When do teenagers usually become hard as mine is still so lovely at 15?!

I'm probably tempting fate here but I have a 15 year old son who has honestly never given me a bit of bother. He is kind, caring, thoughtful, respectful, works hard at school and shows a genuine interest in how I am and how my day has been etc. He often makes the family dinner and treats his younger siblings kindly.

I wonder if I have just been lucky or if the worst has yet to come. I also have 2 younger so definitely know I am no where near out the woods!

Fifteen and three quarters....

TruffleSlinky · 23/09/2026 21:26

I have lovely teens too OP! They're now 16, 18 and 20 (one girl and two boys) so I'm hoping I've made it through to the other side.

Yawyaw · 23/09/2026 21:30

My three were not too bad ,cannot remember any big dramas . They are late 20s early 30s so maybe I have forgotten 🤦‍♀️

MabelMarple · 23/09/2026 21:32

Mine are late 20s.
They were never hard as teenagers, perfectly lovely. As four year olds however, the hardest ever.

Waitingfordoggo · 23/09/2026 21:33

Mine were lovely too. They are 18 and 21 now and I really enjoyed their teen years for the most part.

There was never any rebellion, shouting, rudeness or door-slamming. Some grumpiness, yes, and lots of laziness, but nothing awful. DD had some MH problems and an ED in her teens, which was very sad and worrying, and we went through a phase where communication was difficult between me and her (she was ok with DH!) I think it was her teenage hormones going head-to-head with my perimenopausal hormones, and the fact that DD and I are incredibly alike in character that made us clash a bit. But it wasn’t arguments or shouting; more both of us being over sensitive and misunderstanding each other.

But overall, I enjoyed the teen years and felt I did some of my best parenting in that stage; certainly I found it less tiring than the toddler/pre-school years.

Bunnyofhope · 23/09/2026 21:33

Mine was shocking. Started age about 10 and he is just about tolerable now aged 31. Good luck to you!

Lindy2 · 23/09/2026 21:35

I have one lovely teen and one that literally makes me want to tear my hair out and scream.

Celebrate your good luck with your lovely 15 year old and fingers crossed you get equally lucky with the others.

Personality and genes play a bit part in my opinion.

concertinacornflake · 23/09/2026 21:38

Some of them stay lovely right through.

Greentea4 · 23/09/2026 21:39

My two boys are in the thirties now.
Both lovely as teenagers. Used to bring their friends back. Nothing like a group of polite teenage boys eating toast and hanging out. Lovely times..

His friends all seem equally as lovely 💕, but guess you can never tell!

I’ve had 3 teens and none became horrible, and wouldn’t have dared speak to me like I see some kids speak to their parents. My middle son was an absolute dream. He is 22 now. DD is not horrible but is sensitive, but her days of having a tantrum are long over and if she was upset about something, she’s go to her room. They don’t all turn into horrible teens, you might get away with it.

MrJumpyLegs · 23/09/2026 21:41

I’ve got two late teens. They are and always have been adorable. I’m still waiting and really hope it’ll stay like this

seahorsessky · 23/09/2026 21:41

Not all do. Mic of nature, parenting, and the people they hang round with (as in friends and others they're forced to be with).
Of course, my mum said it's all parenting and thanks to her that her daughters were always nice :)

mumumental · 23/09/2026 21:42

One of my ds’s was similar, but not the other one. You can’t tell in advance.

TheMasterplan23 · 23/09/2026 21:43

My DS is 16 and I honestly adore the bones of him. He is so kind and caring and protective of me and his sisters. He’s a joy to be around 😊
He’s 6ft 3 now but still my baby (much to his sisters amusement)

I really hope the world as it is now doesn’t change him and make him angry and too tough. I strongly believe that the best thing I ever taught him was to respect women.

Yello24 · 23/09/2026 21:46

Have three now in their 20s and they were an absolute pleasure as teenagers and still are. I love teenagers. The boys especially can just be so adorable. Funny and kind and silly.

MUCH easier than when they were tiny.

FortyFacedFuckers · 23/09/2026 21:53

My son is 21 and has never not been lovely!

NigellaWannabe1 · 23/09/2026 21:55

My kids are at their nicest and easiest now as teenagers! I don’t think it’s uncommon, from what i hear.

Sunnybeachday · 23/09/2026 21:57

This is reassuring. My daughter is 13 and has always been a contented child and an absolute doddle. I imagined that the worst was very much yet to come, but maybe it isn’t….

PoppopPopcorn · 23/09/2026 22:00

I have 3 aged 17-22 none were/are bad. Still some time but until now have not given me much bother. I think some must be down to parenting (setting boundaries, respect, allowing them to become independent etc) however theres lots of other influences eg freinds, genetics, personality, life circumstances.
My mum had 3 dc 1 was a nightmare, one was somewhere in between and one was ok. You just never know. I always felt that you do what you can with what you've got to bring up well rounded, independent individuals and hope for the best.

Unmotivatedteen · 23/09/2026 22:01

DS17 has been bloody awful since about 12, no sign yet of him coming out the the other end - it honestly has nearly broken me.

DD14.5 is still adorable in the main

arethereanyleftatall · 23/09/2026 22:01

Like the poster above, I have one 16 year old who has been the loveliest person ever forever. I dont have to do anything at all to parent her really - she gets on with her homework, is always pleasant, helps out with housework without being asked etc She is so empathetic that I - touch wood - don’t think she’d put me through how my eldest was again even if she wanted to! My other dd is now 18 and her difficult journey - for both of us really - started around 13. Now diagnosed with adhd and so the extremeemotions now make sense. I can now recognise that for me, it was fuck all to do with how I parented really. Dd1 was always going to make her own way! Can I add that dd1 is also awesome, but she has been all consuming for about 5 years.

JaffaCakess · 23/09/2026 22:08

Mine are lovely too, 15 14 and 12, really good kids, but I do know not all teens are and some parents really have awful tear away teens, going off the rails in gangs, drinking, smoking, running away, etc mine aren’t “easy” as they have Sen but they are good kids

Echobelly · 23/09/2026 22:15

They don't necessarily become horrid at all. IME, generally if they are nice until 16 they remain so, though I have a few friends who said they went off the rails at 16, so it can still change. On the whole it seems like 12-16 is often the worst bit if there are issues. Our 18yo is generally lovely and very mature. There's been the odd emotional outburst, but more sadness than anger or oppositional behaviour.

DS is 15 so I'm hoping our luck holds... my siblings and I were 'nice' teenagers, but my husband says he was a bloody nightmare!
