Tat on Cbeebies; a list

Benaldo · 12/10/2014 08:39

I love a lot of the stuff that pops up on Cbeebies, as does my 2 yr old boy, but there's also a lot of tat, IMHO.

TAT: shoddy animation, feeble and random storylines, too-silly voices, tedious stereotypes, inaccessible characters:
Waybuloo; Peter Rabbit; Octonauts (should be decent, they're trying really hard, but it's just annoying); Tree Fu Tom; Grandpa In My Pocket; Boj (what the hell is going on?); Balamory; Driver Dan's Story Train; Cloud Babies; Raa Raa; ZingZillas; The Ruddy Tweenies

DECENT: flaws more than overcome by intelligent writing, quality animation, characters you can like, proper stories:
Mike The Knight (despite the stupid dragons); Chuggington; Bob The Builder; Postman Pat (despite stupid Pat); Abney & Teal; Rastamouse; Little Robots; Baby Jake

Three shows on Cbeebies are PROPER QUALITY DECENT: Qpootle; Dinopaws; Timmy Time

Abney & Teal nearly makes it into my PQD list, but not quite.

Thanks.

I would like to add Bing to your decent list (but add that he is rather annoying and very much a pfb). Great animation, good characters and decent messages.

I would also like to defend Octonauts. I think the environmental messages are really good and line the characters.

Top of my PQD list, however, has to be Sarah and Duck. Great stories, great animation and the most wonderful collection of first world problems! And where else would you find talking shallots?

Purpleflamingos · 12/10/2014 09:07

Tat - anything that involves Justin.

stillenacht1 · 12/10/2014 09:13

Something Special I credit as a programme that got my severely autistic son to talk. Thank you SS and JustinSmile

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 12/10/2014 11:39

I think Sarah and Duck is brilliant. Like The Mighty Boosh for toddlers. DD adores it too.

NorahBone · 12/10/2014 11:59

Can I also add Tinga Tinga Tales and Little Robots to the top list? I love Octonauts. Baby Bones drops everything to dance to the theme tune. Chuggington gives me the rage. And I hate the way humans on it use their ENTIRE body to talk Confused

TwelveLeggedWalk · 12/10/2014 12:03

Another vote for Sarah and Duck as top of PDQ list, along with Dip Dap.
Abney and Teal is definitely in there for me.

Rastamouse annoys the tits off me, and I always feel like it is based on huge bunch of slightly racially unsound cliches that kids just don't get.

Topsy and Tim has begrudgingly won me over too, goes in the Decent category only for me.

Whatdoesaduckdo · 12/10/2014 12:12

Abney and Teal decent - are we watching the same crap it ittitates the life out if me with it's farting pond dweller and bloody pop pops I want to know who was smoking what when they came up with it ditto bloody rastamouse. I am so glad my 3 yo girls have moved onto citv and bugs bunny Grin

Whatdoesaduckdo · 12/10/2014 12:16

Excuse all the typos I was writing in such a rage Smile

beccajoh · 12/10/2014 12:20

Sarah and Duck has to go on the PDQ list. I'd start a new category of 'Proper Shite'. Me Too belongs in this category.

beccajoh · 12/10/2014 12:21

Small potatoes PQD.

Sirzy · 12/10/2014 12:22

Waybuloo and Octonats are both quality IMO. DS has loved both

On a side note the Octonauts toys are fantastic too

naty1 · 12/10/2014 14:27

ITNG is awful it annoys me so much because it uses fake words.
Talk about dumbing it down.

We watch ch5 more.
Like numtums though

ShadowStar · 12/10/2014 17:01

Sarah and Duck definitely PQD. I'd put Abney and Teal up there too.

I hate Baby Jake though. He's well creepy. And that one where Granny Murray looks after a bunch of random children while their parents sing their way around the city - awful. Just awful. I can't remember what it's called though.

Benaldo · 13/10/2014 09:49

thank god I've never seen Me Too. Hang on.... is that the one where they prance about the garden pretending to be stuff?

Can't add Bing - directly funded by Bill Gates to get Microsoft profile.

Sarah & Duck, yes - should've had that as PQD. If I could go back and edit the post, I would...

Okay, everyone trying to tell me that Octonauts is decent because their kid likes it, just consider that some kids like the Tweenies and eat mud, so...... make a judgement as an adult. It's tripe. The annoying 'major' character with his posh military voice and tache... such rubbish.

Waybalu... don't get me started. Okay I'm started. Appalling. WHY CAN'T THEY SPEAK NORMAL ENGLISH???! Why so sappy floaty weedy feebly pathetic sappy sugary plop?? "Me go floaty up to housey house make happy smiles with Woo Woo!" Just appalling. Shocking. I'd like to punt those ruddy floaty Waybalus - reckno they'd fly for miles. HOpefully into space.

We can't slate In the Night Garden for using baby words - it's for babies.

I also can't hate anything with Justin in it, cos he seems to genuinely give a monkeys... www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/mr-tumble-star-justin-fletcher-1271878

It may be for babies. But if you speak normally babies pick words up. If you speak gibberish, what are they learning?
No reason not to use real words or proper baby language.

ShadowStar · 13/10/2014 14:04

Oh yes, Waybuloos. I'd be happy to never see that again.

HolyDrinker · 13/10/2014 14:08

I think "show me show me" is excellent (and DS agrees). Like an up to date Playschool. The presenters are really engaging.

And I fancy Chris (yes I know he's gay...)

Oh and Andy's Dinosaur Adventure is also fantastic.

HolyDrinker · 13/10/2014 14:10

But I hate "I can cook". Katie is annoying, obvs, but the recipes are so unimaginative. All they ever make is different versions of quiche and ice lollies.

HenriettaTurkey · 13/10/2014 14:12

PDQ: Sarah & Duck, Melody

Nearly great: Abny & Teal, QPootle

Tat: Waybuloo, Mr Bloom (he gives me the creeps!), Let's Play, I can cook.

Do you as an adult enjoy watching EVERYTHING on BBC1?? There is a range of programmes so that you can select what you want to watch, some TV that adults watch is absolute tripe in my opinion like don't tell the bride, I can stand doctor who etc. cbeebies is the same. Choose what you wat your childmtonwatch and ignore the rest. My ds loves octonauts and can go to the aquarium and tell you the names of everything and knows the different sharks etc, more than I know! Why does everything have to be educational and high brow? Kids sometimes want to watch something that's silly and makes them laugh.

StripyBanana · 13/10/2014 14:18

I like the toy spider one and show me show me. Also alphablocks.

I used to limit tv a lot with first but she's also learnt a lot...so I'm a bit freer with the second!
