A new thread for all things Our Girl as we have already filled up another thread discussing everything to do with the show.

i've done well- managed to get to this time and not watched any episodes. I may have looked at screenshots but it was on tumblr and I couldn't avoid them :)

need to make tea and to avoid the whinging 5yr old I am very tempted to watch my fave scenes in the kitchen

PassTheSherry · 30/10/2014 17:50

Chuckling at "bedroom protocol" here as well. Gives new meaning to standing to attention.

Aww I hope BA isn't freaked out by us, if anyone points him to this thread.

(Ben, if you're reading this, we're harmless, please don't be scared!)

There are some lovely Molly/Smurf exchanges too. I do love some of the expressions on Iwan Rheon's face after Molly has been particularly spiky with him. Poor Smurf lol.

So my TARDIS moment is probably also the Badrai scene, and Molly upon discovering him, turns her back and runs off to notify CP. And doesn't get shot whilst doing so. It just doesn't ring true at all.

I also wonder why they cast such a young actress to play Smurf's Mum. She does a great job (that scene in the car and her telling Molly about how she didn't expect to see Smurf again is really moving. Also loved the end when she asks if she'd made a prize tit out of herself, and Molly says "You made a prize tit out of him!" Hahaha! However, she doesn't look old enough to be his Mum, and in fact there's only 9yrs difference between them.

Brook10 · 30/10/2014 17:54

Agree that BA seems like quite private person and think that like any normal person he would find the response OG has had , not to mention all the comments posted on FB a bit overwhelming/ intimidating.

With the amount of personal information / photos it is possible to find online, I love that this thread has established boundaries on what is posted, and what we feel would violate BA's right to privacy.

Had been torn over whether to go to carol concert and whether that makes me a bit of a stalker,, but after NVM posts on this and previous thread, have got a ticket. Wouldn't dare approach/ speak to him anyway- like Richtea, I will be happy to admire from afar.

Nickel45 · 30/10/2014 17:55

I've done just that icemist, the kids dinner took an amazingly long time to cook tonight, just so I could watch a few scenes! Mind you, I burnt the toast this morning cos I wasn't paying attention to that either. Note to self, must keep the ipad out of the kitchen. Maybe!

Brook10 · 30/10/2014 17:58

If BA is freaked out by this thread, lets hope he hasn't read some of the steamier fanfic!

I love the scenes between Molly and Smurf. It's a shame they killed him off as it would have been interesting to watch their friendship if they were sent on tour together and CJ was at home.
Some of my fave Molly lines are when she's with Smurf.

I just put smurf's mum having them at a young age and I could be wrong but I'm sure in the one-off we were told that Molly's mum was 16-18 when she had Molly- don't quote me on that as I only watched it the once.

Would be a good question to ask - has he seen any of the fan fiction! Am tempted to tweet Tony Grounds and ask has he cos Captains Log by klipdoctor is fab

ihearttc · 30/10/2014 18:20

Unless Tony Grounds is Klipdoctor lol??!

Candypop7 · 30/10/2014 18:20

Mrs Smurf (Siwan Morris) is 38, so if Smurf is 20 say- it's possible if she married young?

Brook10 · 30/10/2014 18:23

Agree Captain's Log is very good- did you notice "discombobulated" in CH 3 spelling test ,and then in TGs post finale tweet - Coincidence ?

Richtea19 · 30/10/2014 18:24

Yes also thought Smurfs mum was too young. When we first saw her I did question who she was, as far too young, and her other son was older than Smurf.

Haven't had anytime today to watch any Episodes, and no chance tonight! But managing to sneak away with ipad for facebook twitter updates!

Yes sorry bedroom protocol probably wasn't the right word, poor DH, would be mortified if he read this! As would BA if he knew we were fantising over him while in the bedroom!

Icemist, yes mention the fanfiction, captains log, but not MyMan!

PassTheSherry · 30/10/2014 18:28

Argh why do I keep writing "CP" when I mean "CJ"?! CJ! J!

Brook10 haha! yes, quite.

Omg if I was an actor I would positively cringe thinking someone was imagining all sorts about me. I know it's always happened, but everything is so much more open and explicit these days with the internet, and that goes for fantasies I guess. It's probably an occupational hazard these days - something they just have to get used to. Wonder if drama schools prepare them for things like that!

For me, the clunkiest line came from Rolex Boy, when Molly asked him how old he was, and he replied "18". The delivery was odd, but just my humble opinion.

Bellini12 · 30/10/2014 18:33

Smurf was 22 (dates on his coffin). Was his brother a twin or an older brother? That's probably stretching it a bit if his mother was 38.

Actors are often cast much younger than their years, not older.

PassTheCremeEggs · 30/10/2014 18:40

Oh I would love it if klipdoctor was Tony Grounds in disguise!

