letsblowthistacostand · 11/09/2012 21:04

This is what a proper pie should look like

VikingVagine · 11/09/2012 21:04

Was on BBC2.

letsblowthistacostand · 11/09/2012 21:05

or this

coffeeinbed · 11/09/2012 21:05

I think they said they wanted an open pie.
Or did I imagine that?

hopingtodrive · 11/09/2012 21:06

has it finished? oh noes :( iplAyer for me then

coffeeinbed · 11/09/2012 21:06

Then again, most of the so called pies tonight were tarts.
I don't know what the difference is, but I do know a tart when I see it.

letsblowthistacostand · 11/09/2012 21:08

Open pie, you say?

letsblowthistacostand · 11/09/2012 21:09

Yes they were all tarts. You can tell because they used TART PANS.

heather1980 · 11/09/2012 21:09

LETSBLOW- Martha stewart is not really famous here in the UK and i've never seen her magazine on sale.

coffeeinbed · 11/09/2012 21:10

Ohh!
Good pie.

letsblowthistacostand · 11/09/2012 21:13

I realize that Heather, but you are not on a TV show being asked to make an American-style pie, are you? If asked to imagine a pie you would get in the US, would you think of the ones on the program or the ones in the link? And MS Living is available in WHSmith.

BigHairyFlowers · 11/09/2012 21:22

I am deeply traumatised by James' "I am about to cry" face. Sad

TwoIfBySea · 11/09/2012 22:04

Heather, Martha Stewart Living is in WH Smiths usually near all the "nice houses" magazines. It makes me feel very inadequate!

I bought her Cupcake book from The Book People, after working out the Americanisms we've made a few but only a few as they are very moreish and very creamy, yummy, ooh. Best made when lots of people will be there so you don't end up making a portly pig of yourself.

I noticed that a few of Cathryn's "tips" are in that book.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/09/2012 22:09

(American here, too) I'm not all that upset over their use of tart pans- surely those are far more widely available than a proper American-style pie plate here. In fact, the last time I made key lime pies, I had to make one of them in my tart pan. I only have one American pie plate, and that is one I imported myself. :)

And tbh there's only a couple of US-style pies I bother to make over here: key lime, and pumpkin. I'm far more fond of cakes and cookies. Grin

pumpkinsweetie · 11/09/2012 22:13

Might have to make the pumpkin one for HalloweenSmile

hiviolet · 11/09/2012 22:38

When I think of American pies I think of the ones I've seen on Man V Food! Basically pastry bases with some sort of pudding filling topped with about two feet of whipped cream.

Thanks for the baby birthday wishes Hazel! GBBO really inspires me to bake All The Things for her birthday tea, but I think a layer cake, a dozen cupcakes and some sort of bread will be my limit.

Looks like next week's episode is quite dramatic! Was it John who was injured? I'm guessing Danny turned out to be useful.

LetUsPrey · 11/09/2012 23:56

Just watched it.

Agree that James's little face when he looked like he was going to cry made me want to give him a big hug. He wasn't wearing one of his jumpers. He needs to be wearing a jumper. I think they have magical baking properties. Hope he improves next week.

SophySinclair · 12/09/2012 00:24

Cathryn gets on my tits last nerve.

I like Brendan.

Bilbobagginstummy · 12/09/2012 06:16

Brendan is excellent, but I find him a bit creepy. Sorry, Brendan.
