I have:

  • Woken DS up "too fast" to unload the dishwasher when I got home from work at 7pm.
  • Locked down DD's phone after 3 hours of asking her to put away the vast array of dirty crockery, nail art supplies and dirty socks decorating the sofa.
  • Booked a holiday in accommodation without a swimming pool.
  • Arranged to take DS and DD on a work trip abroad with me.
  • Refused to exclude DD from said work trip at DS's request.

How have you ruined your teenager's summer?

I have mentioned that his terrible mock exam results are probably as he sees his girlfriend multiple times per week so I think he should either study more and see her less or give up on the university idea and get a full time job instead.

I have made lunch at a time I happened to be free in my very busy schedule rather than wait for the exact time he might have decided he was hungry but I would be back at work by then.

Booked a fabulous holiday in Crete but it's not all inclusive

Rituelec · 22/07/2026 09:55

Couldn't drop them in town at 10am because I was working.

Didn't answer my phone immediately so they could ask me if they can have £5

Woke them up hoovering at 11am

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 22/07/2026 09:59

Didn’t remember to buy the branded cheese snacks she wanted

the last lot were thrown in the bin in anger by her at some other terrible (to her) act

Hamela · 22/07/2026 10:05

Played normal volume music downstairs. At 1pm. They stomped downstairs like an angry grandpa just to turn it down 😂

Woke them on time to catch a bus to see friends, as they had requested me to the day before. Somehow it was wrong to actually do it as asked though.

Expected them to grill their own burgers when friends came over. Apparently "EvEn biRdS feed their babies longer than you do mother"...😂

Bought Scrabble to occupy us on a short break. May as well have bought a bag of dog shits 😂

I love this thread 😂😂😂

minipie · 22/07/2026 10:19

Expected them to go to various courses and activities that they had wanted to do at the time of booking.

BePoisedPlumUser · 22/07/2026 10:20

I breathed

Rothburypixie · 22/07/2026 10:22

Told him to change his bedsheets, I know awful, I’ll call SS on myself

Instructions · 22/07/2026 10:25

Unreasonably, cruelly and sadistically said he will have to make the 15 minute bus journey to Nationwide to pay the cash he has been given by family members into his current account and not accounted for the fact that the branch closes at 4pm which means he will have to get up before 3pm to do so. I am horrible and don't care about him at all.

Shrieked joyfully in surprise in the Duty Free shop at Luton Airport when dd2 called to say that she had, against all expectations, passed her IB.

This ruined dd1’s summer as she was with me & god I’m sooooo embarrassing.

It also ruined dd2’s summer as a) god I’m sooooo embarrassing even if she was 200 miles away & b) how dare I be surprised, she was always going to pass even if she’s not a swotty git like dd1.

This ruined dd1’s summer some more as it’s obviously my fault dd2 called her a swotty git.

SirChenjins · 22/07/2026 10:53

Asked him to finish painting the fence that is now 2 different colours and to clean out his wardrobe and chest of drawers before he leaves home after the summer. I strongly suspect he has no intention of doing either because he is far too busy doing Important Things like playing football, going for days out with his friends and shagging his girlfriend.

user9764325677 · 22/07/2026 10:55

Taken them to Spain, where they asked to go.

Xiaoxiong · 22/07/2026 10:55

Asked DS2 to walk the dog as I'm working.
Asked DS1 to make his own breakfast as I'm working.
Told them to take the bus to town rather than them getting a lift from me, as I'm working.

Working at all is apparently a massive imposition on their lives! @Rituelec I feel your pain.

NotDarkGothicMama · 22/07/2026 10:59

Gosh, we're all pros at ruining teen summers.

@minipie reminded me of how I booked DD in to work at the stables, as requested by her the week before. This meant she had to get up early and ruined her plan of staying in her pyjamas and binge-watching police dramas on Netflix all day.

@SirChenjins my DS has been similarly inconvenienced by me buying him a new chest of drawers, which I have asked him to assemble. He is far too busy playing Clash Royale and sleeping to have time for that sort of thing.

He's also cross with me because I said I would take him to Currys to collect the toaster he ordered for himself (apparently the cats have licked the toaster in the kitchen so he can't use that one Hmm), then reneged on my "promise" when he disclosed that it wasn't the Currys down the road, but the one in a town a 30-minute drive away. Delivery would have been £2.99, which he couldn't possibly be expected to pay.

My my own (now adult) dc but my stepdaughter (who was 18 at the time)

She asked me for my house key (we where in a shop) and I ruined her whole life by going in my bag to give it to her (she laid on the floor screaming at me)

Another time, she got right in my face and 'your soooo fucking embarrassing' because I passed her my bank card AND boots card to pay for tat SHE wanted in boots

I gave up and told her dad he could sort it out

My own dd (now almost 30) was about 14 and I was the world's worst mother for buying a pair of trainers for myself

The same ones she'd turned her nose up at as they where 'very fucking granny' in the shop, but she then decided she DID like them after all and stole them to use for pe at school

She destroyed them and handed them back to me,6 months later with the sole hanging off and the toe box missing

All my fault for not buying them for her in the first

Another time I ruined ds's whole life by not buying eggs

He was standing next to me when we passed the egg aisle in tesco and I asked if he wanted some,he said 'no' so we carried on walking

Huge hissy fit for not buying the eggs he said he didn't want and would have gone to waste

All my fault for not supporting his body building diet

Kids...

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 22/07/2026 11:11

Booked a holiday with very early morning flights (no choice on flight time)

Didn't order Gousto meals with a high enough protein content

Bought a brand new automatic car having previously ever owning second hand manual cars which has triggered DS1 to be furious that we did not advise him well enough on his own car purchase 6 months ago and he would have gone for PCP option and got an automatic if only he'd known.

LarkspurLane · 22/07/2026 11:12

Reminded DS that he was working on Saturday.
Asked if he had fixed the puncture on his bike that I only found out by chance that he had, that he needs for said work on Saturday.

Asked other DS how he was.

I’m surprised that “gone out wearing clothes” hasn’t featured yet. As all clothes worn by mums are embarrassing, apparently.

VestPantsandSocks · 22/07/2026 11:17

Solidarity - I thought I was alone 😉

TheBlueKoala · 22/07/2026 11:23

I told mine to brush their teeth this morning. Told one of them he had to read a real book this summer (no manga doesn't count). One book, 250 pages- school has asked them to read it) and I have now ruined his summer holidays...

Edited

Just go out naked/ in bikini next time and they will never say that again.

Placestogo · 22/07/2026 11:26

Offered a home cooked meal - it did not contain meat… how dare i ask them to eat vegetables and eggs?!!!
