Btw, thanks Anne for the Austen info. I will try 10 minutes of the first episode.

Hoping to catch up on last 2 episodes asap but have to visit another Academy tonight. DD will not be impressed if we are not back in time for GBBO.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 01/10/2013 14:59

Gosh you are a hard nut to crack, MsN! Grin But I'll take 10 minutes if that's the best I can get!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 01/10/2013 15:00

I bought DH Season 1 of Breaking Bad when it first came out (we are both chemists so it caught my eye). We have watched about 3 episodes so far. We are rubbish at keeping up with long running series. I'm sure we'd like it. I only ever seem to have time for soaps, Strictly, GBBO etc and Downton.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 01/10/2013 15:01

We record GBBO because DS is at Cubs tonight, usually watch it on Friday as we have a quieter night activities-wise and not so worried about bedtime for the DCs.

Raahh · 01/10/2013 17:33

Who- stick with Breaking Bad- it really is worth it. The first few episodes I was determined to hate itGrin , but once I got hooked, that was it.

And it was the last 'IT Crowd' tooSad which was very, very funny.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 01/10/2013 18:41

Oh I have the last IT Crowd recorded. Looking forward to seeing it but sad that it is all finished.

My Christmas cake is in the oven, so I am hoping it turns out ok, as the cost of the ingredients is Shock. Hopefully I'll have some lovely cake smells wafting around during GBBO.

Raahh · 01/10/2013 21:10

I cannot bake- I used to bake when I was a kid (though I am wondering if my gran just ate it to be politeGrin). I can't seem to bake anything now- I blame the oven. It's fan assisted and rubbish and needs a really good clean.

I feel I am letting my dcs down by only ever making 'just ad eggs' fairy cakesGrin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 01/10/2013 21:24

Raahh - my mum spent 25 years thinking she couldn't bake because of her fan oven, then one day decided to try the non-fan top oven, lo and behold baking that works. I love baking, do it several times a week, but nothing fancy, scones, pizza base, fairy cakes etc. The DCs won't eat anything fancy.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 01/10/2013 21:26

I will be sobbing from now until Christmas if this doesn't work. I have over-invested emotionally in it!

It has been in three hours now. It is meant to be in for 5, but that is a recipe for an old-fashioned oven. I have lowered the temperature massively, put loads of newspaper round it, and will be checking it regularly from about 3 and half hours onwards. It does smell nice. Which probably has a lot to do with the enormous amount of brandy in it.

Raahh · 01/10/2013 21:31

Good luck Anne! Cake

my gran always makes the Christmas cakes-I am not keen, but my MIL used to love it. None of us eat them nowSad.

But my mum makes gorgeous mince pies- they have a viennese whirl biscuit topping instead of pastry and just melt in the mouth. They are great.

but not as good as the year i made the mince pies with my dad, andwe put icing and glace cherries on them

Grin
Raahh · 01/10/2013 21:32

Who- I think the old gas cooker we had was definitely the key to may baking success.

I can't even get the timing for a flipping roast dinner right in my crappy fan assisted health hazard ovenGrin

ClayDavis · 01/10/2013 21:48

I've never tried baking in my stupid oven. It managed biscuits OK but that's about as much as I would trust it with. Timings on anything else are a bit hit and miss. Often more miss than hit. Grin

curlyclaz13 · 01/10/2013 22:30

I wish I had time to bake now. in 16 weeks I have made brownies twice and flapjacks once.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 01/10/2013 22:45

Well, the cake is out of the oven! It looks and smells wonderful. I'm 95% certain it is ok. It springs back when I press it and the skewer is coming out clean. I wish my Granny was still around to ask for her opinion!

It was in for 4 hours, 2 hours at 140 C and 2 hours at 130 C, but as it is a huge cake (11" square) I am a little wobbly that it won't be cooked properly. Everything is telling me it is cooked, but I can't help but panic that it isn't. But if I leave it any longer it will no longer be beautifully brown, but burnt.

It will stay hot for ages anyway, so I suppose it will keep cooking inside for a little while (despite my million skewer holes checking to see if it is done!).

My old fan oven was a nightmare, but this one seems ok, despite being a fan oven too.

I'm having a glass of wine to calm my nerves and to celebrate actually cooking it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 01/10/2013 22:45

My oven is gas, I have to use a shelf thermometer rather than the dial for cakes, but years of experience mean I can set it Ok for biscuits, scones etc now, it was a long learning process. However you can't get two trays or two cakes on different shelves done the same, there is a big temperature gradient as you go down the shelves. I struggle with Christmas cakes for this reason, the top gets much hotter than the bottom. I didn't do one last year but fancy giving it a go again now. I made mincemeat for the first time last year and it was fabulous. .

Can you imagine the Great Doctors Bake-Off?

Gobby would make a cake out of a packet mix.
Heston would make a grand Christmas cake out of the finest ingredients.
TBFE would make a table full of cakes then eat them and vomit

AnneEyhtMeyer · 01/10/2013 23:15

Oh go on, Who, give it a go! I made mincemeat for the first time last year. Still have a couple of jars left, so I am looking forward to using them this year now they are nicely matured.

Doctors actually did a Letherbridge version of Masterchef. Gobbyplod & Gobby v Heston and Mrs T. It did not end well.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 01/10/2013 23:15

I can't believe we are nearly at 400 messages on this thread in less than a week! Shock

MsNobodyAgain · 02/10/2013 11:55

Just caught up. What the frifferty jibbers have the scriptwriters done to Howard? One minute they had him as a virtual clown of a character, now he's morphed into Aggie MacKenzie with bulimia. Confused

Some good acting in Mondays episode though. Quite enjoyed that.

OP posts:
Raahh · 02/10/2013 12:58

I'd forgotten Letherbridge masterchef- Gobbyplod turned out to be a gourmet chef, and Mrs T looked fantastic in national dress.

The Howard thing makes no sense. But never fear- he will be cured in a week, and they will never speak of it again Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 02/10/2013 13:39

Grin Raahh at TBFE comment!

Cake sounds good AnneEyhtMeyer, Ben if its not quite cooked its nice to has a bit of stodge in the middle imo :)

I will join you all today but staying away from people in rl, I've unintentionally upset 3 people in a week and I'm feeling really :( about it and wish I could hide. Sometimes too many balls lead to me not thinking I think and I really hate upsetting people. One was me being insensitive but also trusting someone I shouldn't have and the other two were genuine misunderstandings but perhaps I'm not so good with people after all :(

OodAlpha · 02/10/2013 13:46

Ok I missed yesterday's ( do I need to catch up?) but watching today's regardless

I have a load of crap TV stacked up and dh isn't working evenings for ages.
