New thread for the US open.

Am hoping to get round to seeing some of it, but in the meantime, I am limbering up my refresh finger. Grin

Yes, I've just heard it. Should be a really good match.

The doubles have been really good this year, better than most of the singles matches.

Raahh · 16/11/2014 17:39

Ok- I've just seen it!!

Bloody hell!

Just seen it on FB. Wasn't expecting that.

AnyoneForTardis · 16/11/2014 17:46

well, kudos to feds for coming on court in person to say the news and not leaving to someone else.

and kudos too for Murray to come on at short notice and give the crowds a match, same with Djoko, mac, cash and Tim.

JuanPotatoTwo · 16/11/2014 18:03

Be disappointing for anyone who has tickets for the final but I think it's the right thing for him to do. It's been a strange wtf overall I think - lots of short one sided singles matches, Milos pulling out, Ferrer jumping in and now this.

OneInAMillionYou and Mama I'm glad you enjoyed. I didn't go in the end - have spent quite a lot of money on tennis this year, and would like to watch some next year so decided against. Good to hear your reports. Million did you have good seats?

JuanPotatoTwo · 16/11/2014 18:09

Tardis Djok did his sarcastic clapping to the crowd when they cheered a double fault. It was poor form from the crowd but I think they were just keen to see a better/longer match. And it was poor form from Djok but he does get touchy when he feels the crowd are against him.

AnyoneForTardis · 16/11/2014 18:39

all the fame, number one in the world, GS and tour titles, a wife and child, millions in the bank and the poor guy just wants the crowd to love him.

why doesn't he get the level of love that fed and nadal get? hes as good, if not better a player, he loves joking around...

no wonder he got miffed at the double fault thing, he took it personally and its horrible when crowd applause/cheer a dub fault.

AnyoneForTardis · 16/11/2014 18:50

Mind you, unforch Djokos smile always looks false!

my fave umpire (apart from James keovavaovaovathong!!) isd in the chair, mohammed of the Isner/Mahut match!

Dc and I decided to call Bennetaua/Roger-Vasselin' Benelyn and Vaseline! 'they both sound chemist, their names!

JuanPotatoTwo · 16/11/2014 19:27

Benelyn and Vaseline :)

I don't know why Djok doesn't get the same level of crowd love as Fed and Nadal, possibly because he's seen as the "newcomer" to those two. Personally, he's my fave out of the top four, he seems intelligent and articulate. I get that some of his victory celebrations are over the top, but I can forgive him for that - the others fist pump and shout etc, and the adrenaline levels must be insane.

I suppose the very fact he's not as loved as the others makes him sensitive to crowd support or lack of. And I guess you can still lack self assurance even if to the world you appear supremely confident and seem to have it all.

I like Muhammed as well. I think my fave is Carlos Bernardos though. Like Cedric also but I gather he made a bad call yesterday?

JuanPotatoTwo · 16/11/2014 19:32

Mac looks old. Tim doesn't look a day older.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/11/2014 19:34

You might be right about him being the newcomer, trying to break into the great Fed/Rafa rivalry. Perhaps he's always seen as a bit of an outsider.

I don't dislike him, but I've never really warmed to him either, and I don't know why. Possibly because most of the time I've seen him play the crowd are supporting the opposition and he doesn't really handle that well.

JuanPotatoTwo · 16/11/2014 19:42

Hey Clay, how are you? :)

Re Djok, I also think his family do him no favours -his dad has made some pretty unguarded remarks in the past. That's obviously not his fault but doesn't help with public perception. Another point in his favour as far as I'm concerned is that Pot likes him. And as we all know, Pot is god and can't possibly be wrong :)

JuanPotatoTwo · 16/11/2014 19:47

This is nice :) And Tim and John are holding their own.

JuanPotatoTwo · 16/11/2014 19:58

Ha! They have Cash, Mac and Tim all v Andy now! And two balls in play :)

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/11/2014 20:09

OMG, I've just realised the WTF are on iplayer. How has it taken this long to figure that out. Might need to catch up.

Even better, it's on the BBC Sport site live.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/11/2014 20:10

Tennis I can see Tennis Tennis

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/11/2014 20:19

The ball girl can play.

JuanPotatoTwo · 16/11/2014 20:21

Clay, have fun catching up :)

Cash is like a naughty little boy, he's a real "potcher" - if any of you are Welsh you'll know what I mean by that!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/11/2014 20:24

Aww Mac's nearly in tears.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/11/2014 20:25

Can't believe that court is so empty. Who wouldn't have stayed for that match?

JuanPotatoTwo · 16/11/2014 20:28

Oh sad. That's it for 2014 then. Hate this point, makes me feel as if the year is over. Well it is as far as tennis goes. Has it been a good season do we think?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/11/2014 20:40

It's OK, Juan, we managed to get through this bit last year. It'll be fine.

Missed big chunks of this season, but I think it has been a great season. Roger and Rafa both coming back to playing some amazing tennis after looking like they were at the end of an era last year. Lots of quite exciting new players coming through, particularly at Wimbledon this year.
Only bad bit was Pot being out for so long.

JuanPotatoTwo · 16/11/2014 20:59

Have you been having an exciting life Clay or has it just been one of those years when your interest waned?

I know it's not very long really, and the poor buggers deserve some time off. It must be hard travelling for 11 months of the year. For the successful players, there is some monetary compensation, but for lots of them it must be a grind.

It's been an ok season. Nice to have two new gs winners but neither of them have followed through really (although I should give Cilic a chance as his win was relatively recent). Thought Grigor might have done better also but since Queens nothing much for him. Dom doing well though, and Fed and Rafa certainly going strong (well, Fed was til yesterday).

Will look forward to seeing how Zverev, Coric and Kyrgios do next year. Also, what was the name of the young lad who did really well at the French? Locoli or something? And a young Argentine at Wimbledon whose name I've also forgotten. And, of course, with luck, Pot will be back in January. So lots to look forward to :)

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/11/2014 21:05

Interest waned a bit, and it's worse when you can't see it and can only watch the scores. Not helped by the BBC losing some of their non-Wimbledon coverage to ITV who didn't put it online [grr]

Am going to try and be better next year. Agree that some of the newer players dropped off a bit and didn't do much.Hopefully they will pick up again in 2015.
