I'm off to bed early tonight to watch CTM and then I'm looking forward to Birdsong. Will anybody else be watching it ?

I'm not sure I liked it, perhaps I need to see it through and/or read the book to be able to judge properly.

Pillars of the Earth! I thought I recognised him from somewhere.

I forgot just how much I hated this crappy book.

The higher suffering of posh people;
The stoic nobility of common folk;
The very idea that a 20 year old male virgin would think of giving a woman an orgasm, and by going down on her to boot;

I could go on but I'd be here all night. It's enough to say, it's shit, isn't it?

I didn't get on with the book but I'm loving the tv adaptation.

I just love any BBC period drama!!

The lead male is very unusual looking though, his lips being the same colour as his skin.

And all that bloody intense staring... as DH yelled at the screen "Just bloody shag each other why don't you??"

And shag they did.......Grin

Love the actor who plays Firebrass (think thats his name). He was in an episode of the Street, fabulous drama.

soverylucky because I had 1hr 25mins to kill and I wanted to plum a new depth to my hatred of Birdsong and Sebastian Faulks.

And I think you'll find 'magnificent' is more easily spelled 'shit'.

limitedperiodonly · 25/01/2012 22:52

'plumb' not 'plum', obviously

limitedperiodonly · 25/01/2012 23:08

Just read the whole thread to find that this chancing shit that was clearly sent back to Faulks by his publisher with a note reading: 'We'll think about it if you invent a romance angle for the laydees' is on the GCSE list.

SwedishEdith · 26/01/2012 00:24

yyy at the unlikeliness of this "The very idea that a 20 year old male virgin would think of giving a woman an orgasm, and by going down on her to boot" Definitely SF projecting his own fantasy there.

limitedperiodonly · 26/01/2012 09:17

Definitely SF projecting his own fantasy there

Yep. What stunned me was his lengthy description of how the woman was feeling during her orgasm.

Thanks for involving me in your pervy fantasy, Sebastian. It's been nearly 20 years since I read your book and I still feel a bit grubby.

By the way, you were way off the mark. I hope for her sake Mrs Faulks has managed to point you in the right direction in the intervening years.

PostBellumBugsy · 26/01/2012 09:23

Made for a great love / sex scene on the telly. Am going to have to re-read the scene in the book tonight so I can feel pervy! Grin

Davros · 26/01/2012 20:50

Tedious and predictable, struggled to the end but will give part 2 a go, probably.

HoneyWithLemon · 29/01/2012 21:37

No one watching this week?

exoticfruits · 29/01/2012 22:06

It's a bit grim! On computer as well-undiluted it is a bit harrowing.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/01/2012 22:08

I think it's better than last week, still not as gripping as the book, but very moving.

ValentineBombshell · 29/01/2012 22:23

Am terribly moved

spikemomma · 29/01/2012 22:26

I did. Sob! What with that and midwives I'm emotionally wrecked!

Birdsong query- in the book does he go to live with her sister, cos it looked like she had feelings for him, so he would 'be loved' and 'love his new family', kinda thing?

mynameis · 29/01/2012 22:26

After that and Call the Midwife I am all cried out Sad

LadyBeagleEyes · 29/01/2012 22:27

The second part was much better than the first, the battlefield scenes were amazing.
It was very moving, though the book was better.

LadyBeagleEyes · 29/01/2012 22:29

Yes spike he does.
In the book, it starts in the seventies with his grandaughter looking into the history of her family.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/01/2012 22:30

Was in tears by the end. I didn't think I was going to be, but it got me just as he emerged from underground.

ShowOfHands · 29/01/2012 22:31

spike, in the book Stephen and Jeanne married and raised Francoise together iirc.

Pickgo · 29/01/2012 22:32

Blimey I feel totally washed out with all that. Much better this week.

spikemomma · 29/01/2012 22:32

I thought it was really good, very moving, and on a shallow note, I thought he was hot- more than the other guy that mn ladies were lathering up over last week! He could cast those yearning mournful eyes over me any day....

ShowOfHands · 29/01/2012 22:32

LadyBeagle, I remember being more gripped by Elizabeth (his grandaughter) in the book than by Stephen.

OrmIrian · 29/01/2012 22:37

Didn't like the book much but have to admit I was in tears this week. I guess that's shat WWI does for you. I just imagine ds1 and his classmates in a year or so being butchered I'm a sea of mud for no fucking reason at all.
