Well, here we are again, another French Open. Yay ! Grin

It's a shame we wont see Murray, as he was playing very well, it would have been great to see the Top 5 'together' again.

No prizes for guessing who the favourite for the Mens is, VAMOS RAFA ! I'd love to see him win it for the 8th time.

Roger Fed is looking well, just started playing , it would be good to see him do well, although we all know Wimby is his best tournament.

Novak seemed to be struggling a bit earlier this year, after the Aussie Open win, it will be interesting to see how he fares this year on clay. Nicely set up so that he and Rafa will meet in the Semi's, should they both play well. Which easily leads to Rafa for the Final, and his 8th win ! Don't forget, Novak fans, that Rafa beat Nole in 4 sets last year. Wink

Serena Williams is looking her usual belting self, just thrashed her opponent, she must be a consideration for the win, as must last years winner, Maria Sharapova. I'd like to see Laura Robson do well, and Heather Watson, but realistically Laura could be out in the first round.

Hope everybody enjoys the tennis as much as I do, I'm going to have a great fortnight, 9:30am to 9:00pm everyday. Bliss !

Looking forward to having our usual daft threads running, along with the ogling and arguments. Here's to another great summer of tennis ! Wine

It was all a bit deflating- although obviously, it's good Rafa has had 2 easy-ish matches, coming into what would ordinarily be a 'final' match.

IreneR · 05/06/2013 20:03

On to the men's semis, then, which someone here called the defacto final, since it is thought whomever wins the Rafa/Djoko match will take it all on Sunday. I hope Jo proves that wrong....

So does Jankovic not grunt? I watched their match at the gym with its excellent big screen TVs but with the sound off. I was assuming they both yelled their heads off....

CremeEggThief · 05/06/2013 20:22

First time for years and years that all the mens' quarter finals have been straight set matches.

I opened the back door and listened to the birds in my back garden, whilst watching Sharapova versus Jankovic, to drown out the noise of Sharapova today :o. What a weird match!

My picks to win are Djokovic (sadly) and Serena.

marjproops · 05/06/2013 21:23

even tho french still going on, Now looking forward to the grass court season-my fave.

only thing I like about summer.

will get the strawberries, my 5 year old bottle of pimms (is it still drinkable?)

Hope Mardy fish will be well. wheres Soderling these days?

I like the early rounds when theres more match choice (on bbc anyway on red button), plus when they show the doubles and agree with poster who said about Bahrami matches.

wish theyd show legends more, Bahrami/Leconte and the rest.

marjproops · 05/06/2013 21:24

Shriekpova and Aza again. mute button on standby.

for me Azas the lesser of 2 evils so ill go for her.

Raahh · 05/06/2013 21:35

marj-Soderling has been really ill- glandular fever, I think, for a couple of years. It's the first time in years the Swedes have not had a top 100 player. In fact, I don't think they have anyone in the top 300.

And Bahrami was playing with Cash today, which is just wrong, imo!Grin

marjproops · 05/06/2013 21:38

Raah thanx, I did know that about robin, its just hes taking ages to recover, or hes not into tennis any more?

Cant stand Cash. hes good on his programme on CNN 'open court' but hes so full of himself and always looks like hes in competition with the funny guys and hes just not funny.

Raahh · 05/06/2013 21:41

Just taking forever to recover, sadly.
I never liked cash, and his climbing antics at Wimbledon pissed me off. Lendl was robbedGrin

marjproops · 05/06/2013 21:47

TBH it was Cash that got me big time into tennis, didn't care for it before. It was early days Cash in his little shorts and headband and was nice looking then Grin.

but yy agree with Lendl was robbed (tho ive never been a fan of Lendl think hes doing a cracking job with ANdy).

But Cash not improving with age and ego! he reminds me of the love child of a rolling stone and suzie Quatro!!!!

purpleprincess · 05/06/2013 21:49

Yay a tennis thread!! I agree that the ITV coverage is rubbish (turned on to watch highlights last night after the news and instead it was Emmerdale!) Have also watched on British Eurosport 1 & 2 which has an advert for Turkish Airlines between every break which is really annoying. I must admit I'm in the VAMOS RAFA! camp but have a feeling that Djoko might beat him. Would be good to see Jo-Wily win - I like an underdog! Currently talking tennis on 5live until 10pm.

