Happy thread 89!!!! Shame we didnt make it to 90 for the finale...Ah well!

Btw there is a thread in dadsnet which has been going since 2011. Guess how many posts it has? Grin

Morelikeguidelines · 27/03/2015 08:43

My school history teacher went to Loughborough so I guess it is the place to be.

I loved history at school and did A level for which we studied my personal favourite (and many other people's!) Henry VIII. Would have liked to do a history degree but foolishly did not realise that you do not need a law degree to be a lawyer.

Is no excuse though as could go back to studying one day.

WickedWenchOfTheNorth · 27/03/2015 08:45

Some property porn. To bad about f-ing neigbours and it's an area known for it's mosquitos in summertime Hmm

Morning.

I hope you have a good time Fancy. Even if your friend does not normally whoop and perve at the telly she will be tonight, I promise you. It is soooooo good.

My DH was at Loughborough. I spent far too much time there. Purple Nasties and pizza from the Purple Onion. And I have a Loughborough scarf somewhere, as it was nicer than Lancaster one. And a rugby shirt what I nicked.

Loving all the historical talk. I had an amazing history teacher. Looking back she was totes wench. She left while I was in sixth form and we hired a stripper for her (this was the 80s, but even so WTF?) to go into a class she was teaching. He walked in dressed as tarzan, wiggled a bit, turned round and died. He was an ex-pupil and was mortified. She died laughing and made him go through with it. Thankfully only to a thong Grin

IssyStark · 27/03/2015 10:06

Morning all!

Looking forward to the rewatch later Wink

Fancy have a great weekend! May it contain many cocktails and some swagger.

Sparkles thanks for the excellent image of the CoS in the last thread.

Cinn and all other L'boro related wenches, you lucky things! I always wanted to go to L'boro and was offered a place there for my postgrad librarianship but Sheffield offered more money, so what's a girl to do? I did manage a weekend there once as part of a film soc event. The L'boro filmsoc lot were always lovely and their chair in 1993 was absolutely lush (unlike Warwick [1] who were always rather up themselves and annoyed that they never won the Best Student Film Soc award whereas L'boro, Sheffield and MUFS did)

MLG and MrsB: history mums for the win! DS1 is also getting inculcated with DrIssy's science and engineering bent. He absolutely loves the Osborne look inside books whether they are the history or the science ones. Conversation over breakfast this morning ended up being about the etymology of the names of months, The Roman clanedar, the French revolutionary calendar and from there to the origins of the metric system using a lime to stand in for the earth to show how the kilometre was defined. All ds1 did was ask what was the ninth month.

[1] I did however marry one of them so they weren't all that bad once you got to know them

AnneOfAramis · 27/03/2015 10:23

What this I hear???? You have all watched it already. I can't cope I really cannot cope.

MN mobile appears to like me again.

Laughing at the stripper!

Tonight YAY! Though not yet sure whether to watch it at 9 (with probable interruptions from DH/DCs) or wait till everyone else is in bed and I can gawp in peace... will have to stay off here a bit longer if the latter!

My uni (and DH's) have been mentioned, but not Loughborough Grin

Have got a new cold too I think, bit headachy, but thankfully not bad so far. Still thinking myself lucky as have heard from several friends/acquaintances in the last few days who have had proper bad news of various sorts Sad so am in counting-blessings mode atm.

Morelikeguidelines · 27/03/2015 10:53

Female history teacher from Loughborough was totes wench too! She taught us European history (Francis I v Charles V rivalry and associated matters - my mum still can't get it out of her head from testing me!) which was fascinating.

Male history teacher we had for Henry VIII stuff was also brilliant. If he was in the musketeers would be Treville.

My dd (6) is total history buff. Her teacher is history graduate too so she appreciates it all. Top moment was dd telling class that Leif Eriksson was actually first European to discover America. She also loves Henry VIII stuff and we have a C(K)atherine Parr chant. She is more open minded than me and also loves Egyptians and Romans.

Morelikeguidelines · 27/03/2015 10:54

When I say "too" I mean like you lot (obviously dd is not yet anything graduate!)

MavisGrind · 27/03/2015 10:54

Hang on a frickin minute.....some of you have already watched it Shock Hmm Shock

Oh well.

I shall be watching at 9pm, as nature intended. And by that I mean by no hacking into the States rather than watching in the nude.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 27/03/2015 10:57

Mine love hearing about "the fat king" as he is known here too, and DS loved learning about the Great Fire of London (they are big fans of Roman stuff too). Seems to really catch their imagination. They are getting into Horrible Histories now, although I'm sure they don't get half the jokes!

Morelikeguidelines · 27/03/2015 11:02

Love horrible histories! It rules in our house. What is your favourite song, Inigo?

I do love Richard III's ballad but, strangely, also Henry VII's song.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 27/03/2015 11:14

Not to worry Anne & Mavis, there's more of us who haven't seen it than have.

I also had a fab history teacher, but we had a wildly disjointed curriculum, the only think I can really remember is learning a bit of local history about the American West and Mormons. Whoever had a themed one on one or two subjects development across history had a really good course I think. I avoided it at A-level because I'm rubbish at remembering dates.

Morelikeguidelines · 27/03/2015 11:20

You see remembering dates is something that comes easily to me (remembering numbers generally does). I have always thought it's ridiculous that any exams depend on this because it is something you either can or can't do and doesn't prove you know anything.

IssyStark · 27/03/2015 12:04

MLG history exams don't rely on dates, or at least shouldn't, as an eminent history professor once told me. What matters more is you know what order things happened in and why.

I learnt two dates for my general paper in my finals (when they could ask you anything from the previous three years of study), I used neither and got a first in that paper. Although that might just show I can waffle in a seemingly knowledgeable manner with the best of them Grin

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 27/03/2015 12:07

Badders - my washing is drying on the line...

Hmmm.
Oh. What did I say about the purple nasty last night?

Still, I suppose you didn't spill any...
