Agree, BOF - in the context of recent news stories about the massive exploitation of teenage girls, the traditional depiction of Catherine as a sexually precocious minx leaves a really nasty taste in the mouth.

Philippa Gregory does her as thick as two short planks. It's horrible.
David Starkey is suitably bloody-minded - he argues that she was intelligent and made good decisions as queen and that she was promiscuous but he likes that because he approves of promiscuity.
There's a new biography out by a stripling called Conor Byrne who writes about her as a victim of sexual abuse. He's been criticised by some for being too modern in his approach, but it's good to see that viewpoint taken as far as it can be.
She's quite believable in 'Gilt' by Katherine Longshore, which is a very well-researched YA novel - very good at making her plausible as the age she was and realistic balance of naive/intelligent.

BoF, you would probably really like 'Divorced, beheaded, survived: A feminist reinterpretation of the wives of Henry VIII' by Karen Lindsay. (You can borrow my copy when I've finished the research on my Mary Howard book Smile)

I saw this book The Forgotten Tudor Women recommended on a Wolf Hall FB group yesterday. About Margaret Douglas, Mary Howard and Mary Shelton. It's 99p on Kindle at the moment if anyone is interested.

Just popped up to say thanks for all the interesting insights and commentary on this thread. I appreciate all the book recommendations too. Thank goodness for Kindle and instant literary gratification.

sorry to lower the tone but who else is having lovely dreams about sex with Thomas Cromwell

No, I had a dream about having lunch with Lucy Worsley though, will that do?

Report
drwitch · 10/02/2015 10:03

No not unless your lunch took place in a four poster bed!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 10/02/2015 10:21

No, it was a restaurant. I'm sure in real life she lunches in four poster beds, though.

The BBC is ready to commission The Mirror and the Light according to the Radio Times.

But what I really want to know is will the book be published by August? I really want it for my summer holiday.

Countess I was reading about that Conor Byrne biography the other day. One of the reviews on Amazon was particularly dismissive but I thought it sounded interesting. I'm tempted to buy it but have spent rather a lot on books this month already. It's on my wishlist for now.

I always think that Katherine Howard has had a raw deal at the hands of biographers and novelists.

LadyGlen - Not trying to be a smart arse, but why not order it from your library? I have even ordered pre published stuff from mine & the lovely librarian will tell me if it is on the 'to buy list' & if not a request will be a prod for them. It costs the prince(ss)ly sum of 60p!

The better the borrowing rates are for libraries the more funding they get - at least in my county.

Sorry for the hijack.

Never occurred to me, magimedi but an excellent idea. I will try that, thanks.

Yes! Please all go & use your libraries - or they will cease to exist & then you will all moan.

Katie - I don't know if you were being tongue in cheek & saying that work prevented you going to your library, but most of them have at least one late opening a week & are open on a Saturday. When I lived in Exeter (some years ago) the main library was open on a Sunday as well.

Libraries are a wonderful resource - not unalike Tyndale's bible. It gives so much to so many.

I think I need to start a library thread tomorrow.

And it's Episode Four tomorrow - life holds so much excitement.

I know. I'm counting down the hours. Especially since it was the last episode of Smiley's People tonight. Nothing much else to look forward to. Sad

We're going to need another thread soon. Should we keep it in Telly Addicts or shift to History Club?

Report
UptoapointLordCopper · 11/02/2015 10:24

Is there a history club? Shock

Report
JeanneDeMontbaston · 11/02/2015 10:50

It'd be nice to move to History Club - this thread is busy enough it's popped up in Active Convos so I don't think anyone would lose it. And I always feel a bit sad that the History Club exists, but most of the interesting threads about history start elsewhere, and get lost.

There was a wolf hall thread in history club, but it died of sweating sickness!

Yes, and it might encourage people to poke around the History topic a bit too.

Wolf Hall Wednesday!
Going to library later this afternoon, it's been years.
I am a carer as well as working FT so it's hard to get early eve or weekend time to myself but that's what flexi is for!

Report
magimedi · 11/02/2015 12:58

Katie - don't forget to get a pin number to go with yr library card, then you can reserve books on line from the comfort of your own home. I get an email when my reservations are in & have 2 weeks in which to collect them.

Would be quite happy to move over to the History Club.

Could who ever starts a thread there possibly put a link to it at the end of this one?
