I thought I ought to start a thread for people wanting to discuss the content of the website, but who are still watching at C4 pace. I'm plodding my way through with google translate, so french speakers please bear with!

I'm nearly done translating Julie's dr's letter, just trying to figure out a bit google can't seem to translate properly. Will post it when done.

I'm guessing that Serge is not in control of himself when he kills, but is possessed or something. Maybe his diary is full of him trying to figure out why he's got someone's intestines stuck in his teeth when he wakes up in the morning?

I'll have a look I can't seem to find anywhere- the navigation is driving me crazy.

The newspaper report was from 1977. That's - oh - 35 years ago. When Victor was killed. So if Pierre was involved in the cult, was the cult a cover for a bunch of murderous thieves? Or were they killing people to "save" them? I get the impression he found god afterwards.

Serge's diary made me feel ill but will try and knock up a simplified translation later if no-one else has done so by then.

Bore - I did wonder about Serge and Toni but surely they are too young to have been those children in 1977? It would make them late 30's/early 40's now. But Victor and his pal - mmm - another matter. Could very easily have been them - what if the murders were actually to punish this family for not taking the loss of the old village seriously enough... being dead would stop those kids mucking around in the mud, allright..

anon I found the lack of a Mayor really weird, too. I wondered if M Costa still was the Mayor of the new village, or whether the village felt they had been so let down by him last time that they decided they didn't want one this time around?! But then that does not fit with normal French political life. Which begs the question - is any of it real?

Oh - and the thing about nobody praying really stood out to me in the newspaper report, too. Were the unfaithful saved while the faithful in the church died? That gets you into very sinister territory.

And the rock foundations not being as strong as was thought - metaphor, perchance? Everyone's lives and minds and relationships are not as strong as they would like to think, once they are shaken by death.

Also the line about the butterfly. Yes we have the link with the butterfly in M Costa's house, but it says that the butterfly is a sign that life will prevail. Maybe the butterfly breaking free at the start of ep 1 is a sign to us that says that life will prevail in the village, but only after dreadful calamity? Or that life will prevail after death? Again a bit more sinister there...

Madame Costa died in 1978, according to her bio, so she wasn't killed in the dam incident in 1977 (unless it was delayed consequences). I wonder what killed her?

I have been reading Serge's diary (!). His mother mocked him for being sexually aroused by a TV programme, and presumably this made him flip and go on to kill her?

And . . . things that go into the lake and should drown, don't. Like the goat he threw in? Or you have to drink the water? But surely the whole town has drunk it?

So that's why he tries to disembowel people and animals: to make sure they're really dead. Is this why he came back for Lucy? No wonder Julie was scared. I am sure she is a rev. too from reading that report into her death.

I reckon he killed her.
