Yes, two servings of bread in a meal! You would never guess that the US Dept of Agriculture was responsible for school meals would you Grin

That file full of "guidelines" was just bonkers. No relationship to real food at all.

And the dinnerladies - awful, so depressing to see them so smug when the kids chose the shitty processed pizza. How can they possibly think that's a better meal for those children?

Jamie Oliver got an Emmy for this series in the US, there's a clip of him chopping a courgette with it on his website...

JulesJules · 15/09/2010 13:38

Here's the bit with the Emmy

both, i thought. one imagines that they have been told over and over that the food they are giving is good stuff, and it must be hard to give that up. thing is, those women look like really competent cooks, unlike the dinner ladies in the UK, so i bet he'll bring them round.

Do they look like competent cooks though, I mean when they saw the real chicken they shuddered.

Seemed more interested in their matchy matchy slacks n baseball hats and the importance of wearing plastic gloves.

Laura from "The Dept" is just...sinister Grin

JulesJules · 15/09/2010 14:19

Haha, x-posts Euphemia!

Aitch · 15/09/2010 15:08

they can make bread, that makes them competent in my eyes... Grin i think that they have just become divorced from good food, and it shouldn't be too hard to get them on side. they seem like decent god-fearing women (alice aside, who is like a brilliant evil gnome).

juneybean · 15/09/2010 15:52

Oh god don't call them dinnerladies, did you see their faces when Jamie called them that haha

nickstermum · 15/09/2010 17:44

ladies wot lunch

Shuddered! hilarious! Cannot wait for the series. FAB that he won an emmy for it - and even more FAB that he deemed it important enough to chop his courgette with ha ha Grin

cherylvole · 15/09/2010 17:44

what is wrong witih dinner ladies

Aitch · 15/09/2010 17:46

i don't think it's a term used in the states, they took offence when he said it, and wanted to be called cooks. fair enough, so do some cooking, ladies...

cherylvole · 15/09/2010 17:47

i lol at the way he called it Hunnington

nickstermum · 15/09/2010 18:19

fsmail · 15/09/2010 22:22

Just watched the Big School Lottery after Jamie's revolution in the UK and what did the kids in the grammer school have for lunch, chips, pizza, no veg, no fruit and a cake. The kid got home and his mother had a cake waiting for him.

So much for us being better than the Americans! Personally I would say for every fried meal you eat, you run three miles, that would get the weight off them quicker than a change to the diet but Jamie does not sell exercise books. Watch X-weighted, the Canadian programme which is really excellent at getting families to live a healthier life by teaching them how to eat healthily and exercise in combination.

The big family will not lose weight by changing their diet alone. Agree that the schools should be leading healthy eating but from what I have seen this is not possible based on their understanding of good nutrition.

TwoIfBySea · 16/09/2010 23:12

He should have taken his dinnerlady friend Nora with him, she'd have shut Alice up. Alice and the DJ were aggressively ignorant, I'd be surprised if they change attitude no matter what.

nickstermum · 20/09/2010 20:48

Looking forward to tonights installment of fried crap Jamie!

LauraNorder · 20/09/2010 20:51

Lol Two, yes bring Nora back, you're right she would have been bloody marvellous!!
