough for Briana surely? Isn't she practically 6 foot?

Sansarya · 01/06/2015 14:03

GREYCROW, I'm watching it on Amazon but there are various streaming sites where you'll be able to find it. A google of "watch Outlander online free" should do it.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 01/06/2015 14:03

I think with William though it's more mannerisms and how he hold his head etc rather than a purely physical resemblance. Which might make it easier to cast?

OstentatiousBreastfeeder · 01/06/2015 14:19

Jesus H Roosevelt Christ, that was a bit of a rollercoaster!
