I have an admission to make: via an interview I read and a few random comments on a blog, I have worked out that Mark Rylance lives not far from me. I even know the street. I may have walked past it today... not a stalker

Travelledtheworld · 29/01/2015 17:15

marshmallowpies ooooh. So exciting....
Try walking up and down a greyhound on a lead and see if that lures him out for a chat.

Or carrying a kitten?

Travelledtheworld · 29/01/2015 17:22

countess many candles, hand dipped by myself and my daughters and made from beeswax not the tallow used by the common people.

Shock at Travelled's extravagance. Here at Fitzdotterel Hall we do our internetting by firelight, with perhaps a single smoky rushlight if there are some really funny threads. Rushes get changed once a year on St Scholastica's Day.

squoosh · 29/01/2015 17:41

There was a programme on during the week about causes of death in Tudor times. They mentioned that rushes might stay on floors for up to 25 years (!). They'd have their one little lice and mice civilizations going on by that stage.

Quenelle · 29/01/2015 17:45

Thomas Cromwell IS Kenneth Connor from the Carry On films.

"Phwooaaarr!"

Fiderer · 29/01/2015 18:07

My d (12) came in during the Anne Boleyn/Cromwell scene.

Me: It's AB / H VIII

D with her Horrible Histories education: Yes mum, I know.

Pause.

You'd have been rubbish at all that sewing.

Pantah630 · 29/01/2015 18:16

Very late to this thread but it's made interesting reading. Thanks BOFster for the podcast link, been listening at work in a quiet spell and merlincat I really shouldn't have opened up youtube, had to shut it down quickly in case a customer came in. Am now home Blush

Really enjoying Wolf Hall, I love history but normally more ancient stuff so haven't read the books. I'm itching to buy them now. Have downloaded the audiobook of the first to lull me to sleep but I do like to have hard copy in my hands for daylight hours.

Fiderer · 29/01/2015 18:20

She wasn't harsh, more pitying.

And she did make me a martini in case I felt wounded (snort). We both know martini-making skills are valued more highly in this house than sewing.

Idontseeanysontarans · 29/01/2015 18:28

I'm thoroughly enjoying this but next week is going to have to get a move on if they're only doing 6 episodes and covering BOTB as well.

BOFster · 29/01/2015 18:57

Are they going to cover BUTB as well?

Idontseeanysontarans · 29/01/2015 18:59

According to wiki it's covering both in 6 episodes. Surprising really, it's not exactly racing through the story is it?!?

Quenelle · 29/01/2015 18:59

Yes. I was thinking the same about the current pace.

Idontseeanysontarans · 29/01/2015 19:00

I just hope they don't miss out too much to fit all the important bits in. They'd have been better doing maybe 4 episodes for each book.

magimedi · 29/01/2015 19:48

I reckon they will fit it all in - I am re-reading Wolf Hall as I watch and last night was well up to halfway through the book.

There's a lot of detail/waffle in the books that doesn't need to go into 6 episodes.

But I wish they were doing 60 episodes.

ExitPursuedByABear · 29/01/2015 20:01

Oh me too.

flippinada · 29/01/2015 20:10

Me too! Six episodes is definitely not enough.

What do people think of DL as Henry VIII? I remember Mantel's H8 as a combination of intelligent but spoilt, and somewhat childish.

Idontseeanysontarans · 29/01/2015 22:48

DL doing ok do far. I'm Pleasantly surprised.

magimedi · 29/01/2015 23:18

DL looks too clean & alert for me.

flashystars · 29/01/2015 23:27

Brilliant!

Trills · 30/01/2015 08:44

Poor Henry, had a bad dream.

I liked the looks of incredulity from the boys, who at half his age would never go to daddy about a bad dream.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 30/01/2015 09:02

I think DL is making a good fist of it. His face didn't fit for me before it started but I'm quite convinced

Daft q wrt rushes. Would they be woven into mats or just dumped on floor and flattened like straw in a barn?

flippinada · 30/01/2015 09:19

I'm not sure about DL. Will reserve judgement until I've watched the second episode again.

Can't wait to see him and Claire Foy together, we haven't yet.
