Would you let your 14yr old wear thongs?

I don’t want to, but I noticed last week when she was getting out of the car that when she’s wearing leggings, she is wearing her knickers wedged up her bum so as not to have a VPL, and it looks ridiculous as you can see the fabric bunched up at the top of her bum. She hasn’t asked for thongs but I’d rather she be comfortable, it can’t be comfy walking around with your knickers wedged up your bum all day! There’s no point telling her not to do it as she’d just put it back as soon as she was able to. Teenagers 🙄

On the one hand I’m like, “Thongs at 14?? No way!”
But on the other hand… it’s just knickers and no-one should be seeing them so it shouldn’t matter.
But still, 14 😬

I think you should suggest it to her, she may feel a bit awkward or shy asking mum for some thongs so with your suggestion she may buy herself some next time she’s in town with friends knowing it won’t be weird if you see them or the worry of anticipating a lecture!
I personally wouldn’t wear leggings as ‘trousers’ I’d wear a longer top etc so my bum is covered but if you are wearing leggings as trousers I think it’s much better to be wearing less visible knickers.

edited to add:
if she was wearing a strappy summer dress or an asymmetric top (very fashionable again these days) I assume the thong police would suggest a strapless or multi-way bra with no issue - this isn’t really any different

GagMeWithASpoon · 15/11/2025 21:21

I’d take her shopping and give her some money to buy herself some new (cotton)underwear while do x,y,z , then she has a choice.

notacooldad · 15/11/2025 21:24

A lot of teens wear thongs, although I'm glad to say I've long given them up!( its not a good look on my 60 year old wobbly arse!)

I know this because working in residential I often have to sort out the clothes washing after its dried , not that I go round looking for a knicker line! Also I sometimes have to go shopping with them for new underwear, pjs and basics and thats what they choose if they are regular legging wearers.
So op, throngs aren't particularly outrageous.

I'd be more concerned about what you can see through the leggings. One of our girls had a very light coloured but thin material pair of leggings and as she was wearing a waist length jumper you could see the whole outline of her genital area.

Moonlightfrog · 15/11/2025 21:25

I wore them at 14, I was allowed to buy my own underwear and everyone else was wearing them.

MoonBugs · 15/11/2025 21:26

I would personally buy her some cotton ones before she goes shopping with her friends and buys herself teeny polyester lace g-strings from Primark (speaking from experience as I did that with my pocket money at 14 🥴)

CombatBarbie · 15/11/2025 21:33

My teens started buying them themselves at 12/13 due to leggings issue. Now we are all similar size them 6, 8, me 10 laundry sorting is a nightmare

She only has black leggings and we make sure to test them for see-through-ness in the shop before we buy them. They’re just a bit tight so you can see the outlines of her pants. When she has PE at school she wears leggings for the whole day so she doesn’t have to change them (PE is the last lesson of the day so it’s not like she’s wearing gross, sweaty leggings all day).

I think I’ll have to, though thankfully there’s little chance of her buying something completely unsuitable for herself. She never really goes out and in any case, our town is small and rubbish with no decent clothes shops, not even a Primark 🤣 we have Next and Tesco.

Of course you should let her! Thongs are perfectly comfortable.

regularlatte · 15/11/2025 21:51

I was wearing diamanté g-strings from La Senza at 13.

It’s just underwear. I’ve a 4 year old atm so we are firmly in Lilo & Stitch, but I don’t think it would be worth a second thought in early teens.

HereintheloveofChristIstand · 15/11/2025 22:03

I have always loathed thongs. I had one once and binned it after one wear. I just wear seamless pants if wearing anything tight

La Senza, now there’s a blast from the past! I haven’t thought about them in years 🤣

Why don't you just buy her some 'no VPL' pants instead? (They have laser-cut leg edges instead of hemmed edges so are invisible under clothes.) M&S do a whole range - the high-waist, high-cut leg style, in black or flesh, should work well under leggings: www.marksandspencer.com/l/lingerie/knickers/fs5/no-vpl#intid=gnav_lingerie_core_knickers_no-vpl-knickers

Oohh · 15/11/2025 22:13

I was wearing thongs at 14. Didn’t occur to me that my mum would have a say in my underwear choices at that age. I bought my own. They were more comfortable and didn’t show a VPL. Nothing inappropriate about a standard thong- I find it odd people think that. It’s just a type of underwear some people find more comfortable.

BillieWiper · 15/11/2025 22:17

I don't really think you can dictate what underwear someone wears once they're well into/past puberty. Underwear is really a private concern. Fashion will come into it of course.

I'd certainly advise them to wear something comfortable. But it really is their choice.

If a teen boy wanted to wear a certain style of undies you wouldn't try and tell him he was forbidden from doing so surely?

I guess you could refuse to actually buy her them. But she should be able to use her own pocket money/savings/babysitting or car washing profits on it if she wants.

Thongs are hideous, uncomfortable and vulgar.

No idea why a 14 year old would need to wear them.

I think the people who are posted to say this is fine should remember that they are supposed to be parents, not friends to their kids.

OP you are perfectly right to want to tell her that this not appropriate for her.

Vulgar? Stop clutching your pearls, dear. And you may find them uncomfortable, others don’t.

Vulgar 😂😂😂😂

They aren’t for me but my DD has been wearing them since she was 14. She is 19 now and finds them comfortable and practical!!

tillyandmilly · 15/11/2025 22:44

Urgh - thongs never worn them - never would - hate the feeling of a piece of material wedged between my bum cheeks - yuk

ihatethewordhubby · 15/11/2025 22:45

14 will soon be 16. Parenting 16 will be boyfriends, parties and alcohol discussions. I promise you that you will look back fondly on the thong parenting times ! It's time to start letting go. It's not easy but it's important to allow you and your daughter to maintain a great relationship.

But this thread isn’t about your bum cheeks

BauhausOfEliott · 15/11/2025 22:51

Why wouldn’t you?! Who do you think is going to see them?

They’re practical for avoiding VPL. Better for a teenager to wear a thong than have the outline of their knickers showing to everyone.

Ahfiddlesticks · 15/11/2025 22:51

By 14 I was buying my own underwear and that included thongs (the whale tail look was fashionable) and it didn't really matter what underwear I wore and had no impact on the type of person I became.

therewasafishinthepercolator · 15/11/2025 22:53

Yes. Let her pick her own. Some people don't find them uncomfortable at all.

Flupiness · 15/11/2025 22:54

SparklyBlueDress · 15/11/2025 20:48

Mine has a bottom that gobbles up normal pants and so finds thongs much more comfy. I’m pretty strict about lots of things but underwear that no one is going to see is not a hill I’m going to die on.

Gross. What do you mean your ass ‘gobbles up’ normal underwear?

What a ridiculous over reaction. They are underwear like any other.
