TERRIBLE TV sitcoms of the 80s and 90s

I can't find the remote control - have just watched Keeping Up Appearances and now Allo Allo is on.

What a crock of shit.

Terribly contrived situations with 'hilarious' consequences.

Patricia Routledge is a great actress but the canned laughter, slobby family and just everything in it is so dire.

And Allo Allo - I don't get it. Who thought it would be funny to have a comedy about german occupation and the French resistance? Made by the BBC? With canned laughter? And Madonna with a big boobies? Were people complete divs back then?

Abs, that's right. Can you remember the name?

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2011 18:34

Is that Blossom squeaver? Sheldon's sort of girlfriend?

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 03/11/2011 18:35

Blimey there were tons of them, weren't there?

At least 50% starring Mollie Sugden.

squeaver · 03/11/2011 18:36

Was On the Up supposed to be what happened to Dennis Waterman after Minder?

Talking of sequels, obviously Porridge WAS amazing but no one talks about Going Straight do they??

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 03/11/2011 18:36

Chance In A Million. I hated that

thenightsky · 03/11/2011 18:36

Was Watching the one with Lisa Tarbuck as the fat sister?

squeaver · 03/11/2011 18:36

Yes that's right, SB

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2011 18:37

I love Mumsnet. I have learnt so much. Can't wait to tell DH about Blossom! Grin

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 03/11/2011 18:37

Adored Family Ties with MJF. At the end of the credits there was a picture of a dog with a frisbee and a voice said

"sit Ubu sit! Good dog"

squeaver · 03/11/2011 18:38

Another one none of you'll remember: David Essex and the girl out of Tutti Fruiti on a canal. The River, I think it was.

squeaver · 03/11/2011 18:39

Where's Aitch? She'd love this thread

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2011 18:39

My friend loved 'The Golden Girls'. I never got it.

ChuffMuffin · 03/11/2011 18:40

Next of Kin with Penelope Keith. It was dire.

TheFoosa · 03/11/2011 18:41

I had a massive crush on him

TheFoosa · 03/11/2011 18:41

Sorry with Ronnie whatshisface

ChuffMuffin · 03/11/2011 18:43

To refresh your minds, this was the plot:

"Maggie and Andrew Prentice have just taken early retirement and intend to spend their final years in their new home in France. However, when their estranged son Graham and his wife (they only refer to her as 'Bootface') die in a car crash, Maggie and Andrew become legal guardians of Graham's three children, 13-year-old Georgia, 11-year-old Philip and seven-year-old Jake. In the first series, Maggie and Andrew officially adopted the children. Maggie especially hates this as she doesn't like children, and the children are somewhat humourless. To make matters worse the children are argumentative and fussy. Georgia is a vegetarian environmentalist, Philip only eats spam and Jake won't eat anything round."

Their parents died in a car accident and Penelope Keith's character hates them. Great premise for a sitcom? Hmm

squeaver · 03/11/2011 18:45

Oh yes, Chuff. That was TERRIBLE.

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 03/11/2011 18:47

I know a RL couple called Penny and Vincent.

Just remembered another 90's one- Game On

housemum · 03/11/2011 18:48

Funeral parlour one was "in loving memory"
Jim Davidson was "up the elephant and round the castle"

LaFilleSurLePont · 03/11/2011 18:52

Does anyone remember a sitcom about an Irish family which was on either BBC 1 or 2 in the late 90s/early 2000s. They all had red hair and were rather stupid. And I think of the sisters was a lollipop lady.

Just remembered that it was called The Fitz. And that they were all named after the Kennedy family.

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2011 18:53

Open All Hours. Every time I see 'Come Outside' I think of Nurse Gladys Emmanuel. (She was in Dr Who recently.)

And he had a stutter. Hi-LAR-ious.

cardibach · 03/11/2011 18:56

There was a really grim one about ex-pats where one character kept going on about the temperature on his balcony. Can't remember it's name!

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2011 18:57

Forgot the stutter squeaver. Sad
