As it says really - the old thread is nearly full, so here's a continuation for those of us watching on C4 on Sundays. Please, no spoilers - not even vague ones!

If you've watched the whole if season one already, there's a naughty corner another thread over there -->

Twice.

NoHank · 02/07/2013 18:33

You have probably all already noticed this but it only just occurred to me on Sunday that on the opening title scene, the one with the dam and the mirror image reflected above it, it is the top image where the ripples on the water occur, not the bottom. Which got me speculating wildly about stuff.

So I was thinking what if the returned were actually the alive ones and all the village people (snurk) were dead. The returned somehow survived their deaths...or something.

Then I was thinking maybe they had all been grave robbed and suspended in the dam water which has some sort of rejuvination properties... or somehting

clutches huge bundles of straws to chest and clings on madly

WiseChildren · 02/07/2013 20:22

Hi, been lurking and loving this thread as much as the programme Smile

I have some theories of my own to add:

  1. Lucy was already a returnee. This is the only explanation for her surviving the attack, and hesitating to fight Serge when she had the chance to escape. Also has no family or close friends that we have seen.
  1. Lucy (pross psychic) connects the living and dead because she is one of them, and, at the moment of orgasm you are closest to death (err French idea?). The French for orgasm is 'le petit mort' = little death.
  1. The repeated trope of horror genre: Exorcist poster in Julie's flat, Julie is watching a horror film when Victor appears, Victor and brother/ friend tell ghost stories on night of his shooting.
  1. The double or mirroring: submerged old town/ new town, twins, photos/ reality, relections in mirrors/ windows/ puddles/ the dam. What does this mean though??? What is reality? Are they all dead?

The more I watch the more questions I have!

VenusStarr · 02/07/2013 23:01

I have managed to rewatch episode 1 and not sure I'm any clearer, but things I have noticed so far (not had chance to read more than page one yet, so apologies if I'm repeating what someone has already said)

  • Simon - why was he so aggressive with Adele when he went to the house? Also, why did he go to his own grave? What made him suspect that he was dead?

  • I tried really hard to see the reflection in the patio doors of Camille's family but couldn't quite make it out

  • in Julie's episode I'm sure that her mole is on her left cheek but in real life it's on the right, which leads me to think reflections are important in some way? But I haven't re watched Julie's episode yet

  • poor victor in episode 4. I always suspected Pierre / helping hands guy of being creepy and weird.

  • funny how they came to the conclusion that Miss Paget (neighbour, think that's her name) killed herself, but victor looked a bit knowing so think there's more to that

  • well done to whoever thought on the last thread about Lucy being a sexual medium :) !!

Just seen an advert for next week, they start to dig up the graves I think!

I am going to rewatch 2 and 3 to see what else I've missed and still cannot explain :)

LauraPashley · 03/07/2013 00:15

So glad to find this thread, I was scared of the spoilers in the last one!

When the 2 men were looking out at the control room thingy at the dam, talking about the power station potentially flooding, they said something about it happening before? Or something about "what happened last time" - do we know what they are referring to?

Really don't think the shooting at victors house was a burglary, it seemed too "calm" for that!

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2013 08:04

I think they mean when the town flooded last time 1977 - there's a church steeple in the middle of the damn

The old village is prob under there

LizTerrine · 03/07/2013 08:48

WiseChildren, I totally agree that Lucy is a previous revenant. I think she almost wanted to die when Serge stabbed her - or at least accepted it as her fate. I think she may disappear from the hospital under mysterious circumstances quite soon...

OP posts:
LizTerrine · 03/07/2013 08:49

Blondes, did you get 1977 from the date of Victor's death? If it was then, I think we can safely assume that Pierre is very deeply embroiled in the flooding of the old village!

OP posts:
LizTerrine · 03/07/2013 08:51

Ps, whoever thought the building Victor died in was the same as M. Costa's house - I agree. And I'm sure that in episode 1, Victor appeared in the school photo M. Costa burned. The one in which he also appeared as headmaster...

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2013 09:42

Got date from both newspaper whispers on semi naughty thread

But also said was 35years ago when got victor got shot and meant to be set in 2012 so would make 1977

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2013 09:44

And LIZ yes I think Pierre has something to do with dam and village flooding - he speaks of it happening before to camille when she returns

He knows that others have returned in the past

Aethelfleda · 03/07/2013 11:13

Lurking and loving this series!

Aside from the Homeopathic Dam Theory of Everything, how about the reason for the returns being a certain time of the year/phase of moon when some "alignment" happens permitting things to become returned? And the dam is a centrepoint, maybe built on a stone circle/leyline convergence, maybe the circular wall's central point ?

Did all the "accidents"/deaths occur at the same time of year/moon/day, could the priest and Pierre have carried out some sort of resurrection ritual that supercharged and brought waaay too many people back?

susiedaisy · 03/07/2013 11:24

I have no theories whatsoever but am loving this thread, but I do want to say sort that underpass out for goodness sake!! Smile

Abra1d · 03/07/2013 15:29

Yes, seriously, who would go down there anyway, given its grisly history? Even without the mad Serge it looks dodgy.

toldmywrath · 03/07/2013 15:54

And why do they need an underpass there anyway? Not exactly a traffic hot spot.

WiseChildren · 03/07/2013 16:05

So, was Victor already a returnee when he was shot? It didn't look like his family?
Also, the shooting seemed more like a killing spree, is Pierre now repentant & set himself up as some saviour/ cult figure for the town?
I'm now wondering if everyone is returned but they don't all realise it yet?

WiseChildren · 03/07/2013 16:11

And yes, yes, the underpass. I don't think I can cope watching anyone else walk through there!
So many 'off' things with the town that it makes me wonder if the whole thing is set in the twilight zone Smile

angelos02 · 03/07/2013 16:24

I'm loving this thread. I think it is one of the best things I've ever seen on TV. I'm a little bit obsessed with it!

flatmouse · 04/07/2013 09:59

Gosh. Where to start? Absolutely LOVING this series, and although my French passable, it's not great hence i'm having to properly watch for the subtitles as well as listen.

Some great observations on this thread. I commented last night to DH that Pierre is collecting "les revenues" and i noticed Lena morphing into Camille whilst lying in the underpass. Very good casting of Lena and Camille.

Wondering if Thomas is lying about Simon suicide - we've not actually seen his death yet. But they are connected based on the morphing theories.

I think Serge and his mother died together - from Toni's comment a couple of episodes ago about him "being with her", but that could just have meant that he was dead and she was dead (IYSWIM).

The whole general acceptance from others of "Les Revenues" is very odd.

Looking forward to the next!

angelos02 · 04/07/2013 10:42

It seems that the returned can morph into the person responsible for their death?
Simon into Thomas
Camille into Lena
Victor into Serge

Oui? Non?

Janek · 04/07/2013 11:15

Nice theory angelos, but i don't think serge could have been responsible for victor's death, and when did camille morph into lena?
