Ouch, BOF!

squoosh · 04/02/2015 17:21

I don't normally crack open the wine mid week but having run out of small beer this breakfast time I feel I have no other option.

magimedi · 04/02/2015 17:23

Norty, BOF Grin

I am so excited. I watched episode 2 again last night so as to be super ready for tonight.

I think the only other programme I've ever enjoyed as much was The Jewel in the Crown, back in 1984 - it was wonderful & I longed for it every week with just the same yearning.

squoosh · 04/02/2015 17:26

'I have (Catholic) PILs arriving tonight but luckily MIL is as much of a history nerd as me (& has read the books too) so hopefully she will be keen to watch it too...otherwise it may be a bit of a stand-off!'

Why?? Is it A Musical Audience With The Pope over on ITV?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/02/2015 18:17

Some Catholics are a bit upset with the portrayal of Thomas More, I believe.

BOFster · 04/02/2015 18:21

Seriously though, it is a shame to lose so many posts from this thread- I knew next to bugger all about the Tudors before Wolf Hall started, and I've really enjoyed learning more from the discussion here, even if it has rocketed this month's kindle spend Grin.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/02/2015 19:17

Never mind BoF, you could always go and read a novel about the Pilgrimage of Grace.

Trills · 04/02/2015 19:40

Oh, that's a shame.

TheVestalVirgin · 04/02/2015 20:05

Why are Catholics upset by the portrayal of Thomas More?

Travelledtheworld · 04/02/2015 20:06

I started this thread and am thrilled by the high level of intellectual debate we have had. Most enriching.
(Goes off to Musketeers thread for lusting and dirty fantasies).

Countess, it's funny you should say that- I'm about halfway through an excellent one Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/02/2015 20:11

Because he's a saint. I wish I could link on my phone but if you Google Catholic Herald More wolf Hall you ought to find the article where some bishops are expressing their episcopal outrage.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/02/2015 20:14

Not 'Blanket of the Dark' by John Buchan? Because I read that and thought it was shit, it needed more women characters and a blacksmith Grin

Pantah630 · 04/02/2015 20:18

Since listening to the podcast linked upthread I've gained Tracy Bormans book on Cromwell. This thread is almost as bad as the cookery book one for adding to my library. Lots more on my wish list now. :)

KatieScarlettreregged · 04/02/2015 20:20

I'm guessing Rome don't like Hillarys portrayal of More as someone flawed.
His rep is dearly beloved persecuted martyr.
Not snide reformer-burning torturer, who died to maintain his rep.
(Disclaimer: I have no basis for my Tom More Roman view other than a chat with a colleague and references in books with no proper sources Smile).
Does anyone here know about this? Would love to hear what you think.

BOFster · 04/02/2015 20:21

I'm reading that too, Pantah Grin

TheVestalVirgin · 04/02/2015 20:26

Thank you Smile

TheVestalVirgin · 04/02/2015 20:29

I think More took a huge gamble and it didn't pay off. I think right up until the very end he assumed Henry would cave first and reprieve him.

KatieScarlettreregged · 04/02/2015 20:33

I have the Borman book on Audible. I bought it to listen to on holiday but got sidetracked by The Green Mile.
Will get a grip and listen properly.

KatieScarlettreregged · 04/02/2015 20:38

I think he couldnt climb down from his position. His supporters at home and abroad cried him up as the great scholar, friend of Erasmus, all round top bloke.
He died trapped in his own legend. Exactly as he chose to.
Death was preferable to having to admit he was cowed.
IMO of course.

TheVestalVirgin · 04/02/2015 20:50

Think I agree with you. He ran round the shit until he fell in it. He got so that he began to believe his own hype. Had a rather 'intense' relationship with his daughter too.

KatieScarlettreregged · 04/02/2015 20:54

Mmm hot fishermen.
Come onnnnnnn!!!!!
(Not good at waiting)

JeanneDeMontbaston · 04/02/2015 20:57

All historical fiction needs more women and a blacksmith.

Someone's memoir needs that as a title, actually.

IrenetheQuaint · 04/02/2015 21:13

Did they really just show Henry in the House of Commons? Surely that is massively wrong?

But the opening sequence of More praying as the heretics are tortured comes straight from the Ackroyd biography.

BOFster · 04/02/2015 21:21

Ooh, I think I can see why the bishops are kicking up a stink about More Shock. It does seem to be pretty close to the facts though.
