Started watching it on Amazon Prime last night, I'm hooked already.

Haven't read the books it's based off, which makes a nice change for me!

Anyone else?

The books are very graphic in all the sex scenes/torture/rape chapters. I won't spoil it but Jamie goes through a very harrowing time in one of the books, it was very upsetting.

Turn that bit with Jamie is the bit I am wondering how they will be deal with in the tv series.

I watched the first couple having heard so much about it and disappointingly wasn't that taken with it. As others have said, all the nudity seemed a bit gratuitous. Should I persevere?

What I did like was the fact that a lot of it was filmed near me so me and DH spent a lot of time going 'oh look it's....." That was good fun.

I think I know which bit you mean re Jamie and uncomfortable viewing. I suspect it'll be told through the aftermath iyswim. I really don't know how they do that on screen.

I know they're keeping in the "tawsing" scene too which is differently uncomfortable but quite an important scene in some respects.

Piffpaffpoff, it took a few episodes to grow on me. I enjoy it more now the characters are better developed.

I'm not squeamish at all but the double flogging scene was horrific. I couldn't watch some of it. The make-up and SFX team did really too well.

I'm reading the books now, couldn't help myself! I'm still within the series, plot-wise, about 2/3 way through book 1.

It's surprised me how much dialogue from the book they've included in the script, and how everything, even the characters, are all near-identical to the descriptions of them in the book Shock They've done really well haven't they?

It takes her a long time to write a new book, so don't rattle through them all too fast Grin

To be fair they should have left some of the dialogue behind. Hmm

They have been very respectful to the characters and to the text. Ron Moore's wife is a huge fan of the books so he knew a lot about the fan base. I have read all the books and I think the first four are the best, it does seem to go on a ramble from book 5 onwards.

One of the things that I do like about the later books is that they depict romantic (and sexually active) central figures who are older: Jamie is in his late 50s and Claire is in her early 60s.

I first read the books at uni 10 years ago and have reread them many times. I think they've done a good job of staying pretty faithful and have kept many lines in eg Jamie's jokes. Just had a mini breakdown having finished episode 8 on Amazon but then found out it's back on Sunday thank goodness! I love all the Gaelic and think the casting is good; the Mackenzie brothers are the only ones really different from how I imagined them. And I love the theme tune too!

Okay, so has anyone seen the new episode? What did you think of that punishment specific scene after he rescues her? I wasn't sure what to think... I mean, they almost made it feel funny and I felt myself wanting to laugh, and yet in the back of my mind I'm going, "Uh, but wait, that's kind-of abuse..." I'd read the bit in the book and was taken off-guard by it (though I guess I understand it within the cultural context) but just assumed they'd take it out for today's viewers!

Anyone else?

I'm watching it tonight when DS is in bed. Its a strange scene isn't it! I guess it sets some things up for later on?

I think they dealt with the punishment as well as they could, using Jamie's viewpoint to explain why it occurred. I was less thrilled with the other plot changes especially the foreshadowing of Laoghaire's jealous scheming and the seemingly complete exclusion of Hamish from the succession to the Laird's title.

Ellisisland · 05/04/2015 20:19

I think they handled the scene as well as they could. The bit missing though was in the book they have a long ride back to the castle and talk a lot on the way which helps see things from each others point of view.
With regards to Hamish I may be wrong but as I understood it in the Scottish laird 'system' when a laird dies the members of the clan can vote for who they would like to replace him. It has to be a family member but it doesn't always go father to son. As Hamish is likely to still be a child it would be either Dougal or Jamie who would be eligible. Jamie is out of the loop after not pledging his allegiance and marrying an Englishwoman so that just leaves Dougal. Maybe they are going to mention Hamish in later episodes as Dougal did bring up his parenthood in this one?

They did change quite a lot in this episode.

I am looking forward to Gellis getting back on the scene hopefully next week.

I thought it was handled quite well but I missed their conversation on the walk. Can't believe we have to wait a week now!

I love the books and the series has been great so far. I've got Amazon Prime but bought the DVD recently too.

I think so far it's been really good and true to the books. It'll be interesting to see how people who haven't read the books take THE episode with Jamie and BJR I think it's on in 3 weeks or so.

I absolutely love Tobias Menzies as both Frank and BJ R Confused

Oh gosh, I'm dreading the Jamie/BJR scene. Hope it's not too graphic, but they've not really set a precedent for shying away from things... Really looking forward to Lallybroch though! Presumably that'll be week after next. Now a whole week until Geillis... yeesh, that woman creeps me out to no end.

THE episode with Jamie and BJR

Oh my goodness, I want to know what this is. Do I need to prepare myself? Maybe I should buy the book and quickly read it first....

Dancing I don't want to give anything away but be prepared for unexpected and shocking. I think it's the part most Outlander fans are dreading and the bit many skip over if they re read the books. Wink

Rape, incest, murder, what could it be? Is claire pregnant? Anything to do with that? Dammit, I'm just going to get the book. Hope its on kindle!

Arghhh I am, but then I'm spoiling it for myself aren't I. Maybe I'd just like a hint, in case its horrific, so I can prepare myself. Hmm, I'm not sure though. . Ok I might pm you in the next day or two after I've made up my mind for sure. Thanks for the offer Grin

It's strange, I didn't read the 'punishment' scene as very funny in the books, it made me very uneasy and sad for Claire, and disappointed in Jamie (and the long ride back to the castle and his little anecdotes about how much he loved being beaten Hmm did nothing to make me feel better about it either).

But they made it into almost a joke, and she wasn't very angry for long Confused