MrsVamosRAFA · 05/06/2013 22:18

Now will you all STOP the negativity. NOW, please ! Grin

You're all starting to sound like ITV4 commentators. Wink

Yes, yes, we know Novak beat Rafa in Monte Carlo, on clay, Hmm BUT Rafa beat Novak where it matters, ON CLAY at RG in the FINAL last year ! Of course Rafa will win the semi. Smile

All fortnight they have waffled on about Rafa's fitness and how 'good' he is, yet I haven't seen Novak setting the place on fire either. He hasn't played brilliantly, just had matches where his opponent really stood no chance of beating him over 5 sets, even poor Tommy today, who looked a couple of times like he could have had 2 sets off him.

Don't forget too, Rafa 'only' took 4 to beat him in last year's Final, I'd love to see him beat him in the semi in straight sets. That'll learn 'em all !

Unfortunately it looks like the Women's is a done deal, Serena has been relentless. I'm not sure that either Shrieky or Vicky could beat her, and I don't think Sara E will. I don't think she will be able to sustain the barrage of shots, Serena hits the balls so hard, most opponents are lucky just to hit them, never mind get them over the net and back at her ! I think if Serena were to lose, it will be because of the so-called personal battle she seems to have with herself on court sometimes, when she does have a bad game, or couple of points. I could be wrong ?

Don't mind who wins the other semi between Ferrer and Tsonga. It would be great for either of them. I thought it was odd today that there were comments that it seems to be falling into place for Tsonga to win, when there seems to be the opinion that he couldn't beat Rafa or Novak ? I guess if the WILL to win is enough, maybe he does stand a chance ?

Roll on Friday !

VAMOS RAFA
Grin

Raahh · 06/06/2013 11:48

Well, I am joining the Shock that the mixed doubles final is bring played now. I agreed with Petchey/Santoro- it's just an inconvenience to get out of the way. Really rude to the players, imo.

Raahh · 06/06/2013 11:51

But doubles does make me giggle- all the whispering into wristbands after each pointGrin

Raahh · 06/06/2013 12:25

And they don't play a 3rd set? Just as poxy tie break?

Raahh · 06/06/2013 12:28

Well- congratulations to Hradecka and Cermak- even though there was hardly anyone there to watch you!

marjproops · 06/06/2013 13:02

I love the doubles too, and I miss them not showing more.

I remmebr back in the 80's the top doubles teams- Leach/Pugh-Casal/Sanchez-the gulliksons etc etc and they were shown a lot more, and this was the days BEFORE the red button and multi screen and sky channels.

maybe its cos there are a lot more singles players? last year I think it was 123 in the singles draw?

Raahh · 06/06/2013 13:19

It's a very odd decision-the mixed is just as big a deal to those taking part.
Even if they had played it 11am saturday morning-at least it would have been ona finals day, and the atmosphere would have reflected that. Maybe they are expecting really bad weatherConfused ?

LottieJenkins · 06/06/2013 13:22

Just caught the end of Sharapova's match and i am glad it was the end. OMG...........she sounds like she is having an orgasm every time she hits the ball. I would have switched it off if it not been the end! Hmm

Raahh · 06/06/2013 13:22

Ha ha! They have just mentioned the noise from Azarenka/Shrieky this afternoon.

And the fact that when Azaranka was practicing, she didn't make a peep. Make of that what you will...Grin

Shock I had to go out- and now it IS RAINING!

Obviously the match scheduling people knew the weather forecast better than anyone else!

MrsVamosRAFA · 06/06/2013 16:09

Back on court now, Raahh. Smile

Come on, Vicky !

They are noisy buggers, aren't they ?

OP posts:
CremeEggThief · 06/06/2013 16:22

Argh! TOO NOISY!!!

Raahh · 06/06/2013 16:25

The noise is dreadful. Fine them, I say. Mind you, at least they are as bad as each other,so one isn't disturbing the other!
