I'm off to bed early tonight to watch CTM and then I'm looking forward to Birdsong. Will anybody else be watching it ?

I saw him in The Goat at The Almeida in 2003 (?) - he was excellent in that.

BendyBob · 22/01/2012 23:08

Phew! Hard work I thought.

Will stick with it, but don't feel I know anything about the characters after all that.

Fregley · 22/01/2012 23:11

She's all wrong. He's divine. Also in a week with Marilyn

exoticfruits · 22/01/2012 23:24

I loved the book.Without it I would have great trouble working it all out.

headintheclouds · 22/01/2012 23:32

Read the book years ago and loved it. Also thought that was amazing piece of TV,and if it doesn't win bAFTAs Ill be very surprised. Thought all the characters were well cast and beautifully portrayed. I sobbed ,and I can't wait until next week and cant remember the ending but it's bound to be tragic!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/01/2012 23:34

Same here, but having read the book it all seems to be moving too quickly.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/01/2012 23:35

There was only one part in the book that made me cry, I'm waiting to see if the programme has the same effect, it was towards the end.

frankie3 · 22/01/2012 23:42

He is also going to be Marius in the film of les miserables. Hope he can sing well!

JamNan · 22/01/2012 23:51

Could not get into the book either and sent it to the charity shop. How did this book ever get recommended for the GCSE reading list?

And this TV film is just awful. Period Porn.

BackforGood · 23/01/2012 00:03

I caught this by accident earlier. Not heard of the book, and nearly switched off 1/2 hour in as seemed a bit odd and very slow moving (I thought it was a one off, didn't realise there were more episodes to come). I stuck with it though - maybe it will all become a bit more interesting next episode. I do like a bit of easy on the eye Sunday night TV period drama.

SwedishEdith · 23/01/2012 00:07

Hmm, I hated him as Angel Claire as well but he's not a nice character so maybe that's good acting? No, thinking about it, I accept he can act but I just don't like watching him

LaurieFairyCake · 23/01/2012 00:26

It's my favourite book and I could only bear to read it once - sobbed out loud beside the pool in Cyprus with my then-husband telling me I was being embarrassing about 14 years ago I think.

Thought tonight's adaptation very good.

Enjoyed it although did feel he did a lot of meaningful staring. Thought Fleur Delacourt was excellent.

Who said there's going to be a film of Les Miserables? I remember hearing this at least 20 years ago - still waiting.

KatAndKit · 23/01/2012 10:18

I loved the book although I did first read it aged 19. I was totally underwhelmed by last nights tv version though. Perhaps the thing about the book is how it is written or something as I found it deeply moving to read the first time but this adaptation didn't have much effect on me at all.

blondiep14 · 23/01/2012 10:34

Same here KandK

PostBellumBugsy · 23/01/2012 10:41

It's a hard book to dramatise, but I think they did it fairly well. I blubbed my way through most of the book, but only got a bit moist eyed watching last night. Didn't think they captured the utter disgustingness of trench warfare quite well enough, but did think the sex scenes were good.

I don't think the modern part is being included in the dramatisation sovery, which is a shame, as the bit when she visits the Battlefields is incredibly moving.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 23/01/2012 11:22

No, I read that they are leaving out the modern part. I didn't think the sexual tension sizzled quite as much as it does in the book, nor did the battlefield scenes have quite the impact, but they were still good. I have rarely enjoyed dramatisations of books I have loved, but think this is better than most.

Ragwort · 23/01/2012 12:18

Disappointing, I had loved the book but couldn't really get into the TV adaptation - must have fallen asleep during the sex bit Grin as I didn't see that at all !

bacon · 23/01/2012 12:40

What is is with actors now - that they have to have pouty over emphasised lips even the men???? Then the camera has to hold the over long gaze while no one speaks and you want to wind the story on as I found this painful. The oral sex scenes were too far for me and not want I would want to see with family members.

I found the war scenes brilliant and this part drew you into the pain and suffering but spoilt by the weak lovers. It lacks power....he doesnt say anything - I wanted to shout "speak you limp skinny man".

I will be watching the next part - but for the war reasons not the wet lovers!

mumdebump · 23/01/2012 13:50

Loved it. So much better than the book. Hated the 1970s bits in the book with the badly written female character, so glad that they were cut out. The best bits in the book were the tunnelling bits and I thought the TV version really got the claustophobic atmosphere just right. Thought Eddie Redmayne excellent.

Thought it was really dull and ponderous - not interested in the characters. The lead was erggh! Gave up halfway through and watched Borgen on catch up instead - bliss!
