nappy et al I definitely think the age of the mothers is a class thing. I live in a mixed private/housing association and I am considered ancient as a mum, having had my first at 37. There are women at my son's school who are only a couple of years older than me dropping off their grandkids, who are often a older than their youngest uncles and aunts. My ex-neighbour is three years younger than me and just become a grandmother and her own mother hasn't yet retired - basically they all started having kids aged around 18-20. If I were casting, I would aim for 20 years between the oldest in each generation for realism.

I loved The Crimson Field as well...thought it was very well written. I didn't realise they weren't doing another series but I wonder if it didn't get as much press or as much of a response as OG.

I used to really like Call the Midwife and I read all the books way before it was turned into a series but I think its gone on too long now-would much rather another couple of series of OG.

I loved the crimson field too, and would happy buy a book, if the screenwriter would decide to make a novel in lieu of the next series! U thought that kitty and dr Thomas were a very nice couple, too ;-)
(Reverse class situation, now that I think about it! Him the working class lad that finds in the army and medicine a way to rise rank, she the upper class lady that uses the army/war as a way to escape from a messy situation at home/divorce! May be there really are just a limited amount of plots in storytelling, and this is a funny permutation of roles! :-)

icemist · 30/10/2014 20:38

Has anyone seen any clips of the Heavenly pilot episode he made? There's quite a few shots online but I haven't seen any clips- although I've not looked very hard

IssyStark · 30/10/2014 20:47

I too was gutted when I found out The Cromson Field was cancelled (as it happens I stumbled across the news a couple of weeks ago when looking for Our Girl stuff. I really hope the writer does a novel to continue the stories.

ihearttc · 30/10/2014 20:50

icemist nope I can't find anything either. I also tried to find a clip of Compulsion that he did with Parminder Nagra and Ray Winstone but can't find that either!

Random observations:

  • having lived a few years in a dodgy-sh estate in london borough of islington, looks like getting the first kid at 16 and the first grandchild at 35/36 is perfectly plausible!! I think both Belinda and mrs smurf look the part, unfortunately
(I mean no judgment. Just thinking about Belinda' s aspirations...)
  • what happened to smirf's dad?? Somebody clearly gave mrs smith a ring and twins...but then in the scene of the ring smurf says to CJ "if I had a father id like him to be like you"...?
  • BA and actors. Admittedly i know nothing of actors. But Ben, if you read this (and I hope you don't- find something better to do! ;-), feel proud of your acting skills because you've clearly proven you can build an entriguing character! The scenes when you look embarrassed and lie badly (ep 4, Molly return- "are you ok?", "yeah, why would I not be") must have been difficult. For a good actor to pretend he's a crap liar...;-)
I personally hope you make the most of this. Either more confidence, more money, access to better parts, larger audiences, more auditions, whatever. Just ride the tide, and enjoy. Because (says the old cougar) life is short, shit happens, and we'd better make the most of what we've got whilst we can :-))
WHAJEB1 · 30/10/2014 20:54

Can I just ask?? In episode 3 when CJ took a jealous fit over dawes and smurf spending time together in Newport, did anybody else think in hindsight that it might have been because he did have 'baggage' and was feeling insecure?? There just wasn't enough to have been insinuated for me to believe that he could be that jealous, but do understand that it could have been due to his position and struggling to not have been involved! Thoughts appreciated x

Richtea19 · 30/10/2014 20:57

Well said Cherin! I wonder if he will be tempted to cross the pond and go the US?

I haven't been able to find heavenly, but you can get complusion on DVD from Amazon. Haven't purchased though.

ihearttc · 30/10/2014 21:03

Ditto cherin!!

Yep I saw it on Amazon but I think he is only in it at the start-he is her boyfriend from uni who Ray Winstone takes her away from so just wanted to see his bit!

Darn, missed the Ditto! Can only put it down to OG withdrawal, no chance to watch today and my father over this eve! Def no chance!

Will have a look on the sky store too as sometimes they have old movies.

icemist · 30/10/2014 21:09

It think it was a combination of her spending time with Smurf and the rest of 2 section commenting as Molly and Smurf were coming back in to the FOB. One commented he left a boy and is now a man- that means they all thought Molly and Smurf had been together- I bet they all knew that Smurf fancied her rotten.

I really felt for Molly after she found out he was married- devastated and no one to talk to about it because no-one knows about it.

His wife left while he was on his 2nd tour- whats that about 18-24 mths before this tour?

WHAJEB1 · 30/10/2014 21:12

Thank you icemist

cherin · 30/10/2014 21:16

Gee, can you believe she left him??
(Ok, he wasn't settled, but still...)
(Stop it, she mutters to herself, cold shower, now!)

WHAJEB1 · 30/10/2014 21:18

Going by her face after ditto - I think she may be regretting it slightly!!!

Rhubarb01 · 30/10/2014 21:26

Just to throw a confusing spanner in the works re why didn't Molly find out CJ was married earlier - how could CJ be certain that Molly didn't already know he was married before the wardrobe/engagement ring reveal scene? After all, Smurf knew and could have told Molly at any time. How could CJ be certain when she returned from R&R that Molly didn't already know. From his point of view it might have made her more interested in Smurf if she had known.

icemist · 30/10/2014 21:33

might have been one of those - oh everyone knows but we don't talk about it. Smurf was reluctant to talk about CJ when they were on r&R - I don't think he wanted to hurt her though. Although he was in denial so maybe hoping that it was him Molly loved despite her protests

icemist · 30/10/2014 21:35

anyone got the link for the interview that BA did that was released after the last episode- where he talks about Molly and CJ being together in the future? Or did I dream it??

cherin · 30/10/2014 21:39

I don't think he ever thought HE could love her. I mean, clearly smurf found her irresistible, but had such a high opinion of CJ that he never thought HE would even think about breaking a rule. During the singing scene, smurf was justing "drinking her in" (that a meaningful sentence, in English?). I think he was oblivious of anything else.

Nah, I just think the plot lines were not very carefully checked! Tony Grounds, next project you know who to employ as free consultants ;-)

icemist · 30/10/2014 21:45

to be fair, they probably never expected it to be discussed so deeply. i am looking forward to the DVD to see if there are any missing scenes ie the kiss- the script says KISS we never saw the kiss just the 'its on its way'...

WHAJEB1 · 30/10/2014 21:48

Could you imagine us females in charge of the plot:

BA/CJ so can you explain what is different in this scene?

Mumsnet - well you've got your army fatigues on in this one when your having a full on kiss.

BA/CJ - but I'm sorry that was the exact same scene the last time but I didn't have any clothes on.

Mumsnet - (slightly embarrassed) em well maybe you have a point and we will just shoot the next scene of you coming out the shower for the extras - that okay and (cough) you can have a towel???

Nickel45 · 30/10/2014 21:49
