Tat on Cbeebies; a list

I love a lot of the stuff that pops up on Cbeebies, as does my 2 yr old boy, but there's also a lot of tat, IMHO.

TAT: shoddy animation, feeble and random storylines, too-silly voices, tedious stereotypes, inaccessible characters:
Waybuloo; Peter Rabbit; Octonauts (should be decent, they're trying really hard, but it's just annoying); Tree Fu Tom; Grandpa In My Pocket; Boj (what the hell is going on?); Balamory; Driver Dan's Story Train; Cloud Babies; Raa Raa; ZingZillas; The Ruddy Tweenies

DECENT: flaws more than overcome by intelligent writing, quality animation, characters you can like, proper stories:
Mike The Knight (despite the stupid dragons); Chuggington; Bob The Builder; Postman Pat (despite stupid Pat); Abney & Teal; Rastamouse; Little Robots; Baby Jake

Three shows on Cbeebies are PROPER QUALITY DECENT: Qpootle; Dinopaws; Timmy Time

Abney & Teal nearly makes it into my PQD list, but not quite.

Thanks.

I have an Octonauts obsessed 2yo he also loves Andys wild adventures and Andys dinosaur adventures we don't watch much else these days. The 2 Andy shows I do think are greatly educational and engaging even if he does get a bit silly on some episodes.

He went through a massive postman pat phase it hurt Pat is unbelievably inept glad he's grown out of that!!

whatsagoodusername · 13/10/2014 14:21

I love Bing. I want a Flop. Or I want to be Flop. I love Flop.

I didn't know Bill Gates had anything to do with it. Don't care. He's massively into children's education. I grew up in Microsoft land and he genuinely cares about kids.

GingerPuddin · 13/10/2014 14:23

My DS is obsessed with Andy. He wants andy to come to our house. Whenever I say a friend is coming to play he excitedly asks if it's andy. I have to explain no it's not andy. We don't know andy. It's very unlikely we will ever meet andy. Though I have promised if we ever do meet andy DS can invite him over but only if it's ok with andys mummy.

FishCalledWonder · 13/10/2014 14:30

I was with you until you said RaaRaa was tat! We LOVE Raaraa in this house!

Simple storylines that my DD can follow and talk about, input from S&L therapists, lots of rhyme and repetition and Lorraine Kelly's narration!

Also love Wooly and Tig and Bing.

ouryve · 13/10/2014 14:37

Octonauts is ace! Hmm

Some of the shows you mention are well old - already around when my almost 11yo was a baby, so of course the production values won't seem great. In a lot of cases, the budgets aren't going to be huge for kids' non-branded TV and the BBC isn't going to be able to afford to buy in a lot of expensive stuff. Unless, of course, you're willing to put up with endless Lelli Kelly and Disney Princess ads, or pay more for your TV license.

ouryve · 13/10/2014 14:49

Miaow - Alphablocks is most definitely PDQ. They taught my then pre-verbal 7yo to read, which has been part of the trigger for him starting to speak :o

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 13/10/2014 14:51

Erm Brie no one said it does have to be educational and highbrow. Hence mutual love of Sarah and Duck.
Also there are plenty of threads and occasions where people moan about adult programming. I really think you are taking this too seriously.

I am glad everyone likes Sarah and Duck though.

weebarra · 13/10/2014 14:58

Yy to Sarah and Duck, also Octonauts.
I loathe Waybuloo and Kerwhizz.

JuniperTisane · 13/10/2014 15:04

Fucking Dinopaws. I loathe it. I loathe Gwen and her stupid whiney voice and I hate the big dumb one.

I loathe Waybuloo but DS2 adores it so it can stay I suppose.

Everythings Rosie. Awful.

I like all the real people programmes. Show me Show me, Mr Maker, Something Special, Mr Bloom etc.

Except GIMP of course. There is no excuse for that is there?

Figster · 13/10/2014 15:17

Ginger I met Andy a few weeks ago he's lovely (kind of has to be doesn't he)

HenriettaTurkey · 13/10/2014 15:38

The Alphablocks app is great for my DS (2) who is starting to link the sounds and letters.

Who says TV/ipads are bad for kids! Grin

GingerPuddin · 13/10/2014 16:16

Figster that's good to know. I think DS really just thinks Andy will take him on a dinosaur adventure which is his ultimate fantasy.

MediumOrchid · 13/10/2014 16:28

Octonauts is brilliant - one of the best things on. Dd's knowledge of marine biology is quite impressive for a 2 year old - even if she does insist that octopusses are called octonauts.

Dinopaws - really? Why do they have to use made up words all the time? If you don't like Waybuloo (and I agree with you, though dd likes it) I don't see how you can think Dinopaws is so good!

Other good shows in my opinion: Show me Show me, Something special, Alphablocks, also think Chuggington and Timmy Time are pretty good.

Both Abney and Teal and Sarah and duck are quite odd.

ITNG is also good.

I think Peter Rabbit is probably the worst thing on there.
And Me Too is just baffling.

DeMaz · 14/10/2014 22:28

Oh my god. My DD adores Kate and Min-Min, Miaow! Grin

She also loves Boj, Abney and Teal, Bing, Sarah and Duck and Andys Dinosaur Adventures.

She's 3 1/2 and prefers Ch 5 and Pop TV now.

DeMaz · 14/10/2014 22:29

Me Too is hilarious!!!!

3isthemajicnumber · 14/10/2014 22:36

Haven't read the whole thread but I've an irrational need to tell you all how much I HATE everything's Rosie. It's vile.

SunshineOutdoors · 14/10/2014 22:39

Kate and Mim Mim and Boj should go away.

MorelliOrRanger · 16/10/2014 23:32

I hate baby Jake and grandpa in my pocket.

Love topsy and tim

BuckskinnedAstronaut · 16/10/2014 23:39

YABU (even though this isn't AIBU) for putting Mike The Knight on your "DECENT" list. Mike goes around patronising the hell out of everyone and gets away with it because he's the king's son. Only the knowledge that the Revolution is surely coming and he'll be the first up against the wall goes some way towards restoring my sanguinity.

BuckskinnedAstronaut · 16/10/2014 23:41

The only problem with Sarah and Duck is that if you've listened to Cabin Pressure it's very difficult to hear Roger Allam as anyone other than Douglas. And I can never quite work out why Douglas is narrating gentle stories about a duck, so get all distracted.

HenriettaTurkey · 17/10/2014 08:45

Astronaut...he's also the 'Tory' minister in the Thick of It. Very confusing!

And you're definitely right about MTK. So annoying...

HenriettaTurkey · 17/10/2014 08:46

Btw, has anyone mentioned the horror that is Get Squiggling. They're not squiggle sticks; they're crayons!

PookBob · 17/10/2014 08:53

I knitted a flop for my DC's. Because secretly I love bing too.....
