"Choice of Sunday night viewing - 1st World War Horror on BBC1 or a Man Chops is Arm Off on C4"
Both with that Clemence whatsername.

Fpund the first half very slow, but got drawn in gradually. Couldn't make out what Isabelle was saying half the time - but that might be age.... In fact fpu d them all a bit mumbly.

letthembe · 23/01/2012 22:09

Loved most of the book, I wasn't too keen on the 1970s bits, so I don't mind that they have been cut for this adaptation. Far too many and far too long, s
facial shots - boring and they didn't really build the sexual tension. For me, the best part of the book is descriptions of the conditions in the trenches and particularly in the tunnels. I felt this was some what lost in the program.

worzelswife · 23/01/2012 22:40

It was ok. I quite enjoyed it. Bits brilliant, bits not, same as the book really, which incidentally I think is appallingly written in parts. No idea why people rave so much about it. I love the story, but the actual writing makes me cringe.

FaithHopeAndKevin · 24/01/2012 13:53

What is wrong with his face???

FaithHopeAndKevin · 24/01/2012 13:55

He looks like him

TheScarlettPimpernel · 24/01/2012 14:18

Urgh, don't do that, Faith! That man has the creepiest face I've ever seen

I feel slightly sorry for him actually because I don't think he could ever play a sympathetic character with taht phizzog, even though he actually is rather a fine actor...

FaithHopeAndKevin · 24/01/2012 14:41

Birdsong guy has great eyes. But you only notice them if you can get past his mouth, which let's face it, is vair unlikely.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 24/01/2012 14:45

I prefer Jack Firebrace. What with him not looking like a wet schoolboy who is a Bit Sad because his Mum didn't get his cricket whites clean and now the Team Captain doesn't love him anymore.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 24/01/2012 14:50

Just for the avoidance of doubt

hot

not hot

Quenelle · 24/01/2012 14:58

We watched it last night. I convinced DH he would like it because he enjoyed Charlotte Grey.

But All he does is gaze into space and his lips are too pale absolutely sums it up for me. What's with all the flesh-coloured lipstick? And enough of the shots of him mooning at her and then her mooning at him FFS!

And yes, they all mumbled.

PostBellumBugsy · 24/01/2012 15:00

Wow, Scarlett am liking hot Jack Firebrace! Thank you for that lovely link. [need swoon emoticon]

TheScarlettPimpernel · 24/01/2012 15:04

Post I am mildly obssessed.

If you too wish to share my obsession, just read this

"I worked for a while as a teaching assistant, while I was struggling. I really enjoyed it, working with kids with special needs, autism."

ARGH! Stop being perfect, you perfect perfect man! Grin

Can't see E Redmayne in a classroom somehow

PostBellumBugsy · 24/01/2012 15:09

Melting! Have found my next James Bond! Wink

I will never ever understand grown women fancying hairless boys a la Redmayne. Give me a big manly man broad of shoulder and with the weary air of a man who has Seen Some Stuff any day of the week

EvilTwins · 24/01/2012 15:18

Scarlett - I am here to prove you wrong!

In 2004, I was teaching in a crappy inner-city comp in North London. We had a partnership going with the Almeida Theatre, who has a totally brilliant education dept. Mr Redmayne was starring in a production of "The Goat" with Jonathan Pryce (interesting play about a man who leaves his wife for a goat named Sylvia) and my Sixth Form GNVQ Performing Arts students went along to see it. The education coordinator then brought Eddie into school to run a workshop with the class - there were only 4 of them - three keen girls and a boy who was taking drama because he loved it and wasn't much good at anything else. He was an EAL student who was partially deaf and had a speech impairment. Eddie was absolutely brilliant - particularly with this boy, who produced a really moving piece of drama based on a memory (theme of the workshop) with Eddie's help. He was also very honest and open with the kids, wasn't at all starry, precious or pretentious, despite the fact that the school was about as far removed from his own experience of education as you can get. I was impressed with him that day. Ours was not the only school he came into during that project, so other kids in North London would have had a similar experience.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 24/01/2012 15:20

ARSE! Grin

(I don't really mean arse obviously: I am glad he is nice. But I still wouldn't shag him, which I am sure he is quite desolated about Hmm )

PostBellumBugsy · 24/01/2012 15:21

Oh good grief EvilTwins - now have even more massive crush. What a lovely story.

EvilTwins · 24/01/2012 15:26

Don't panic, Scarlett, he's gay. That was something he told us when he came to the school - he wanted the kids to explore a memory with powerful emotions, so as an example, he told us about the day he came out to his rather conservative father.

PostBellumBugsy · 24/01/2012 15:32

Doh! I'm a bit thick - or perhaps got all hot & bothered with my Jack Firebrace lusting! Got my Eddie's & Joseph's mixed up and thought that Evil Twins story was about Mr Mawle. So still lovely story about Eddie, but wouldn't boff him either, gay or otherwise.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 24/01/2012 15:32

Oh Gawd love him for being so open and honest. That's the kind of encounter that can do a child a hell of a lot of good in later life.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 24/01/2012 16:10

IS he gay? Didn't he go out with Carey Mulligan for a bit? And I'm sure he mentioned ex-girlfriends in an interview I read recently.

Clawdy · 25/01/2012 17:28

Just googled him and he doesn't appear to be gay?

EvilTwins · 25/01/2012 17:31

Perhaps he was making it up then Hmm
