I thought it was brilliant, although some generational shifts confused me. The lead character played by Sarah Lancashire had a grandson but didn't look old enough.

The company boss had been friends with the accountant's father, that didn't add up did it? Or did I get that wrong.

Great to see the George Costigan and Siobhan Finneran reunited although not onscreen together.

Brilliant writing and simply superb acting I thought, anybody else enjoy it?

nespressofan · 03/06/2014 21:59

That was fab! Best drama in ages!

ZebraZeebra · 03/06/2014 22:00

Lurker piping up! I still don't get the animosity towards Ryan - why all the anger towards the mother for taking in her grandson? I don't get it. I don't think it was actually explained..?

ExitPursuedByABear · 03/06/2014 22:00

Yeah

Southeastdweller · 03/06/2014 22:00

All wrapped up too neatly for me.

nespressofan · 03/06/2014 22:01

Yes sorry a lurker! Maybe she 'neglected' her kids whilst climbing the career ladder? Dunno!

Dolallytats · 03/06/2014 22:01

Bloody iplayer....it keeps freezing. I'm going to have to watch tomorrowAngry

Tis not fair.

Southeastdweller · 03/06/2014 22:05

I think the son resented his nephew because Ryan indirectly broke up his parents marriage and also because Ryan was a reminder of Tommy and his sisters suicide.

MrsDavidBowie · 03/06/2014 22:05

Our bloody iPad stoppeg when Ryan and Tommy were on boat..what happened?

tilliebob · 03/06/2014 22:08

Check the plug at the end "You can preorder Happy Valley series 1..." Series 2 looming, then?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 03/06/2014 22:16

Well!

It was always going to be a squib of an ending, can't see a second series out of this.

GypsyFloss · 03/06/2014 22:27

I loved the moment when Ryan told off his Dad for being rude to his little mate and how a Ryan tried to be like a dad , having not had a decent role model but when it came to it his psychopath nature came through.

I think it tied up the loose ends of this story but it certainly left it open for season two to be about the drug trade and corruption of those in office.

It was the best wake up and be excited about it tv I've seen in a long time.

Very disappointed at the ending. I had high hopes for a twist. The drug dealing counselor, a different father of Ryan, a nugget of information from Catherine's sister?. Great series, rubbish ending.

WaitMonkey · 03/06/2014 23:18

Anyone know what Ashley's wife has been in ? It's driving me mad. Some sort of comedy role ?

angelos02 · 03/06/2014 23:22

She was a hairdresser in Corrie. That is being written by 6th formers at the moment too. All our good writers have defected to Scandinavia

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2014 23:30

Bloody hell. She gave him a good kicking didn't she.

I still have no idea really why she fell out with her son. Or how she can say she's proud of a son who would judge an innocent baby because of his parentage. Surely any family would embrace the child and just get used to having him, not cutting each other out.

I've met plenty of shit characters in my life but I don't think I've ever heard anybody hating a small child because of the circumstances of their birth. It seemed at odds with the warmth and forgiveness thriving in other relationships in the same family.

I also thought that TLR became less menacing, not more so, as his cheekbones and middle class vocal tones gave him away as an actor and not a real psychopath.

Little Ryan was utterly believable though. And Ferdy from This Life as the police chief! I love it!

Deserves to win every award going, not least for giving me by far my longest thread ever on here :)

Ryan was brill wasnt he, such a cutey, and how he was reading that book with the innocent dad who went to prison, the Railway Children.

and how we felt sympathy for Tommy because of his shit upbringing!

and how the son felt anger, same as his dad did, at mum taking on Ryan.

she got her stripes back didnt she!
brilliant sarah lancashire.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 04/06/2014 06:55

Morning!

After a nights sleep I reckon they could do a second series with Ann becoming a copper and Cath chasing up the local drug kingpin who topped Ashley.

Plus TLR's trial to keep him in the show, albeit a smaller role.

slartybartfast · 04/06/2014 06:57

oh and am pleased that Kevin, win prison, did not show remorse, and still blamed nevvison for not paying for his daughter's private schooling.

hate it when script writers make a happy ever after, and many script writers would no doubt have shown him askign for forgiveness.

and her son, btw, was also angry as she had told him she wished he had died instead of becky Sad, apparently said in grief.

Helpys · 04/06/2014 07:09

Gosh! that was wonderful. Series 2 will have Anne as a copper and tying up the drugs/ councillor story.

Sarah Lancaster was incredibly good.

ZebraZeebra · 04/06/2014 07:16

I can almost understand the animosity to SL - though I'm still bemused that it would break up a marriage to start caring for your grandchild. This is your daughter's child - I can't imagine anyone not actively wanting that child! But at a stretch, I can see the son's anger towards his mother for what she said, and because taking Ryan in broke up his parent's marriage. But for the son to call Ryan - his nephew - "that" and "it" and a little twat, it was just awful :( I really liked Ryan - it was like although he was naughty, he has a spirit to him, a defiant little spirit and not in a negative way.
