TERRIBLE TV sitcoms of the 80s and 90s

I can't find the remote control - have just watched Keeping Up Appearances and now Allo Allo is on.

What a crock of shit.

Terribly contrived situations with 'hilarious' consequences.

Patricia Routledge is a great actress but the canned laughter, slobby family and just everything in it is so dire.

And Allo Allo - I don't get it. Who thought it would be funny to have a comedy about german occupation and the French resistance? Made by the BBC? With canned laughter? And Madonna with a big boobies? Were people complete divs back then?

I loved Lovejoy too. Was in it in a blink and you miss it major role.

alemci · 05/11/2011 16:52

liked the themetune from lovejoy. Ian Mcshane was a bit mulleted and perma tanned for my liking.

toolly · 05/11/2011 16:56

The two doctors who were father and son played by Tony Britten and Nigel Havers. Utter utter bilge.

AurraSing · 05/11/2011 17:01

Anybody mentioned 'home sweet home' yet? I get a nervous twitch everytime I remember it.

Panzee · 05/11/2011 17:44

AurraSing Do you mean No Place Like Home?

AurraSing · 05/11/2011 19:18

Ah, you might be right, panzee. I daren't google, I might see a clip [shudder]. Grin

alemci · 05/11/2011 19:27

definitely no place like home. just googled and didn't have to watch any clips. A young martin clunes was in it.

vogonmothership · 05/11/2011 19:46

Triangle anyone?
Set on a North Sea ferry with the Dynasty the actress with the funny lips who is a bit like fenella fielding?

Panzee · 05/11/2011 19:47

I found the theme music with the picture falling down was particularly hilarious.

Lilymaid · 05/11/2011 20:00

Has anyone mentioned A Very Peculiar Practice with Peter Davison? Definitely not terrible.
And, of course, the original Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin.

I'm not feeling strong enough to click on the link. Was there a traffic warden in it (a comedy gold job, if ever there was one)

alemci · 05/11/2011 20:42

I loved Hi de Hi with Peggy.

LordOfTheFlies · 05/11/2011 22:26

Tony Slattery - Just a Gigalo? Basically he worked as a bumbling male escort (yeah ,right!) who fancied the manager/owner of the local bistro.

City Lights- set in Glasgow. Bank clerk-cum-writer who lived with his mother ( but funny in places)

I remember Doctors' Daughters- or at least, the theme tune to it.

bitsnbobs · 06/11/2011 19:50

I used to love Watching with Liza Tarbuck on, and Only When I Laugh with James "Grandpa in My Pocket" Bowlem. I also liked The Upper Hand. Also programme that was on in the morning before school about two american women, think it was Kate and Allie, oh and Mork and Mindy - Nanoo Nanoo Grin

GetOrf · 06/11/2011 19:53

I have never heard of Shine on Harvey Moon - just googled it and it rings no bells at all.

Perhaps they showed something something else in the south west on TSW (perhaps 'Table Skittles at the Old Bull') when the rest of the country watched that.

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/11/2011 19:55

I really went off Mork and Mindy when they had their creepy baby.
He was a grown man who used to sit in a nappy as babies from Morks planet were born backwards.
It was just wrong.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 07/11/2011 10:01

Itchy, what on earth is the one with the lion glove puppet? Confused Grin

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 07/11/2011 10:34

Lion glove puppet. Hmmmm. I think the sit of the com was that they had teenage daughters or summat. Shall Google...

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 07/11/2011 10:37

Keep it in the Family

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 07/11/2011 11:43

Jesus H. I know telly was weird in the old days but I hadn't expected that! Grin

cambridgeferret · 07/11/2011 13:54

No-one's mentioned Dead ernest yet - Andrew Sachs scraping the bottom of the comedy barrel, was a person who died (and shouldn't have), went to heaven but couldn't come back because they'd taken his kidneys - real crap.

How about Selwyn Froggett?
Also young at heart? 2 pensioners with a young couple next door. And that was the comedy.

agedknees · 07/11/2011 17:12

Doctor in the House (was the same actor who played in Mind your Language).

The Lovers with Richard Beckinsdale and the woman who was in Man about the house.

These might be late 60's though.

TwoIfBySea · 07/11/2011 17:41

Never mind the sitcoms, Talc and LineRunner's embarrassing lyrics heard in front of relatives surely deserves a thread of their own. So funny!

alemci · 07/11/2011 21:10

I mentioned Selwyn Frogatt earlier.

remember 'so haunt me' with the Jewish grandmother

there was one really really ghastly comedy that got axed very quickly on ITV called 'Lovely Couple'.

even as an 11 year old I could tell it was absolute rubbish. did I imagine it.
