Child Genius (C4)

Anyone planning to watch this?

I was a little like these children; joined Mensa as a child, but used my ability to coast through school/university rather than to achieve anything noteworthy.

DS2 is also of this ilk. We are not doing any of the things these parents are doing, although when opportunities arise through school then obviously we let him participate.

This is all very sad. The parents are not thinking about the end game. These kids will grow up to be adults and if they cannot function in society, they will get nowhere far. Being a brain box is not the only (or even most important) recipe for having a successful and happy life.

The green juice mother is weird. These people are psychologist and you would have expected them to be more aware of the impact of their behaviour on this young girl.

WhispersOfWickedness · 20/07/2014 21:24

Yes, Zebra Smile

TheSpottedZebra · 20/07/2014 21:25

oh, ok it might be a diary. I was thinking it was notes like in a psychologist consultation.

OOh, and now with the woo.

Sparklingbrook · 20/07/2014 21:25

What the hell is this treatment now? What a load of old crap.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 20/07/2014 21:25

upyourninja · 20/07/2014 21:25

TheBogQueen · 20/07/2014 21:25

I'm sorry but these parents cannot be fur real

Elderflowergranita · 20/07/2014 21:25

Aliya!s parents are a bit woo, aren't they?

Sparklingbrook · 20/07/2014 21:25

Hahahahahahahaha. This is like a sketch show now.

MissWimpyDimple · 20/07/2014 21:26

Merlincat I know the school.

Wow-I'm seriously concerned for Aliyah. This really isn't comfortable viewing.

HumphreyCobbler · 20/07/2014 21:26

"And don't most child geniuses end up as either social recluses or hating their parents?"

Only the child geniuses with parents who parade them on the telly I reckon.

TheSpottedZebra · 20/07/2014 21:26

Psychologist can mean anything though, can't it?
Like maybe they did a course in impact of cabbages and ugg boots in plastic on behaviour.

newnametoday1 · 20/07/2014 21:26

"Am already regretting my Haribo-and-fucking-huge-TV parenting method"

Classic.

Sparklingbrook · 20/07/2014 21:27

Webchat with Aliyah's parents on MN asap I think.

upyourninja · 20/07/2014 21:27

I think it's fabulous that the truly exceptional children have support and encouragement from loving (if baffled) families. It's a rather different issue to push and push and push a bright child to show these skills.

WhispersOfWickedness · 20/07/2014 21:27

Bless her, feeling a bit sorry for her now, they keep talking about how brainy the mum is, as if she is not bright at all Confused

TheFirstOfHerName · 20/07/2014 21:27

I wouldn't say my parents pushed me, and I was certainly not subjected to a rigorous (or any) training regime.

I did start school a year early, so was in the year above my same-age peers in a selective independent school.

I was allowed to read anything from my parents' bookshelves, from 'Gödel, Escher, Bach' to 'The Hite Report' Shock

alwaysonmymind · 20/07/2014 21:28

"I feel unappreciated"

So do I most days! I must have a gifted child then Smile

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 20/07/2014 21:28

Are they not her parents? Why doesn't she call them mum and dad?

TheSpottedZebra · 20/07/2014 21:28

Goodness me, Aliyah's mother had a very awful upbringing www.jewishtelegraph.com/prof_196.html

Smartiepants79 · 20/07/2014 21:28

I'm feeling sorry for Aliyah. If she is a 'genius' then she shouldn't need all this coaching.
It doesn't all come naturally for her.
She is very bright but....
I fear burn out at some point.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 20/07/2014 21:28

Aaliyah has truly terrifying parents.
