Just rewatched episode 5, and when Carl Seig is recounting his visit to clean up the house, there is a shot of the outside and there is a bike chained outside on a tree opposite the house. Vincent has been seen riding a bikeon several occasions. Just saying.

iwantginsoakedXmas · 11/12/2014 15:26

Some super sleuths on this thread !! ;)

I didn't pick up on the bicycle.

Indianashopgirl · 11/12/2014 16:03

Broadchurch starts January 5th.
Bit of time to get a life back .... Have Christmas & New Year and then probably back to a life of 'theories'!!

There's even an actress with the surname of Baptiste!!

Flibbertyjibbet · 11/12/2014 16:04

I watched ep 7 again last night. So fed up of Dp asking questions to which he would know the answer if he'd watched from the start...

That I've told him he is not allowed in the room between 9 and 10 next Tues! !

These threads have been great. And I'm not sure I will bother with broadchurch 2 - the first ending was crap, and there are no french men in it.

Even if the missing has a less than amazing ending, I will have enjoyed the series and these threads (and the photos!) Immensely.

Now let's campaign to get Baptiste and ziane over here on all the chat shows.

AuntieStella · 11/12/2014 16:06

I hadn't spotted the bike either!

If Vincent was at the house, then his account will reveal all.

I don't think he can be the abductor though, as you can't move a protesting child on a bicycle and an unconscious one would be too conspicuous.

There can't have been a lot of comings and goings from the house, as it was meant to have been unoccupied so pretty risky. So why would Vincent have been there? the Romanians spoke English, as did the suspects, which rules out need for an interpreter who could be blackmailed into silence.

Surreyblah · 11/12/2014 16:09

MN webchat with Baptiste please!

Marking place

susiedaisy · 11/12/2014 16:57

Did anyone notice the hotelier cough when his wife said to tony that they were always here to help him and Emily. She blamed it on the smoking but it sounded like a cough of disbelief to me.

mewkins · 11/12/2014 17:55

Poor emily has worn a series of hideous outfits though is looking fab in 2014!!! I would say that nah it can't possibly be mark...until tony saying in the last episode that mark is a much better man than he is!! A sure sign that he's a wrong un involved in all kinds of dodgy doings!!

AugustaGloop · 11/12/2014 18:17

I wonder if Tony's missing 9 minutes will turn out to be a bit relevant. Not because it was him but maybe he was on the phone to work or something so more time for Ollie to go missing.

LauraPashley · 11/12/2014 18:35

I have been going round in circles with red herrings, tricks etc, so my new approach is to take everything at face value and see where that leads...
So tony + emily = grieving parents with nothing to hide, mark is a genuine copper who happened to be in the region on hols etc.... It has led me nowhere so far!

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/12/2014 18:42

how did we originally know about the missing 8 mins of tony?

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/12/2014 18:42

AuntieStella · 11/12/2014 18:49

"how did we originally know about the missing 8 mins of tony?"

Mentioned in either ep1 or 2, when Baptiste interviewed him as suspect.

AugustaGloop · 11/12/2014 18:50

I think when the police questioned him about the attack on greg they raised this then.

Indianashopgirl · 11/12/2014 19:18

LauraPashley I've done exactly the same today.

I don't suppose the writers would anticipate how we have been dissecting the story and so maybe the outcome is a little more simple than we would wish.
I've tried to build a story so that it is Alain. Only because of the sobriety coin and the broken TV !
He used Mr Fox to attract Ollie's attention then somehow the Caid de Cite were either disturbed or maybe he & Sylvie owed the C de C in some way. But I don't think I really believe that.
Then I go back to Mark. Is it about mistaken identity? (James/Ollie)
But I can't think that any Father would use their own child as bait so then that rules him out.

Maybe Sylvie runs the Caid de Cite?

I expect there will be an element of shock / surprise about every character. Like a reveal. Tony wasn't holding Ollie's hand. Vincent is Ian's step son. ( I also think he may not live.. The scene with his feet dangling off the edge of the bed concerned me but maybe that's all it was- another clever camera shot to concern the viewer.)
Malik suffered some loss or similar & needs closure. He said that 'for him it's not over'.
I think it will be an accident of some sort involving water.

Actually this thread is just therapy. Off load today's theories and..... Breathe!

mewkins · 11/12/2014 19:19

But realistically he had quite a big area to search and first thought he had just wandered off so had to check all the places they had been. Why the heck would he had spent the last 8 years dedicated to finding his son if it had been him???

mewkins · 11/12/2014 19:21

Indiana yes!!!!! I also found the dangling feet disturbing. I thought that was just me!

AuntieStella · 11/12/2014 19:32

I thought the dangling feet was meant to look boyish - a reflection of his hormone level being reduced to prepubescent. He seemed less troubled, and was taking steps to set things right. Now, with unexpected break from meds, he'll be in a volatile state. I think what he does next will trigger the final denouement.

Do we believe him (and Ian) when they say they were not involved? Even if what they said was true, it doesn't rule out Vincent knowing exactly what happened especially if he witnessed some of it.

Perhaps Ollie wasn't wearing the scarf in the bar because he left it in the changing room. He left the bar to go and get it. Something happened in there. Vincent knows what.

My bet is that it was Sieg. The Caid was doing something else criminal that night, and Mark was involved. The boy at the window was James, briefly roaming the house whilst the deal went down. Sieg planted clues in the basement when he went in to clean up.

The sobriety medal was Sieg's. He has since fallen off the wagon, hence poor and miserable retirement.

WastingMyYoungYears · 11/12/2014 19:50

I thought I was doing really well, but I've missed the whole Caud de cite thing - can someone please fill me in?

WastingMyYoungYears · 11/12/2014 19:51

*Caid.

Apparently Smile.

Indianashopgirl · 11/12/2014 19:55

Stella I do sort of believe Ian when he said he wasn't involved. I think Vincent knows something but I'm unsure what.

AuntieStella · 11/12/2014 20:18

WastingMyYoungYears

Caid de Cite is a Paris based gang, many of whose members are Romanian. Baptiste knew of police operations against them, including running an officer (Antoine?) under cover ka Leon to infiltrate them. Their exact scope (of types of crime, and geographic spread) haven't been described, but it is international and could be either or both of drugs and people trafficking.

At about the time of Ollie's disappearance, the gang suspected they had a mile and fed disinformation to suspected gang member/s. Leo, who had seen some signs of additional agitation in gang members, received this information and passed it on. This led to a raid on a rural warehouse from which the high value 'goods' (presumed Ollie) were to be staged en route to Thailand. Nothing there, except security camera. Leon's cover blown. He called another meeting with Baptiste, and was murdered en route.

Leon's Romanian girlfriend Rini (also an addict) tried to find out from her Caid brother what else Leon might have known, and her throat was slashed (she lived, but only just).

Roll on to 2014: once location of house known, the van of Karl Sieg, a person associated with Caid, was identified there on the morning after the disappearance. Rini helped Baptiste track him down. In return for massive bribe, Sieg admitted he had been called to the house by the Romanians to clean the cellar. He saw blood stains. He did not see Ollie. He said he saw, but did not clean away, the picture on the wall.

EauLittleRougeofBethlehem · 11/12/2014 20:35

I like the theory of Olleh running off to retrieve his lost scarf, that's more believable than someone snatching him from a crowd.

Speaking of Broadchurch- notebooks at the ready, MNPD, the trailer is here. Is that her off Torchwood?

I also love the theory of Ollie running off to get his scarf! That is brilliant and explains so much!
