Anyone watching? I hear he gets a really tough time Sad

OP posts:
CatIsSleepy · 14/09/2010 11:11

poor old jamie, he's got tough times ahead with this lot

expat, i don't think there is a problem with families or schools in India or Pakistan cooking rubbish for their kids, it's a whole different kind of problem. He can't solve world poverty... He said himself at one point that kids in South African townships eat better food than these American kids are getting ie real food not processed.
A week is bugger-all time to sort that school out though, really. he's doomed!

mousymouse · 14/09/2010 12:00

I dont really see a problem with pizza for breakfast.
OK, it
s not traditional breakfast stuff, but it has a lot going for it e.g. carbs, veg, protein. not the worst start of the day imo.

Have to say i loved this last night, and the thought of my DS getting pizza and nuggets at school for lunch is abhorrent!

Poor Jamie, means well, good intentions, do you reckon he is gonna conquer them!??! doubtful but cant wait to watch! Jesus..... how can you feed your kids that much CRAP and expect them to be healthy!??!

Fried fried fried........ Holy shit!!!
Its not small quantities either - the sizes of those kids portions were humungous... they dont stand a chance do they?!

Would love to know what the americans think to the programme!
I thought it was awesome!!

nickstermum · 14/09/2010 12:37

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/09/2010 13:02

i shudder at hotdogs in general but a corn dog Shock

corndog recipe

TheMoonOnAStick · 14/09/2010 13:25

Thanks Blondes just looked at your link. Blimey charlie...if you scroll down there is even such a thing as a 'corndog casserole'Confused.

expatinscotland · 14/09/2010 13:37

So all 350m+ people in teh US are oinkers who eat shite and don't cook.

Because that's the generalisation here.

The same one he made about British people in a couple of series that really put me off him, tbh.

My kids won't even eat breakfast (well, the younger one does).

I didn't have pizza for break today - I had a slice of wholegrain bread from the bread machine spread with sundried tom pesto I made myself and a bean burger from Tesco.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 14/09/2010 13:40

It looks nothing like a casserole either - more like a cross between a corndog torilla and a corndog toad in the hole. To my mind a casserole is meat and/or veg/pulses, cooked slowly in stock/gravy in the oven - not something like a pasta bake.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/09/2010 13:54

moon, dont you fancy corn dog muffins? Grin

or even salad?

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 14/09/2010 14:02

Not forgetting the one where you cook the corndogs, split them lengthways, remove the dog, mash with cooked potato, scoop back into the batter shell, top with grated cheese and then grill! My arteries are clanging shut just thinking about that one!

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/09/2010 14:05

thats right, just like a jacket potato Grin

Yes but if there are 350m americans and only 650k have signed up that's what - 0.2% of people.
Not exactly lifechanging is it?

What happened after St Jamie went to Downing Street - has his healthy eating school dinners programme been rolled out across any LEAS does anyone know?

I completely agree iwth everything he's saying BUT just wonder whether anyone's actually doing anything.

fsmail · 14/09/2010 22:14

I am afraid he annoys me and really got on my wick when he patronisingly said on daytime TV that he was travelling Cattle Class and therefore he was the same as everybody else.

The food was shocking and particular the pizza for breakfast and the deep fat fryer family but then he started going on about getting the family round the table and community. At no point in that programme did it ever indicate that there was no community spirit or that families did not sit around the table. That was a load of old baloney. He is there to make them eat healthier. Be honest Jamie. Plus as the Head said this is TV. There were lots of skinny children running around the playground.

How would we take to an American coming over to the UK and telling us how to eat when a lot of people eat junk there? It is exactly the same for the Americans and the UK inhabitants also have problems with obesity and these people will know that.

nickstermum · 14/09/2010 22:44

So he was generalising a little " welcome to school food in america" playing devils advocate, how many of those 350+ million americans are suffering from obesity? Be interesting to find out. All i know when i have been to various different restaurants, the portions are huge! Loved it!!

Deep fried sausage, try deep fried burger in our local chippy - ~YUM!!

Have to say i loved the potato pearls! Urgh Holey manoley, what the hell do they put in the turds on sticks?!

Corn dogs for me would be a friday night, pissed up 2am treat from the local kebab shop if i was ever so lucky to go out anymore!

We went on holiday to Philadelphia this Summer and were appalled by the size of the portions in restaurants. It was completely the norm to take left over food home in boxes. I know it's rude but we often took photos of our meals to remind us! We've one picture of DD with her child's size pizza which was bigger and sloppier than any full sized adult pizza over here.

If only Jamie manages to get portion sizes down that would be a fine start.

minipie · 15/09/2010 10:42

I watched this. I agree with what he's trying to do but thought he didn't go about it particularly well.

He started by telling them they were the unhealthiest town in America. Now, it may be true, but attacking people is the quickest way to get their hackles up and get them defending themselves and not receptive to change.

I think he could have done a lot better by praising the benefits of healthy food, focusing on the taste, the nutrients, support for the American farming industry, that cooking is fun, etc. He should have presented it as "give this a try and see if you like and if see if you feel better in a week" rather than "you're all killing yourselves, let me show you how to do it better".

But of course the more combative approach makes better TV Hmm

Aitch · 15/09/2010 11:00

well of course it does, and they are making a tv show so of course he's not going to go about it in a boring manner. no need for a Hmm, surely, it's a no-brainer.

bonkers restrictions as well, two breads per meal?

SexyDomesticatedDad · 15/09/2010 11:36

Jamie is a trained chef not just a cook. I think he genuinely has the right idea that we should all improve our diets and relationship with food. I cant say I like all his manerisms and style (bro, girls etc) but at least he's doing something about it! Maybe there is self interest there (says he who has most of his books) - but he set up 15 and other organisations like that to help some kids that have dropped off the radar screen of society.

The stuff in the programme was just Shock - the appalling amount of waste, the guidelines that just seem totally bizarre etc etc etc.

I think he is guilty possibly of trying to do too much - is he there to kick off the revolution or should he continue to see things through? Not sure yet we've had the revolution completely in the UK. There's no doubt about it we are what we eat.

nickstermum · 15/09/2010 11:44

The bro, man thing seems to just be his way. Hes been like that in all his progs. People seem to buy into his downto earth manner. Have to say dont forget things like this for him are non profit making, he makes his money off his books. Fifteen is a charity. Jamies Kitchen in WV i would suspect is non profit considering they are offering cooking service for free - wish he would do that were i live!!

The people in the school have a right to be defensive, they agreed to a TV programme, and they have a right to be embarrassed when it gets aired - I certainly would be.
Defence often comes from embarrassment Shock

Looking forward to the next installment, and in the meantime will abstain from my usual amount of chocolate in support! Grin
