Following on from all the chat about the Thorn Birds on the fancying priests thread in AIBU, I was thinking about all those corny dramas from my youth.

Like Secret Army Me and my mum used to try and remember the order of the roads, canals and railways each week.

Or Tenko. One of the few programmes of the 70s or 80s to pass the Bechdel test.

LemonMousse - noooo Shock. I wanted to shag the Prince of Wales circa 1890, I think. Edward VII? I wanted to go back in time and be a royal hooker.

I bet no one is as old as me remembers 'The Lotus Eaters', another one set in Crete, Agios Nicholias in fact.
It was about a couple that ran a bar and she was a 'sleeper', who was ordered to spy on her husband.

Oh I liked the Gentle Touch. I must have spent a decade at least doing nothing but watch shite TV dramas - I recognise just about all of these, which given that I didn't move to the UK till 1976 is impressive.

The Cedar tree! Wasn't it broadcast a little earlier than Rainbow? Another one, like El Dorado that was suddenly axed with unfulfilled story lines.
Is anyone old enouugh to remember a series called "The Brothers"? All about family rivalry within a freight haulage company, sounds curiously dull but I was very taken with it.
Also, a serialisation of one of my fabouite books, A Married Man by Piers Paul Read; it starred a pre-Lector Ant(h?)ony Hopkins. It is available on DVD but not in a UK suitable format. Very annoying.

I remember Crown Court being on at lunchtimes. When I was little, I thought it was real rather than a drama.

Winds of War was repeated recently on some obscure satellite channel. I tried to watch it but it was so slow, hardly anything happens for hours! I loved it at the time.

. Not so bad it was good. Just dreadful. But we still watched it as students in the 80s.

LadyBeagle my DH was talking about this . Was it Midnight Caller or something?

Report

The Professionals! Loved that. Used to hide and watch it with my father then my mother would march back in and make me go to bed. She sued to torment us by watching Edward VII. I loathed that.

LBE Midnight Caller, Gary Cole was the lead. That was quite good.

Remember The Rockford Files? Same plot every week, if I recall. We still watched it. Ah, the days of 3 channels!
