Notebooks at the ready Grin We should have enough information at the end of the first episode to start cooking up some slightly implausible theories.

The mistakes about legal procedure really annoyed me.

The fact that it is the CPS who are charge of the prosecution NOT the victim's family is absolutely basic.

No sign of instructing solicitors on either side and they clearly got the whole exhumation process completely wrong.

I can't see that that the prosecution would have got an exhumation order anyway. Danny was only killed 7 months ago (I think), it was known to be murder at the time so a thorough post mortem would have been done. I think that Danny was strangled wasn't he, so surely there would be no further evidence to be gained at this point?

Another thing that is annoying me is Hardy asking Ellie to stay with Claire in order to protect her from Lee. Hardly fair to Ellie, who has nothing to protect her with and who is encumbered with a toddler. What exactly is Ellie supposed to do if Lee turns up and tries to kill Claire.

Also, if Ellie is there to protect Claire, then why does Hardy whip her away the following morning to be his driver, leaving Claire on her own. Either she's in danger and needs someone there all the time or she's not in danger and Ellie doesn't need to be there.

And another thing. Hardy is essentially doing a DIY witness protection thing with Claire and has emphasised to Claire that she has to stay hidden, not go out in public etc. But Lee knows Hardy, what he looks like and where he lives. With Hardy popping in to see Claire all the time all Lee has to do is follow Hardy to find Claire.

Testing if name change worked

MadameJulienBaptiste · 06/01/2015 12:41

Yay! And now to work on ze leeeemp. I will return later with ze mystery solved, eh Tony?
((( forgets tony is tramping round Russia just now)))

MadameJulienBaptiste · 06/01/2015 12:42

It's flibbertyjibbet btw, thought I could do with a name change after 8 years!

Jossysgiants · 06/01/2015 13:18

I'll be interested to find out why they ruled out the missing 19 year old babysitter as the suspect.

fuzzpig · 06/01/2015 13:26

DH reckons it is something to do with the patios as well. Not convinced personally :o

SnookyPooky · 06/01/2015 13:30

I thought it was great and can overlook certain errors.
Had to keep rewinding it though because my husband kept up a constant fucking monologue of questions. He didn't watch S1.

I wanted to beat him around the head.STFU!

ScrambledSmegs · 06/01/2015 13:40

Bit late to this thread, but OOOH, last night's episode really annoyed me! It was all going well until he plead not guilty, then the fuckups came thick and fast. I was swearing at the screen when the exhumation scene occurred. What a load of bollocks Sad.

I'll watch next week but if the monumentally stupid errors keep coming I may have to rethink it.

I also agree that Claire was really unpleasant to Ellie. The puppy comment showed who she really is, DT is deluded if he thinks she's friend material for Ellie. Also, am wondering if Russell T Davies had something to do with casting - DT, Rory and now Gwen from Torchwood?

Icimoi · 06/01/2015 13:48

It's all very well saying you can overlook errors, but the legal process is clearly going to be central to this series. So, if it's so error-strewn that the whole thing is farcical - which is what has happened so far - it cannot but devalue everything else. Next thing we know, Olivia Colman will emerge from the shower and it will turn out the last series was all a dream.

EauRouge · 06/01/2015 14:03

Nice name change, flibberty Grin

I'm glad everyone has said about the CPS thing, I was really confused about it and DH is Canadian so no help at all.

Do you think maybe Hardy suspects Claire is hiding something so is trying to get Ellie to wheedle it out of her?

IrianofWay · 06/01/2015 14:10

Didn't watch series 1 which I think may be a problem. But not as big a problem as the effing adverts!!! I just remembered why I never watch anything on ITV. Shame really as it seemed quite good...

Jossysgiants · 06/01/2015 14:21

I wondered that too Eaurouge. Maybe he is keeping Claire close because he suspects her rather than wanting to protect her. Although would be pretty crass of him to get poor traumatised Ellie involved in his scheme. ' I just wanted to get you detecting again Ellie cos you're so good at it and all and wasted on traffic duty in Devon' '

Quenelle · 06/01/2015 14:25

Also, am wondering if Russell T Davies had something to do with casting - DT, Rory and now Gwen from Torchwood?

And Adjoa Andoh (Martha's mum) is Ellie's therapist. Olivia Colman was in one episode of DW too.

We were expecting a Dalek to appear any minute.

fancyanotherfez · 06/01/2015 14:26

Was series 1 only a year ago? I seem to have completely forgotten about half the characters- I thought there was something dodgy about the aunt, so don't know why the son is living with them, and that snake journalist nephew.

Who is the woman that the vicar was kissing? ( We spent the whole of series 1 calling him Rory so don't know what his Broadchurch name is!!)

I'm a bit annoyed that they seem now to be pandering to the American audience by completely misrepresenting the English Legal system! US courtroom dramas don't completely change their legal system for us!

EauRouge · 06/01/2015 14:26

Maybe he thinks they can bond over their husbands both being murderers Confused It all just seems a bit weird.

OP posts:
fancyanotherfez · 06/01/2015 14:27

Quenelle Chris Chibnall is one of the Doctor Who writers and wrote Broadchurch

EauRouge · 06/01/2015 14:28

Reverend Rory's friend is the hotelier that was shagging Mark in series 1.

OP posts:
Quenelle · 06/01/2015 14:28

Ah, makes sense now, thanks fancy.

ChuckNovice · 06/01/2015 14:31

I did think it was very strange how Ellie would just stay over at her house with her baby after only just meeting. Also did Ellie have the baby in the last series?

ArabellaStrange · 06/01/2015 14:32

Suspension of disbelief has to be a major part of watching this, I am afraid.
For me, the major moment in series one, when I started adding large pinches of salt to my viewing, was when they discovered five hundred pounds taped to the underside of Dannys bed, in real life, that would have had major impact on the investigation, in Broadchurch, it got mentioned, iirc, once, to Dannys sister when she was being questioned about the wraps of cocaine.
It is enjoyable to watch but has to be viewed as a total work of fiction.

EauRouge · 06/01/2015 14:37

Yes, the baby was in series 1- Joe was a SAHD, I think.

OP posts:
ScrambledSmegs · 06/01/2015 14:38

Ah, so that's why! Thanks fancyanotherfez, a bit of googling has revealed that he was head writer for Torchwood too.

It's like a reunion for them, isn't it?

fancyanotherfez · 06/01/2015 14:43

Yeah it must be like old times! Olivia Coleman was also in Matt Smiths first episode too, the Prisoner Zero one. I was wondering where I had seen the Martha's mum barrister before!

(I still dont know what Rory's Broadchurch name is though!!)

GentlyBenevolent · 06/01/2015 14:50

Scrambledsmegs - I'd imagine the producer writer and director - all of whom worked on Dr who, Torchwood or both, might have had something to do with the casting...

ScrambledSmegs · 06/01/2015 15:08

Fez - I'm going with 'Vicar'. No need for an actual name!

Will probably end up calling him Rory though.
