Watched it last night. Tis good, but disturbing. Gillian Anderson very good. Jamie Dornan scary. Anyone else see it?

so it's just the violence against women that you like, is it? Grin

BOF · 10/06/2013 22:56

"...anyone who thought this was anything more than a piece of stylishly-shot exploitative nonsense should be taking a long hard look at themselves."

Aitch, you know I love you, but this is like when cod rocks up with "You fraeks"- it's intensely irritating to feel sneered at for simply differing in opinion.

I read that on IMDB about the 12 episode pitch, Aitch.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 10/06/2013 23:00

what a amazing position to take, riots, as someone who apparently enjoyed a drama where women were being sexually assaulted and murdered. am baffled. what did you think would happen to her? or the next one, or the next one, or the next one? Cubitt only invented them to kill them, they're not real.

SoTiredAgain · 10/06/2013 23:00

If you look at my past posts, you will see that I think there are lots of holes etc but it's entertainment - not to be taken seriously. And it's fun to chat about it and speculate too.

I'm not saying you should fuck off, I guess I just don't understand why you are that interested in participating when most of the people are clearly enjoying it. You may be the voice of reason but we're too involved and enjoying too much to see reason.

Anyway, I need to get off to bed. Night.

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 10/06/2013 23:03

I think it was well written actually. I enjoyed it.

You don't normally see the depth of characters in a 5 part series. And we saw a lot of the killers character and the corresponding traits in GA.

But I too am easily pleased Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 10/06/2013 23:03

hey bof, why not read the thread, it's chock full of people sneering at me for having a different opinion... i genuinely do find the idea of people cheering this show on quite disturbing. it's a series of horrible rape fantasies, no wonder Cubitt's defending himself in the Guardian. (although weirdly, it doesn't appear that he needed to).
makes total sense about the 12 parter. no reason given as to why they didn't make the whole thing, i take it?

No, no reason.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 10/06/2013 23:05

agree re sociopathic similarities in male and female lead. but what's that about, really?

DelphiSwimsLate · 10/06/2013 23:05

I agree BOF I think there is more to be unravelled in the same way as with Life on Mars, which I loved. I am going to watch this ep again on iPlayer as I know I missed a couple of things..
I do love GA in it and she and AP make a great pairing, I think. Also love GAs wardrobe. Why can't I come up with outfits like that?

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 10/06/2013 23:05

oh i watched it for work.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 10/06/2013 23:06

do you eat, Delphi? i think that's the first thing you have to give up in order to wear clothes like GA does. Wink

BOF · 10/06/2013 23:07

(And of course I've read the thread, I've been reading from the beginning. I don't want to have a big go at you, which is why I prefaced my remarks in the way I did; I'm just explaining from my point of view why the way you've posted here has not been well-received.)

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 10/06/2013 23:09

i think i've seen enough changes on MN over the years to know why people are responding the way they are doing...

BOF · 10/06/2013 23:09

Delphi- I think that LoM was more satisfying though, because even though there was more to come, it still worked as a stand-alone series. I don't think this did.

BOF · 10/06/2013 23:11

OK Aitch- that's why I feel bristly about it then. Hopefully I have not become a prime example of The Decline Of MN yet Grin.

ImperialBlether · 10/06/2013 23:13

I feel cheated. It's like buying a novel that comes in two parts and you are only told on the last line that you are only reading the first part. Can you imagine reading a thriller and right at the very end it said, "To be continued..."?

His wife loves her job. If she showed anything at all, it was that. So why would she agree to go off like that, without saying goodbye to her parents, without giving in her notice, just when she's pregnant, so she won't get maternity leave, with a man who's shagged the fifteen year old neighbour? Why would she do that? I know she seemed a bit daft at times, but surely nobody would do that. And particularly nobody would do that after being asked to lie to the police about where he was.

Did he take his stuff from the attic?

I know it's a common thing in fiction for a police officer to bait a serial killer but ffs, wearing that nail varnish was just asking for trouble. She had no security around her.

His daughter... his wife said she had said to her that there was a woman in the attic. If her daughter was aged 2, then maybe his wife might think she was just being fanciful. Wouldn't she just say, "Show me what you mean"? It wasn't as though the daughter thought she'd dreamed it - she knew she'd seen it. I thought at the end his daughter would say, "Are you going to take those things from the attic?" Why didn't her mum listen to her?

DelphiSwimsLate · 10/06/2013 23:17

Yeah I hear you BOF. LoM really did hook me - probably because the premise was so curious. With this, it's all pretty upfront as to what he's doing. Perhaps not the 'why' but I don't really sympathise enough or am hooked enough to want to find out iyswim.

wigglesrock · 10/06/2013 23:18

ImperialBlether she has a gun, all PSNI do and I thought they laboured the point a bit when she was redoing her firearms practice.

I wasn't sure if they were completely upping sticks or just leaving for a bit. That's what confused me the most.

Ps Somebody was filming something pretty fancy round the areas of Belfast they seem to be using a few weeks ago, and for once I don't think it was Game of Thrones Wink

DelphiSwimsLate · 10/06/2013 23:19

Still very watchable though, I think.

VenusStarr · 10/06/2013 23:20

I enjoyed the series. Initially I was a bit disappointed that he wasn't caught but there are so many uncertainties that it will be a good opener for series 2.

I don't think the wife has forgiven him, she said she didn't have a choice, he threatened that she would lose her job if he was found out about the 15yr old, plus she is pregnant with 2 other children.

Annie has regained consciousness so potentially may be able to help with the enquiries.

The burnt out car will be identifiable to him, plus I doubt everything will be destroyed, so some traces of the notebook or mannequin will remain.

What happened to the necklace?

Was everything packed up in the house? - someone will find the drawing...

I did think that GA might have recognised him from the e-fit as she saw him in the corridor at the police station. I reckon there was some DNA at the scene of the last murder as he was sloppy and didn't take as much care. Plus his head was cut, at first I thought it was the man's blood but in later scenes he did have a little bump and cut on his head.

He is very arrogant and he thought he had the upper hand on GA but you could tell he was agitated when she told him what she already knew. He won't be able to stop, he wants GA I think and she knows this that's why she let him call her personal mobile. I'm just thinking out loud really :)

What am I going to do with my Monday nights!

BOF · 10/06/2013 23:21

Oooh, wiggles!

hollyisalovelyname · 10/06/2013 23:21

I don't understand.... If it was to be just one series was that the ending? He just flits off. Did they then decide to commission a new series mid way through the show as it was popular for BBC 2 ?
