Have started a new one

OP posts:
purplefeathers · 29/01/2015 10:03

This one's making me angry. I'm sure they don't have to move across the globe to spend time together.

'Fresh start'. Hmm, i agree with pp who said perhaps the relationship isn't all it seems.

I'm surprised they even got on the programme tbh.

mummytime · 29/01/2015 10:03

I found it very sad. The daughter just wants to spend time with her parents, and that is pretty rare at 13. The videos from home seemed to have more connection with the girl too.
I really don't like the Mum.
I don't think the Mum does want to spend time with her family. If they live in Wales, why don't they spend more time playing on the beach etc. anyway?

Bowlersarm · 29/01/2015 10:05

What a puzzling episode. The mum has no intention of going. Just a chance to get on the telly.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 29/01/2015 10:06

Dreaming I said exactly the same.
Seems to be that Nerys wants to live on her own and do her own thing all the time. The update says she's not convinced that the career opportunities would be better, but that's not how it came across on the programme. Steve's opportunities were definitely better and the life balances too. I bet he only works down the gym for a social life.

I think they'll find as soon as she turns 18 Bea clears off and makes a life for herself and I hope she does. She certainly won't be torn about staying put for her parents' sake. Poor girl.

Is it the last one tomorrow?

thehumanjam · 29/01/2015 10:07

I just googled the mum. She is an Associate at Eversheds in Cardiff. She will be on a lot more than £40k. They obviously wanted to downplay her salary for some reason.

Vagndidit · 29/01/2015 10:08

Bea will be out of that house like a shot when she's 18, no doubt. Sadly, the parents probably won't be too bothered.

theconstantvacuumer · 29/01/2015 10:09

Even if work/salary in Aus wasn't that different for the mum, there was a massive difference for the dad and that would have meant at least one of them could have spent some proper time either Bea.

InfinitySeven · 29/01/2015 10:09

I'm stilll paused a few minutes into this...DP is home today and keeps talking Envy.

CornChips · 29/01/2015 10:09

Joining you. :) Only saw 20 mins of this episode.... she is an employment lawyer FFS, there are opportunities everywhere- I imagine it would be a really flexible sort of job- not sure if she would have to re-qualify though, did the episode say?

It was a bit sad how Bea was just bubbling over with joy at the paddle boarding because she spent time with her parents.... seemed such a sedate dull activity to me, but she was overjoyed to just be with them.

Cherrypie32 · 29/01/2015 10:11

Grr..hate it when DH works from home Smile

theconstantvacuumer · 29/01/2015 10:11

The Australian lawyer said the transition would be very easy for someone with her experience and skills.

CornChips · 29/01/2015 10:11

Thanks, theconstant. :)

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 29/01/2015 10:15

I work in the same area (currently on May leave) and I don't think that the mother will be on significantly more than 40k, to be honest give the firm, the location of the office she works in and how qualified she is.

thehumanjam · 29/01/2015 10:16

Eversheds are a top law firm, the mum has obviously done very well to achieve what she has. I think her career is her priority at the moment and the law firms in Oz maybe were not as prestigious as the UK. I
hope the Dad will step up to the mark and reduce his hours. However I think Bea wants family time with both parents.

shakemysilliesout · 29/01/2015 10:44

I'm not gonna catch up on this ep. Sounds too sad.same reason I don't like Matilda.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 29/01/2015 10:51

This is tomorrow.

Suckling Family
Wanted Down Under, Series 9 Episode 20 of 20

Having met her while travelling, New Zealand-born Courtenay ended up following the love of his life Helen halfway around the globe and settling down in the UK. Now he's keen to uproot his family and return to the country he calls home.

Close family ties in the UK, however, mean a move would be anything but straightforward for wife Helen. She also worries about work prospects down under.

On a trial week spent living in Auckland, at least some of Helen's concerns are addressed, but it's Courtenay himself who starts to question whether a move is in the family's best interests.

iklboo · 29/01/2015 10:59

Found you!

iklboo · 29/01/2015 11:03

I was sad they barely interacted with Bea while they were in Australia as well. It was all about Nerys. What Nerys wants.....

(Bet she'll be a MIL from hell! Wink).

antimatter · 29/01/2015 11:24

Bea's dad said he spends 20 hours a week in the gym, then later - that he works 10 hours a week there.
So clearly the other 10 hours is his hobby - working out in the gym.
Mother climbs up the greasy pole (I have 100 miles round trip commuting and can tell you how tiring that is and I am mostly on a motorway!) and if you are home at 10 after the day's work you only have time to have shower and sleep if you want to be fresh the next day.

I agree they are cold with each other.
They never touch or hug.
I think they will lose their daughter soon when she will move on with her life.
Sad story Sad

TrendStopper · 29/01/2015 11:33

It was interesting that the daughter was the one who wanted to go. Usually it's one of the parents' life long dream.

Vagndidit · 29/01/2015 11:54

Oooooh. Anyone seen the smackdown on the WDU Facebook page??

"Hi everyone, just a quick message from the team. We love reading all your comments, and welcome feedback on the show, but please be aware that we do sometimes have to moderate comments.

We're unable to allow comments which are rude or abusive about families or family members that appear on the show for example. As we're sure you'll appreciate our families do read our Facebook page, and we're keen to avoid any upset caused by personal attacks."

DreamingOfAHotDrink · 29/01/2015 12:04

They will be on here next, reporting us to MNHQ.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 29/01/2015 12:15

Not seen that, but I think commenting even handedly on what's shown on the programme is very different from being rude, abusive or making personal attacks.

Vagndidit · 29/01/2015 12:24

She's a solicitor so I'm sure legal action could be threatened...Wink

Bakeoffcakes · 29/01/2015 12:26

I've just seen that FB message. Some of the comments are still a little erm direct about the mum.

I do feel very sorry for the daughter.
