TERRIBLE TV sitcoms of the 80s and 90s

I can't find the remote control - have just watched Keeping Up Appearances and now Allo Allo is on.

What a crock of shit.

Terribly contrived situations with 'hilarious' consequences.

Patricia Routledge is a great actress but the canned laughter, slobby family and just everything in it is so dire.

And Allo Allo - I don't get it. Who thought it would be funny to have a comedy about german occupation and the French resistance? Made by the BBC? With canned laughter? And Madonna with a big boobies? Were people complete divs back then?

The worst thing was the spin-off films. They seemed so stark and unfunny, maybe because they didn't have the canned laughter.

On the Buses.
Steptoe.

TipOfTheSlung · 03/11/2011 18:04

As someone who can look as these subjectively having never been brainwashed when they were originally on (no tv)
They are pretty much all shit

AbsofCroissant · 03/11/2011 18:04

Steptoe too - really freaked me out.

And the one with all the people working in the shop, and all the "ooh, my pussy is so lonely".

I DON'T WANT TO KNOW

I relaly can't handle tv shows involving unwashed ugly people

WestsAwake · 03/11/2011 18:04

I loved all of these as a kid Grin

My favourite shite 80s sitcom was Dear John. I can still sing the theme tune.

PrincessFiorimonde · 03/11/2011 18:05

The Thin Blue Line

WestsAwake · 03/11/2011 18:07

Also loved Home to Roost, Three Up Two Down, Duty Free, Ever Decreasing Circles, Just Good Friends, Dont Wait Up...to name a few.

Christ they were shite, though Grin

WestsAwake · 03/11/2011 18:07

Oh and Sorry! with little Ronnie whatsisname

PrincessFiorimonde · 03/11/2011 18:08

bunnyspoiler the David Essex series was The River.

It was dreadful.

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2011 18:08

I remember watching Porridge. Was that funny or awful? My Dad thought it was great.

GetOrfMo1Land · 03/11/2011 18:08

Oh GOD 'my pussy is so lonely' - what was that sitcom about a shop with Pauline Folwer in it called again. I HATED it. It is still repeated all the damn time as it is seen as a classic.

I can still sing the theme tune of Dear John as well - that was a very tragic programme, based on the premise of getting dumped.

What was that show with the camp bloke from the Thin Blue Line and Kathy Burke - fucking awful.

Abs - the thing I always liked was all the dubbing in the new SA - there was TJHooker late at night - where Heather Lockyear and William Shatner were talking IsiZulu - and it was REALLY badly dubbed!!

Bop TV ruled - but ours had a very bad reception ..

WestsAwake · 03/11/2011 18:09

Are you being served

WestsAwake · 03/11/2011 18:09

I remember the Kathy Burke one in the 90s...

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 03/11/2011 18:09

My 11yo's favourite TV shows Of All Time are Blackadder and Fawlty Towers. He almost died laughing at Flowery Twats Hmm

GOML when you mentioned everyone being ugly in the 70s I immediately though of Richard Beckinsale, who was beautiful. And then you had to go and diss Rising Damp Angry

Tigerbomb · 03/11/2011 18:09

Some of the American offerings were great:
Laverne and Shirkey
Mork and Mindy
Happy Days
Soap

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 03/11/2011 18:10

Life Begins at Forty

Itsjustafleshwound · 03/11/2011 18:10

'Gimme, Gimme, Gimmee?? - HORRIBLE!!

Though, I did love the Thin Blue Line

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/11/2011 18:10

Dear John was worth it for Ralph Bates who was fab :(

I rather fancied 'aul Dave in the River... Blush

housemum · 03/11/2011 18:11

Are You Being Served was the shop one - Mrs Slocombe was always stroking her pussy, John Inman was camper than Christmas, Young Mr Grace was the old lech looking up the v short skirt of the girl pushing him around in his wheelchair.

LineRunnerBonfireMother · 03/11/2011 18:11

Does anyone remember The Mostress with Felicity Kendal? What the fuck was that all about. Ooooh, Max....

housemum · 03/11/2011 18:11

There are still terrible sitcoms now - anyone for My Family??

LineRunnerBonfireMother · 03/11/2011 18:11

Mostress? Sounds like Israeli bedding.

I mean 'Mistress.'

AbsofCroissant · 03/11/2011 18:12

Ah yes, the dubbing. And then if you wanted it in English for some of the shows you had to tune into Radio 2000 (raaaadio twee duisand) and hope that somehow it managed to match the timing of the TV show so you weren't sat there going "eh?"

and MNet open time - what a completely bizarre and random concept.

My fave dubbing is in Russia, where they have one bloke doing ALL the voices, in the same tone. Very entertaining.

BalloonSlayer · 03/11/2011 18:12

OMG I can't BELIEVE no one has mentioned:

The Cuckoo Waltz (Diane Keen?)

Rings on their Fingers (Was Diane Keen in it again)

The one where Ronnie Barker played an extremely short-sighted man. And that was the joke. For 30 minutes every week.

Has someone said Man About the House. Where the joke for 30 minutes every week was that a MAN was sharing a flat with two women and wasn't shagging either or both of them. So outlandish!!

rathlin · 03/11/2011 18:13

Someone mentioned That's my boy - got there before me!

I liked Kate and Allie, Golden Girls, Different Strokes (v. old!)Cosby Show (and spin off with Lisa Bonet - forget name). There was one that I can't remember the name of (US, Suzanne Sommers, opening credits had family on roller coaster). Think it was about two divorced parents living with their families in one house.
