Health care related jobs don't pay well in the UK. I'd assume a pay rise for truck driving would factor in the fact that there's a whole lot more to cover in Oz.

How will the dd get a visa if she's no longer a dependent?

I'm suspecting the mum trained to be a midwife because they needed a job that would get them a visa. I mean why else wait 17 years?
