Yes spotted the P&P reference in fan fiction. It's good!

WHAJEB1 · 29/10/2014 15:59

I would say that it's made me feel younger too, bringing up kids and the mundaneness of life made me get into a bit of a rut and making an effort on myself was always a low priority! I'd also actually forgotten that I had at one point I 'fancied the pants of off my husband' and for some reason I am now a bit more appreciative towards him!! Wonder if molly and Charles will be common names for new babies in about 9 months!

PassTheSherry · 29/10/2014 16:17

I've aways steered clear of fan fiction in case it 'spoils' or changes the dynamic in my mind - but you've all got me quite interested in having a look now!

Thinking of ways OG might have affected me. Well, I have to say things have hotted up in the bedroom dept lately - so that's quite a nice side effect haha.

It is quite inspiring though - I'm looking at retraining for a change of career. I was heading that way anyway, but the Molly storyline (and to some extent her Mum too) - is inspiring me to keep going.

ihearttc · 29/10/2014 16:30

Wow that fan fiction is good!!

Im not entirely sure my change is down to the programme but I applied for a job a few weeks ago (I haven't worked since having my youngest DS) and found out today Ive got an interview for monday.

Feel a little odd as I haven't had an interview for 10 years and its nothing like I did before I had my children. Im sure I will just ramble lots in the interview as well!

Richtea19 · 29/10/2014 16:34

Yes good luck ihearttc for Monday, but don't forget radio1 breakfast show!

IssyStark · 29/10/2014 16:40

Cremeeggs thanks for the reply.

As for acting as a stimulus, watching Our girl has got me back onto Mumsnet after a gap of quite a bit, and that in turn has got me reading the minimalist threads and kickstarting sorting out the house.

When on mat leave with the youngest (who will be 3 in December) I did a p/t masters for fun. I found te time from somewhere to complete it even after I went back to work full-time and I was determined not to lose the time I'd found after I finished. Two years after I completed, the time has, of course, been swallowed back up by family life. If nothing else the message of Our Girl (the course of your life is in your own hands), has given me a kick up the backside to find the time Again. I need to get my dissertation written up as a journal paper and start seriously thiking about applying for a PhD for when youngest is in school as well as getting on with decluttering and decorating where necessary.

furcoatbigknickers · 29/10/2014 17:19

Its made me determined to train for my dream job and work abroad gor a short stint when dcs are grown.

jcscot · 29/10/2014 17:27

"Like Elizabeth Bennet (EB), Molly is from a different class to the hero."

Except she isn't. Elizabeth's father is a country landowning gentleman, just like Darcy, albeit on a different scale and income. The various P&P adaptations always show Darcy owning a far bigger house than he would probably have had. Chatsworth House (used in the Keira Knightley version of P&P) was the principal seat of the Duke of Devonshire whose annual income during the Regency was £100,00 pa from land alone - ten times that of Darcy.

To quote Elizabeth herself:

``In marrying your nephew, I should not consider myself as quitting that sphere. He is a gentleman; I am a gentleman's daughter; so far we are equal.'' (Pride & Prejudice, Chapter 56)

The differences between them were of upbringing and education, not class.

Candypop7 · 29/10/2014 17:29

Ditto! It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man (CJ) in possession of a good fortune (£3m plus house on Royal Crescent, Bath) must be in need of a wife (MD).

orphan · 29/10/2014 17:38

Wow, am so impressed by how it's inspired some of you to make changes for the better! Alas, for me it's only fuelled an obsessive desire to watch clips of CJ and read this thread. And daydream ... I have been thinking though how easy it is for couples who've been together for years (like me) to get so caught up in family life and the humdrum everyday stuff , that you lose sight of the delight of just being with your partner. Anyway off out for dinner with some friends and I'm going to test the waters and see if they've fallen under the Our Girl spell. Will check in later no doubt!

cherin · 29/10/2014 17:55

Fellow UnderFivers, if little Molly or little Charles will be, it's NOT going to be in my house!! We'll just keep it recreational, that side of the business has closed off after 2 little bleeders (fantastic but exhausting)
I am terribly impressed by those who decide to re-train and change career. Where I come from, that would be considered madness but here I think it makes perfect sense. Most of us emerge from parenthood as different people, and (rightly so) need to re-assess what to do with the rest of what is usually still quite a long professional life. Chapeau!

Good luck for the interviews. If anything else fails, think that you need to Kick Ass in Dawes style!

ihearttc · 29/10/2014 18:17

I can't do a Twitter link but have just looked on TG's Twitter page and someone has asked if Our Girl can have a team for Soccer Six!

Im thinking CJ in a football strip...

furcoatbigknickers · 29/10/2014 18:24

If I was having another baby, it would defintley be a molly or charles. That department is shut after 4, just waiting for youngest to start school, hes nearly 2 but nov birthday! So I have a while!! And then Im applying to do midwifery.

BrodiesBabe · 29/10/2014 18:33

ihearttc · 29/10/2014 18:38

Only just managed to check in. Thank you for the clarification on the mess dress. Yes, CJ would look totally gorgeous in this but I still think the army fatigues are the most sexy (on him anyway).

What was the tweet ihearttc? I'm not on twitter, I felt FB was enough but now I'm having a rethink....

jcscot I used the term "social class" rather loosely and inappropriately its true and perhaps a different description would have been better. I am aware of the quote you made regarding EB being a Gentleman's daughter. As you say the differences between them were more to do with wealth and the level of deference afforded to Mr Darcy because of his perceived status in society. However, it was really only intended as a humourous post. I suppose in these days in which the line between social classes has blurred, the same could perhaps be said of Molly and CJ that the main difference between them is their education and upbringing although money would definitely come into it somewhere.

ihearttc · 29/10/2014 18:42

Bellini Tony Grounds tweeted a picture of him holding the OG dvd and said not one person has commented on the likeness between him and Captain James.

So I tweeted a reply to it not realising until I sent it that BA would see it as well.

Its only the second time Ive ever tweeted anything so a complete novice and I really don't get it!

icemist · 29/10/2014 18:48

I think I know which is yours is it the one with CJ? Made me think of here straight away

ihearttc · 29/10/2014 18:59

No that one isn't mine but Im wondering if it belongs to someone else on here...it definitely sounds like one of us!

Mine is the one about playing Captain James's father in the second series.
