What have you done to ruin your teenager's summer so far?

I have:

  • Woken DS up "too fast" to unload the dishwasher when I got home from work at 7pm.
  • Locked down DD's phone after 3 hours of asking her to put away the vast array of dirty crockery, nail art supplies and dirty socks decorating the sofa.
  • Booked a holiday in accommodation without a swimming pool.
  • Arranged to take DS and DD on a work trip abroad with me.
  • Refused to exclude DD from said work trip at DS's request.

How have you ruined your teenager's summer?

Tidied the fridge and now they can’t find anything.

facethesunshine · 22/07/2026 21:17

Walked too slowly due a torn meniscus and we might miss an event that I paid for. Apparently they don’t like anyone to slow them down!

Dymaxion · 22/07/2026 21:23

Booked holiday accommodation that was a flat , this massively curtailed DD's stropping abilities because she was used to stairs , she didn't feel stomping down a corridor had the same gravitas.

SometimesTheIntrusiveThoughtsWin · 22/07/2026 21:35

Suggested to DS1 if was struggling to get up on time for hiking before the weather got hot he could go to bed earlier. Apparently it doesn’t work like that. Who knew?

Also suggested to DS2 that he could spend an evening with his family whilst on holiday rather than spending it in his room.

I haven’t dared suggest the monopoly I’ve packed yet…. Feels unwise.

Agreed to 17 yr old DD having 8 friends over for a day-into-evening bbq.

She then decided a few days before that, actually, she wanted a ‘proper party’ with about 50 randoms people, going on until at least midnight in my garden. It was a ‘no’.

I am now a complete killjoy who has ruined her summer.

Hmm, on one hand she'll feel like the coolest teenager in town for an hour or two.

On the other hand, the 50 randoms will multiply into 200 randoms and trash the house, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

It's a tough one.

I would love to know what my parents would have complained about me on this thread!
They expected me to work as much as possible in my spare time (harder for kids these days I know) study/revise, keep the house reasonably clean. If I spoke to them rudely like some of these replies, I would have been in big trouble, and they sadly would not have entertained most of these requests I am reading.
Glad that parents are more loving and relaxed now, but some of these replies sound really entitled.

I don't see m/any posters entertaining many of the teenage requests - that's literally the point of the thread.

I know this thread is meant to be lighthearted, but I’m shocked at these replies.

My mother wouldn’t have tolerated this from me, and my own 2 DDs never behaved like this either. They’re both in their 30s now, and we have always had a fantastic relationship.

Oh come on, are you telling me they never had a single teenage Kevin and Perry moment?!
I’m in my 50s and remember being mortified when I was out on a date at 17 and came out of a pub and my mum walked past. I literally grabbed the lads hand and dragged him in the opposite direction for fear she would stop and talk to us 😆

NameChangeScot · 23/07/2026 10:05

Solidarity to you all. Week 4 of the holidays here, it's been great so long as I don't ask ds15 to do anything, am available for lifts in an instant, food of his liking constantly available and keep his bank account topped up.

In all seriousness though, he's a good kid, I remember what it's like to a teenager and what I was doing at 15!

violetcuriosity · 23/07/2026 10:22

She sat on her £100 Ted baker glasses and broke them despite me telling her every day to stop leaving them on her bed. I said don’t worry it’s an accident but if they can’t fix them you’ll need to get the free frames until your next eye test. Apparently that’s unfair.

This means they were doing things without you knowing and being rude behind your back. Every teenager has their moments.

As sure as night follows day, there are always killjoys on lighthearted threads that feel the need to try and bring the mood down with the “in my day I would never…” comments🙄

I've ruined DS's summer by sending him to a school where they study To Kill a Mockingbird for GCSE English rather than something interesting. He now has to read the world's most boring book (his words) over the holiday instead of his manga/anime/comic book crap, and this is totally my fault for not looking at the syllabus 5 years ago. If anyone knows of a school where they study manga for English Lit, please let him know!

To be fair, he does have a point about that book!

Not my child, but a teen at work

Shed made plans for a Monday but it was on the schedule that she was to work that day but she had the Tuesday off (shift work)

She rang in with 'hey chickas!I've got plans for Monday but will come in for the same hours on Tuesday!'

Her whole life was ruined when the manager told her that no she was down for Monday and she would be expected to come in on the Monday or get a warning as a no show (there was no way she could call in sick)

Her whole life was ruined, work where being sooooooo unreasonable and didn't they know she had a life?

She has grown up a tiny bit since but the entitlement was hilarious-her face was a picture when she went round whinging and we all backed work up

Not a teenage but my 11 year old had to have his appendix out on the first week of holidays. This was last week and now he can't do anything for 6 weeks so all of the school holidays. Plus he is going to year 7 in September so a lovely leaving primary school gift!

It’s very common for children to have their appendix out on the transition to secondary school. Your DS is lucky - I missed the first 6 weeks of grammar school, was expected to copy up all the work I had missed and had to have a private tutor for algebra as the maths teacher said she didn’t know how I would catch up!

Rocknrollstar · 23/07/2026 11:05

My children were Gen X and definitely did a few things behind my back but never behaved like the stories I am reading here. I think this is the best ever thread on Mumsnet and my sympathies go out to you all.

Indeed. My mum was a teen in the 50s and she admits herself she was an absolute menace. Constantly turfed out the classroom to stand outside the door, would climb out of her bedroom window to land on the outside loo roof…teenagers have played up and acted out forever. It’s not some new generation thing.

That’s because we were kicked out after breakfast and weren’t allowed back until dark so we weren’t actually at home to complain about food/dishwasher duties/tidying our rooms 😂

Tickingcrocodile · 23/07/2026 11:21

I spoke in public on more than one occasion. Apparently I am too embarassing to be allowed to speak in front of others.

At home, so far, they have been pretty good though. They are usually ok on holiday too as it doesn't seem to matter how "cringe" I am when they are away from anyone who may know them.

WildCats24 · 23/07/2026 11:37

I’m GenX and was a moody little bitch, so this is nothing new. My Boomer parents too—apparently my dad smoked cigarettes in the family bathroom and flushed the evidence, but the cigarette butts didn’t go down, unbeknownst to him. Teenagers gonna teenage.

NotDarkGothicMama · 23/07/2026 12:33

I was a horrible teenager so am definitely getting my comeuppance.

I'm allowed to make polite conversation with the DC's friends, but only in unavoidable circumstances like when I'm giving them a lift. I am absolutely not allowed to have the radio on or play music in earshot of any other living being. All music must cease before I get home in case the neighbours hear while I'm parking up.

I've ruined DD's day by making her get the HPV vaccine, which she's already refused twice at school. Even the offer of Starbucks afterwards didn't stop the crying, refusal to get out of the car and wails that I don't understand/care. I'm afraid my sympathy has been exhausted and she's now sitting in the clinic waiting room, playing on her phone and throwing me the odd scowl.

Reading these, I’m torn between being glad I don’t have a typical teen and worrying that I’m not doing enough to piss her off. My parenting motto has always been if you’re not pissing them off at least once a week, you’re doing it wrong. 😃

Refused to spend £350 on a new bike after he’s trashed three in a row 🙄

Good Grief! Did you all behave like this with your parents when you were your kids age?! I would imagine not…

I absolutely did. My mother reminds me of it often.
