Child Genius (C4)

Anyone planning to watch this?

I was a little like these children; joined Mensa as a child, but used my ability to coast through school/university rather than to achieve anything noteworthy.

DS2 is also of this ilk. We are not doing any of the things these parents are doing, although when opportunities arise through school then obviously we let him participate.

Hooray!!!

Did anyone notice the slip in editing earlier in the series where they showed Sharon with a plaque thing when her parents were being interviewed? I thought she was the winner from that point!

IScreamForIceCream · 10/08/2014 21:59

Poor Tudor - he doesn't have the skills to smile or clap for her.

Mondaybaby · 10/08/2014 21:59

Well done, Sharon. Well deserved.
Poor Tudor, he needs a massive hug and to go out and have lots of fun.

LondonBus · 10/08/2014 21:59

Well done Sharon. She is genuinely very, very able.Smile

Poor Tudor.

handcream · 10/08/2014 21:59

If they are like this in front of the camera what are they like in private....that father is really scary.

IScreamForIceCream · 10/08/2014 22:00

Hooorrrraayyyyyyy! His dad did some nice.

LondonBus · 10/08/2014 22:00

Ah, it all seemed to be part of getting a scholarship to Harrow.

thegreylady · 10/08/2014 22:01

Excellent result all round and Tudor's parents weren't too bad at all.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/08/2014 22:01

Yay Sharon!! But Tudor was incredibly mature for an 8 year old in defeat.

LondonBus · 10/08/2014 22:02

Yes, Todors parents finally relaxed. Smile I think they just out too much pressure on everyone, including themselves.

honeybeeridiculous · 10/08/2014 22:03

Brought a tear to my eye!
DS (16) watched it with me, he's decided he's glad he's not Mensa material thick

SauvignonBlanche · 10/08/2014 22:04

I missed the last few minutes as the nurse was doing my Obs. Glad to hear Tudor's parents didn't give him any grief.

handcream · 10/08/2014 22:04

My god that poor scrap is just 8 yrs old... I am on another boarding v day thread, if this is what staying at home does - well boarding wins every time!!!

TomatoSorbetWoman · 10/08/2014 22:05

Why were Tudors parents so formally dressed?

handcream · 10/08/2014 22:07

How interesting, Tudor and his scary Dad are looking at Harrow. Sorry, the damage has already been done and that's five yrs in the future.

He will really struggle there.

TheAmazingZebraOnWheels · 10/08/2014 22:16

Did anyone else notice that Aaliyah and her parents were in the audience? I dread to think what they were saying to her during this/after.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 10/08/2014 22:16

Was this the winner's award? It was shown in the second episode.

She was wearing a different headband/outfit in the final, I think.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 10/08/2014 22:21

I thought it was the outfit she was wearing this evening but then I have a brain like a sieve! It was different to the clothes she was wearing in the 2nd episode which made me wonder.

RainbowB7 · 10/08/2014 22:22

That's not the winning trophy. It was prob one of her chess awards or something? The actual genius prize was a huge cup.

Mondaybaby · 10/08/2014 22:24

I loved Eleanors, "There, there" when she was comforting Rubayat.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/08/2014 22:37

I think it was one of her chess awards but she probably did get a certificate as I'd have thought the cup would have had to be passed on in a years time?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 10/08/2014 22:41

I'm just watching it now on catch-up and getting fed up with the voiceover calling Rubiyat's questions on Superstring theory 'postgraduate'.

Yes, they are odd things for an 11 year old to know, but they are only memorization. They're not actually hard at all. I don't mean that to have a go at him at all - he seems such a nice lad and his dad is obviously trying hard to do the best they can - but it seems cruel to make out he's doing something far more advanced than he is.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 10/08/2014 22:45

Handcream: why do you think Tudor will struggle at Harrow?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/08/2014 22:49

LRD, you are correct, unless he can do the maths behind it, he doesnt understand string theory (which many theoretical physicists disagree with), he just accepts the descriptive wording. However, it is brilliant that he is interested in it.
