TERRIBLE TV sitcoms of the 80s and 90s

I can't find the remote control - have just watched Keeping Up Appearances and now Allo Allo is on.

What a crock of shit.

Terribly contrived situations with 'hilarious' consequences.

Patricia Routledge is a great actress but the canned laughter, slobby family and just everything in it is so dire.

And Allo Allo - I don't get it. Who thought it would be funny to have a comedy about german occupation and the French resistance? Made by the BBC? With canned laughter? And Madonna with a big boobies? Were people complete divs back then?

I remember watching some of Colin's Sandwich. At the time there was an awful plotline that came up in that, and some other programmes, where They Hit The Delete Button And Everything Was Lost. Had me shouting at the TV.

Kate and Allie was great, and the Golden Girls, and Roseanne before they won the money. All other US shows were shite.

BalloonSlayer · 03/11/2011 18:15

And doesn't Last of the Summer Wine counts as a terrible TV sitcom of the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s!

Three old men repeating every joke twice accompanied by an almost comatose invisible harmonica player.

I loved Dear John, and I was absolutely mad about Me and My Girl for some strange reason.

Fancied Ronnie Barker in Porridge as well, even though I was about 5yo Grin

Used to love Clarence as well, though the Ronnie crush was well and truly over by then

AbsofCroissant · 03/11/2011 18:16

rathlin - with Patrick Duffy and they had the cousin living in the backgarden?

Itsjustafleshwound · 03/11/2011 18:16

How could I forget Radio Tweeduisand!!! I use to be a big fan of 'Loving' Blush Blush and 'Egoli' when it first started!

ocdgirl · 03/11/2011 18:17

OMG ! just almost spat my coffee out at that monty python, i love them so much. That bird watching one was called watching i think and was very bad but for some reason i used to watch it Blush

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2011 18:17

I remember Robin's Nest. As a child I was intrigued as to whether the man with one arm that did the washing up actually did have one arm.

Itsjustafleshwound · 03/11/2011 18:19

I use to love 'Maude' and 'Mad About You'

AbsofCroissant · 03/11/2011 18:20

we were not allowed, on pain of death, to speak/call/make any noise near my grandmother when loving was on. My mother started getting very concerned when any life advice being doled out by Granny was prefaced with "well, in Loving ..."

ScarlettIsWalking · 03/11/2011 18:24

Dear john was great, the Cosby show contrived but funny. Loved happy days too.

Birds of a feather was utter shite, as was fresh prince, my two dads.

DeeScent · 03/11/2011 18:25

Re spin off movies I remember my mum taking us to the cinema to watch the Steptoe movie and there was a striptease scene in a pub complete with that well-known striptease music.

My poor mum sat there clenching her buttocks with embarassment and whispered to me, "They're just having a competition to see who can take their clothes off the slowest."

I have just googled and the lawyer one with Imelda and the guy whom I now know to be called Richard Lumsden was called 'Is it Legal?' does noone else remember it? I liked After Henry and Waiting for God as well.

KatieMiddIeton · 03/11/2011 18:26

Home James! With the delightful Jim Davidson.

Does anyone remember was it called " watching" with a girl with dark hair and very 80 s fashions?

squeaver · 03/11/2011 18:27

Yes those ditzy Felicity Kendall ones were dire - Solo and The Mistress.

Don't think anyone has mentioned May to December.

Watching also had well-known MN love/hate figure Liza Tarbuck in it (she was the sister).

Also, that awful Paul Nicholas one, what was it?

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2011 18:28

Yes ScarlettIsWalking it had lovely Liza Tarbuck in it too!

alistron1 · 03/11/2011 18:29

Does anyone else remember Dear John? I bloody loved that. Mind you I still love Terry and June, Allo and Allo and most other shows mentioned here!!

I also remember a sitcom set in a funeral parlour with Thora Hird, and a Jim Davidson one called elephant and castle or something.

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2011 18:30

Oh no-is Liza Tarbuck a controversial MN topic? Sorry Confused

squeaver · 03/11/2011 18:30

And I bet none of you will remember this one - The Happy Apple in which Lesley Ash played a secretary called, I think Nancy, in an advertising agency. And the theme tune was:

Nancy is a junior secretary
In an advertising agency
Nancy is just a secretary
dum dum dum dum dum dum

I think it only ran for one series, then she got married so (obviously) had to leave work and be a wife and the plot ended.

squeaver · 03/11/2011 18:31

The girl who was Blossom is now a very funny recurring character in The Big Bang Theory

KatieMiddIeton · 03/11/2011 18:33

It was Second Thoughts *Reality.

Anyone remember On the Up? It was with Dennis Waterman.

Itsjustafleshwound · 03/11/2011 18:33

RIP John Sullivan - he was a genius !

squeaver · 03/11/2011 18:34

Oh oh oh, what about Agony with Maureen Lipman?

God, I could be on this thread for DAYS.
