Would you let your 14yr old wear thongs?

I don’t want to, but I noticed last week when she was getting out of the car that when she’s wearing leggings, she is wearing her knickers wedged up her bum so as not to have a VPL, and it looks ridiculous as you can see the fabric bunched up at the top of her bum. She hasn’t asked for thongs but I’d rather she be comfortable, it can’t be comfy walking around with your knickers wedged up your bum all day! There’s no point telling her not to do it as she’d just put it back as soon as she was able to. Teenagers 🙄

On the one hand I’m like, “Thongs at 14?? No way!”
But on the other hand… it’s just knickers and no-one should be seeing them so it shouldn’t matter.
But still, 14 😬

For some of us thongs are really comfy. I’ve worn them since I first discovered them. If they are comfy for her, why not? As you say yourself, no one is going to see them, whereas bunched up knicker fabric sounds unsightly as well as seriously uncomfortable!

Jollyjoy · 15/11/2025 22:59

I agree with others saying she is at an age where she can form her own preferences, but I understand the discomfort because - you can see thongs! Why is everyone saying no one will see them?!

ninjahamster · 15/11/2025 22:59

My girls did (in their twenties now). They just find them really comfortable.

ExperiencedTeacher · 15/11/2025 23:05

I must be incredibly vulgar. I’ve only worn thongs since I was about that age because (shock horror) I find them more comfortable than big knickers.

Why are thongs any more visible than any other type of underwear?

LadyHexham · 15/11/2025 23:09

Never wanted to wear a thong, don't have a problem with those who do.... But don't they get a bit poo-ey?

NewAsics · 15/11/2025 23:10

My girls were about this age when they switched to thongs.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 15/11/2025 23:14

Part of me thinks 'No', but if she's manufacturing them regardless then she might as well have the real ones and look less obvious.

They are not more visible, but you can see their outline at the top of the bum, just like you can see vpl on bigger pants. People are talking as if thongs are invisible and hidden but I don’t think they are. Maybe I look at bums too much.

whyaretheylikethis · 15/11/2025 23:17

Mumsnet never fails to amaze me with some comments.

honestly OP. Chuck a pack of thongs in next time you go to the shops. It’s really not a big deal like some of the posters are claiming. She obviously is self conscious of VPL in leggings.

all this talk of thongs being ‘vulgar’ & being a parent not a friend Confused Honestly, some parents need to get a grip.

Yes.. all of us who wear thongs wear them right in our bum holes and they get really shitty.

Yeah, mine did. She bought them herself on a shopping trip with friends.

Same here. I remember doing the same when I was that age too.

let's start a chat about under 16s in thongs 😕

19lottie82 · 15/11/2025 23:39

Why would you stop her? What do you think is going to happen? Serious question.

My two did, the got them on a shopping day with friends. It never really bothered me thinking back

Obeseandashamed · 15/11/2025 23:57

TMI but thongs hurt my vagina. I’ve tried opting for a bigger size in case that was the issue but that didn’t help. I also tried wearing them when I was a U.K size 6 and not obese. It made no difference, I just found them really uncomfortable. Maybe ask your daughter but be mindful as I was joking with a gynae friend a while back about granny knickers and she said thongs not only often cause irritation but make you more prone to thrush.

It’s not that I think anything is going to happen exactly, I just equate them with being more ‘grown up’ underwear. Daft thinking I know, it’s just the way I was brought up. My mum was disapproving when I bought tanga style knickers on a shopping trip, I think I was about 13 🤣 I can’t really articulate why I don’t feel comfortable with it, logically I know it’s just a style of knickers 🤷🏼‍♀️

She’s already wearing her ordinary knickers wedged up in her bum crack so I don’t really see the difference.

Yes, dd started wearing thongs around that age, because of vpl in leggings. DP delegated knicker sorting from the laundry pile to me at that point, like a victorian lady who faints at the sight of a bare ankle 😅

tragichero · 16/11/2025 00:07

Nobody is going to be seeing my dd's knickers other than family members and close friends, so I don't think it matters from an "appropriacy' point of view!

So if she felt they would be more comfortable, it wouldn't enter my head to try to stop her!

But she is old enough to choose her own knickers. If she wants some new ones she either buys them using her own money when out with friends, or I always ask if she needs anything when we go shopping together and then she picks them and I just pay for them. I think she's asked my mom to order her some on Amazon a couple of times too.

But the choice of style is her own, and nobody else's business!

Chinsupmeloves · 16/11/2025 00:09

It's a shame the fashion for young girls requires a look of no underwear/vpl. So as she's wearing these types of clothes anyway, then wearing a thong makes no difference to her pulling her pants up.

I don't think it's your fault, it's because women and their body's and their underwear are so often sexualised in our society through media images and messages etc, that we start to equate things with sex, and obviously you don't want to be thinking of your daughter having sex at that age.

But as you yourself say, nothing about things actually connects with sex. They are just a style of underwear that some women (inexplicably to me!) find comfortable.

It's like the idea that young women shouldn't wear short shorts and skirts. Why shouldn't they, if it's hot and these items feel more comfortable for them? Any fault lies solely with those people who look at young teenage women as sexual objects.

"Do not tell us what to wear, teach the boys not to stare!"

Tryingtohelp12 · 16/11/2025 00:13

i started at 11! I was sporty and it was either that or going commando- knickers hanging out of leotards was completely unacceptable!

I basically only ever wear thongs now unless I’m on my period, I have a ‘hungry bum’ and no matter what knickers end up there anyway so I’d rather wear a thong and not have all the extra fabric!

Freebus · 16/11/2025 00:15

You can get pants that are no vpl.

If you're going to wear thongs - fine, but why bother? They don't cover much and surely are uncomfortable. Go pantless.