WHAJEB1 · 30/10/2014 18:43

It took them 6 months to announce the follow up to the original 'our girl' I hope it doesn't take as long this time Shock - sorry if this has already been mentioned!

icemist · 30/10/2014 18:54

Smurf and his brother were twins.

I thought that today- 6 months!!! Mind you even if they announced it Monday (link with DVD on sale) we won't know cast for while after.

Rhubarb01 · 30/10/2014 18:55

Smurf was and identical twin although the poor lad said he was always the ugly one!

I expect the decision to make a second series hinges on so many factors such as budget, actor availability, viewing figures, overseas sales (which might be politically awkward in some countries given the subject matter, unlike period dramas), whether there's enough material or scope for a second series. According to BARB the viewing figures for the last episode were slightly lower than for episode 4 at a tad under 5 million. I don't think this includes catch up though which could be significant. You also need to consider that OG was up against the Downton juggernaut. I think someone mentioned way back about The Crimson Field having been cancelled after one series and I did read somewhere that it was axed to allow funding on other dramas such as OG. Their viewing figures exceeded six million but they weren't competing against Downton. I guess it could be a while before any decision is announced.

orphan · 30/10/2014 18:55

Have limited myself to just a very quick skim through of my fave bits whilst ironing today. Only rewound and paused a few times... Anyway, I think my crush is now extending to Molly/Lacey. She is so naturally pretty. I particularly like her in the duet - she just looks gorgeous and so happy. I was struck once more by the brilliant casting. She has such chemistry with BA that their romance is totally believable and as a viewer you feel so invested in their relationship and the need for a happy outcome. Smurf (the actor) is fantastic as well. His expression when he's just witnessed their kiss is chilling and heartbreaking.

BrodiesBabe · 30/10/2014 19:02

Checking in. What a relief to come here after just steering DS through a major Minecraft meltdown. Love the discussions today and the frankness of it.

I would never disclose any thoughts of other men to DH at, err, certain moments ... but I have definitely had thoughts ... quite a few ... Blush

I don't think many British actors set out with the idea of being famous. It's such a hard grind to get into drama school, then go through years of training, then be spat out into the nightmare of the professional world and struggle with bit parts in ads and rep and God knows what else (if you're lucky!) ... the disappointments are endless. They do it for the love of acting. The very, very few who get lucky and are then recognised by the public ... It's a tricky one. Actors in my experience are the most insecure bunch, but at the same time they do seek recognition - it does go with the territory. Performing requires an interaction with an audience and therefore you need audience feedback. Your audience could be a few dozen at the Edinburgh fringe or it could be millions on TV or in cinemas. You need to be prepared for success as an actor and be grateful for it, but that doesn't mean you deserve to have your private life opened up to public scrutiny. It's how you deal with your audience as it grows that is tricky. I think BA's clear distance from twitter etc at the moment (he seemed more active before when he wasn't very well known) is wise and deliberate. I think twitter is a nightmare for anyone in the public eye - best to leave well alone or just post a (very) few funny links or something. It's very rare that anyone active on twitter doesn't do themselves damage in the end. Very few can carry it off. He seems to have this sussed. (Goes up even more in my estimation.)

Deary me, I really waffled on then. Sorry. Clearly had it going round my head!!

PassTheCremeEggs · 30/10/2014 19:03

Passthesherry - I think that delivery was awkward because he wasn't 18 and knew he was being called on it. He was obviously much younger and had lied about his age I think?

icemist · 30/10/2014 19:06

I enjoyed the Crimson Field but it took a while to get going. I didn't know they weren't doing another series. I had thought initially it was just because of the anniversary of WW1

BrodiesBabe · 30/10/2014 19:09

Argh!! Just read above that the Crimson Field had been cancelled. Oh no! Shock I am gutted about that. I adored it. Soldiers, gorgeous officers, feisty women ... and World War One. A sublime combination as far as I'm concerned and I loved it. Totally devastated. Off to sulk for a bit ... Sad

Brook10 · 30/10/2014 19:09

Agree with Rhubarb- I don't think we'll have a decision on a second series for a while as there are so many factors involved - although would think TG would already have come up some ideas on where the next series of OG could go prior to this series even being aired

No idea on this myself, but when the actors sign up for a role, are /can they be tied in to do subsequent series if the show is recommissioned ?

Rhubarb01 · 30/10/2014 19:13

Yes, I liked The Crimson Field when it was on and the writer had hoped there would be four series - one set in each year from 1915 to 1918 taking the characters through to the end of the war and finishing in the centenary year of the ending of the war. Its a shame it was axed. Apparently, she already knew where every character would be on armistice day. I think she ought to write a continuation novel to finish the story.

lyndie · 30/10/2014 19:23

I really hope Lacey goes on to do something better than Eastenders. I think she would great in a crime drama as a detective or something, like Rebus or similar. She's quite private too isn't she? I had a quick look online at her and there's not much stuff about her personal life.
