~Another one here who absolutely loathed the book - a load of utter crap - but it's the sort of potboiler that might transfer well to sunday night tv.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 22/01/2012 21:43

Jack Firebrace acting Stephen Wraysford off the screen: am I right or am I right?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/01/2012 21:51

You're right, he's a great character in the book too.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 22/01/2012 21:59

Yar. I liked him more than Wraysford in the book and I'm liking him more here, too.

Someone explain to me how Eddie Redmayne got the part? He hasn't actually changed his facial expression yet. And he looks like a mouth breather.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/01/2012 22:04

All he does is gaze into space and his lips are too pale

belcantwait · 22/01/2012 22:08

He makes me want to retch and his lips remind me of a vagina bleughhhhhh I wanted to watch but I can't he's making me feel siiiiiick

YY his lips are plain weird. I was rewatching Pillars of Earth the other day and he managed a lot of pouting in that too.

poorbuthappy · 22/01/2012 22:10

Hated the book, so not watching.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 22/01/2012 22:10

Early 20th century bras: pretty, but unsupportive.

This is amazingly tedious given the war, guts and oral sex Hmm

EnjoyResponsibly · 22/01/2012 22:11

Oh my goodness, that is a vair handsome chap (the lead actor with the lips)

JoantheFennel · 22/01/2012 22:11

I'm enjoying it

EnjoyResponsibly · 22/01/2012 22:13

I'm going to enlist.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 22/01/2012 22:25

Arf @ TSP.

MollieO · 22/01/2012 22:25

I thought it was rather good. Wasn't expecting to like it at all.

FooFooForgetMeNot · 22/01/2012 22:30

It's a while since I've read it but think Stephen Wraysford's stiff character is part of the text, born out of his doomed love affair/pressures of leadership caring for his men and the brave miners alongside his infantry men; and Jack Firebrace is the more humane and instantly more likable character. In the book Elizabeth names her own son after Jack Firebrace's.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/01/2012 22:34

I think his character works well in the war scenes, less so in the pre-war parts. I'm enjoying it though, good acting on the whole and the settings look pretty realistic to my mind.

plus3 · 22/01/2012 22:38

Ohh I loved it - beautifully done.

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/01/2012 22:40

I think it's an excellent adaptation, especially the scenes in the trenches.
The romance is what it is in the book, it was always a back story for me, his description of WW1 is just so moving, and the BBC have done it very well.

wintera · 22/01/2012 22:44

Loved it. Not read the book but might order it now though. I think Eddie RedMayne is a fab up and coming young actor. I remember he won me over when he played Angel in the BBC Tess too. Very good, looking forward to next episode.

ClothesOfSand · 22/01/2012 22:44

I really liked it. I'm a fan of drippiness and lingering looks. Also I've liked Eddie Redmayne since he played Angel Clare.

ClothesOfSand · 22/01/2012 22:45

X post!

I went to see him in a play at the Royal Court. He was very good in that too. I hope he continues to have a decent career in acting.

wintera · 22/01/2012 22:50

He's currently playing Richard II at the mo until Feb and the reviews I have read have been fantastic. He's definitely an actor to watch in future.
