I still need to talk about it.

Mary 6ets drunk in order to 6o thou6h with marryin6 Sir Richard, simulatneously Mathew 6ets drunk to drown his sorrows. Sybil and Tom waft past in a bubble of love and inspire Mary and Matty to finally 6et it on. Later Sir R forces himself on Mary, she becomes upduffed and doesn't know who the father is.

True story.

Moln · 07/11/2011 23:40

I remember the Eric Bana film

stares wistfully into the distance

Least that Henry didn't deep fry his cook!!!

Yes giving Anna a sex room as a wedding gift, mary you saucy cow!! Mind you didn't she have bum sex so not to de-virginate herself, or something to the likes.

Moln · 07/11/2011 23:40

(just had a momentary panic I wrote deep fry his cock, rather than cook)

Bossybritches22 · 08/11/2011 00:00

Glad you Downton fanatics supporters have carried on, couldn't wait until Christmas to start 'fred 4!!

Did anyone else find Thomas' smarmy behaviour rather nauseating, trying to get all the staff to find him suddenly indispensible?

Still think he's O'Briens long lost little brother or possibly son.

Fiderer · 08/11/2011 06:56

Still haven't seen Series 1 so don't know how horrid Thomas was then. He's a v good actor and wonderfully menacing.

It was meant to be nauseating, I think. He'd been so taken aback by having to rely on those he'd been crowing over and then thanks to Spanish Flu, they were suddenly reliant on him. V much in character that he was flaunting his comeback. Good for Mary to spot that and warn Carson.

Is Mrs Hughes really a "Mrs"? Wasn't there some convention that it was effectively only a title or indication of respect for women in similar positions? When she found Ethel and the Moustache she made some comment about being not v worldly.

Grumpla · 08/11/2011 09:02

Mrs is an honorary title, it was mentioned at some point.

I think she should have told Ethel that she agreed with her. Poor daft Ethel - good thing she is unwed or she'd have the FIL from hell...

I hope he dies of an apoplexy and Ethel and "Perhaps you can call me Gran" can live happily ever after with The Chubster.

MarthasHarbour · 08/11/2011 09:11

anyone else think that Matthew and Mary are modelled on Charles and Camilla.

I foresee another Lavvy type giving an ITV interview saying 'there were three of us in this marriage' then Lord 6 will see her off in Paris and M&M will live happily ever after in rottweiler bliss.

oh and i was loving Violet's reference to the 'Last Dinner in Paris' marvellous stuff!

MarthasHarbour · 08/11/2011 09:12

ah i think it was clear to Ethel that Mrs H agreed with her, i thought that was the warmest part of the episode TBH. I was so rooting for Ethel with her talk of a 'mothers love'

Bossybritches22 · 08/11/2011 09:15

fiderer Oh yes Thomas is a nauseatingly smarmy creep of the highest order & is after Carsons job you mark my words! Grin

Excellent acting by wotsisface.

grumpla I think you're right it was an honorary title for Housekeepers & Cooks, lawd knows why.

Grumpla · 08/11/2011 09:37

Fiderer we watched series 1 after starting series 2, it's well worth catching up on!

Animation · 08/11/2011 09:55

About Bates and Anna. Thought they looked a bit uncomfortable in that bedroom scene - like they'd been made to wait around a while with bare arma and back exposed to a cold studio. Anna gave a nice smile though at the end.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/11/2011 10:13

so did sir r buy that other big house conveniently close to downton...?

OP posts:
Fiderer · 08/11/2011 10:22

The house was never mentioned again, amazing place. Bugger to heat I bet.

Anna was lovely in the bed scene. Hope she and Bates have a happy end (and that we never see him in a bed scene again)

Meanwhile, Branson gets killed in the Irish War of Independence, being heroic as war journalist/political leader. Sybil comes back to DA heartbroken and Violet is kind and saves her pithy one-liners for the others (and us).

ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/11/2011 10:37

also, before m & mary dance; he is discussing the music 'from a show that flopped, lose a million'

would the word 'million' have been used then?

OP posts:
ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/11/2011 10:37

agree violet has a soft spot for pickle

OP posts:
ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/11/2011 10:39

yuck when carson ius ill in his pyjamas
reminds me of visiting my dad on a stinky mens ward in hospital

OP posts:
ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/11/2011 10:52

'Brien said - my lady, I want to ask your forgiveness, I did something which i bitterly regret, bitterly.

If cora remembers that, surely she'll ask her?

OP posts:
Fiderer · 08/11/2011 10:56

Yuck yes to Carson in pyjamas. Think poor Carson's dignity suffered more at having Lady M there and then the Evil Thomas than he did with the flu.

O'Brien can always claim that Cora was delirious if she brings it up. Don't think she'd confess, she'd be out on her super-fine-tuned ear if she did. Her conscience didn't seem to trouble her much till Cora was on her near-death-bed.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/11/2011 10:57

really jarring,
mary's accusation of Sir R coming to DA only to stop matthew falling into her arms in a tidal wave of grief

purlease. She would never have said this, she was all submissive to him when he threatened her never to cross him;

OP posts:
ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/11/2011 10:58

and what is epinephrine, dr death gave it to cora.

he only prescribed cinnamon and aspirin to lavvie

OP posts:
Animation · 08/11/2011 11:00

Seems like the men have to squeeze into very small beds - smaller than single - even Matthew!!

But Lav and Cora could spread out in Queen/King size beds.

Fiderer · 08/11/2011 11:00

Was she submissive or merely shocked/taking in/acknowledging the reality of her situation?

Don't believe she'd have played at being submissive. The accusation was more Mary than the submissiveness.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/11/2011 11:05

also he grabbed her when lavvie took a turn for the worse and she shook him off with a snarl. maybe not so submissive

I

OP posts:
ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/11/2011 11:07

Animation -

I noticed that too.
also did Lav actually croak in Mary's room? or did they move her

when she was first taken ill mary said to use hers as the fire was lit
never saw/heard about them moving her, but it was a diff room wasnt it?

pickle's bed in the hotel was tiny.

OP posts:
ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/11/2011 11:09

and why does anna wear an apron but OBrien doesnt? they're both ladies' maids. is it that OBrien is the more senior?
