Smoking to vaping?

Foxbox · 06/06/2018 11:33

Has anyone succeeded in swapping smoking for vaping?
I can't stand how addicted to cigarettes I am, I wake every morning in panic about my health.
I just can't seem to get myself to stop! In fact the more I think about it, the more I smoke!
I was thinking trying to switch to vaping might be an idea?
Has anyone managed this? Any tips?
Thank you

I do* think there's quite a difference.

Luna its good to read that you're finally up and running with it! Good to have you join us in our vaping capers and sounds like you're doing really well Smile

Tuttytoffee sounds like you're doing really well too. I find the mornings hard as well. I would usually smoke a lot in the morning. I'm reaching straight for my vape to get topped up in nicotine as soon as I wake up now.

I don't want to jinx myself but I think I can feel a shift happening. I've now not smoked 30 for 2 days running. I think about having a cigarette as lot. I constantly tell myself I can have one if I really want one but I'll chain vape first then think if I really want one now, tell myself I'll have one later if I really want one and carry on like that. I agree that hour by hour is the best approach.

Loving the encouragement, tips and info from all you lovely experienced vapers, so valuable, thank you Flowers

Foxbox that’s really impressive. I think I will get the 18% juice next time. I am getting through a lot of juice! It goes down really quickly when I chain vape. I guess I’ve not smoked about 14 so far today which is good and haven’t really wanted one since my early morning lapse so maybe I’ll get through the rest of the day without a rolly. I can really smell the difference in my clothes.

Foxbox · 17/06/2018 13:37

That's great you haven't wanted one since this morning. I can't remember who it was here who said to take it hour by hour but I think it's the way to go.

I've been having moments of wanting a fag more than anything. It's hard to get under control in the moment because it's such a strong urge. I've been making sure it's easy to access my vape but would be an effort to get my fags, although I think I'd panic if I didn't have any. I've been trying to notice that I really do have enough nicotine so the craving isn't for that, but for the habit. Baby steps...

Hope everyone has a good day

Honestly get some 18mg for the first few weeks at least. Well it seems to be helping me. I'm still craving bad but it's helping lots. Also I read something that helped me this morning..... Don't smoke the vape like you would a cig, quick short drags ect. Take a long slow pull on the vape and hold it in your mouth for a bit, letting it sit there and on your throat then slowly inhale the release through your mouth and nose. Apparently you absorb more nicotine this way! You probably already know this but just in case you don't. Also well done fox it honestly is better taking it hour by hour. As they go by we will think, well if I've gone this long..... 😊

Foxbox · 17/06/2018 14:21

You're making a lot of sense to me Tutty! Agreed re: 'well, if we've got this far..' so much of this is psychological isn't it. Thanks for the technique tips, I think it makes a difference and I'm getting there with this. It takes some getting used to doesn't it, I hadn't realised about exhaling out of both your mouth and nose, I'll give that a go! I think I said it before but for some reason it seems better to me to vape from the corner of my mouth. Weird. Not sure why but anything that helps, I'll take it!
Onwards vapers. Let us know how you're getting on

LoonyLuna · 17/06/2018 14:50

I agree about the side thing, Fox 🦊 think I can taste the flavour more that way.

It's hard to get used to, I think. Sometimes, like the first few puffs seem really dry and a bit crap, but then I think I get the hang of it and it tastes so lovely and smooth. Guess it'll get better as time goes on.

Please don't beat yourself up, dogs, you are making such a huge lifestyle change and it is bound to be hard. Any fag not smoked is a win. But it doesn't mean that when you do have one it's a loss.

4dogs · 17/06/2018 14:56

I’m trying the vaping technique of leaving it in my mouth for a while, think it’s helping. It is all psychological, I think the reason I had a cigarette this morning was cos I wanted to make one and hold one more than because I wanted nicotine. I have washed my ashtray up and put it away. DH smokes and has no interest in giving up, not sure how unhelpful I will find that, he smokes tailor mades
tho whereas I smoked rollies and don’t like
‘proper’ cigarettes so hopefully it won’t bother me too much. How is everyone getting on? Luna, how are you doing?

LoonyLuna · 17/06/2018 15:16

I'm doing good, thanks for asking. No rollies today! But I don't feel like shouting about it because I don't feel it's as impressive as the rest of you! I feel you on the wanting to make a roll up. Such an ingrained habit. My OH doesn't want to quit either. But he has had a go on my vape. Reckon I'll be able to 'turn' him eventually. Keep going, Dogs. You're doing brilliantly.

Tuttytoffee · 17/06/2018 15:32

My partner smokes too and I'm finding it better right now as I know there will always be cigs in the house just in case. When I run out or only havw 1 left I get so anxious. So them being here is making me think that actually, I'm doing better than I think if I'm so far resisting temptation. Also he's just came back inside from smoking and the smell made me want one! Hoping that changes to making me feel sick soon. 🤣 I know if I give up he will more than likely smoke less. He was only a social smoker before we met, over time I guess I made him smoke more. He says he can take it or leave though. I'll see how much he's smoking alone now though if I do stop.

4dogs · 17/06/2018 15:37

You are equally impressive Luna, just because you smoke less doesn’t mean you are less addicted. My dh had a puff on my vape and looked very unimpressed lol. I am definitely chain vaping today, really want a fag about now but am not going go give in. I want today to be 29 not smoked. i can do this, we can do this, foxbox has had two days of 30 not smoked so that’s something for me to aim for. I really want to roll
a cigarette but if i roll it i will smoke it so it’s not happening!

Foxbox · 17/06/2018 17:04

Any cigarette not smoked is a win Yes!! It's really helping to keep being reminded of that.

Really feel the thing about making a rolly, holding it etc. It's ritual isn't. I was thinking about that. I think I can be quite obsessive, maybe that's part of how addiction affects your personality, or maybe it's having that kind of personality that makes you an addict...Hmm
Anyway, what I'm trying to get to is that I'm hoping I can transfer the need for ritual and all the obsessing to vaping instead over time. I'm already quite attached to the vape, my little pouch with all the paraphernalia etc.. so fingers crossed on that one.

I can do this. We can do this Yes!
One foot in front of the other. Repeat etc.,.

I'll make a confession here. I don't recommend it BUT! I had a cigarette about 2 months ago because I had no vape with me.
Did I want another? Nope. And I didn't smoke any more after that

So vaping does work! Finding a flavour was important for me, I fell in love with triphammer shortbread and also their tiger stripe (like a fizzy orange)
Sometimes anything labelled ice or cool will give you an extra throat hit too. If you really really enjoy the flavour you can get hooked on the vape and the cigarettes become less interesting

I carried a pack of cigs with me for 9 months and never smoked one. There is a pack in the house now and I've never felt the need to open them

4dogs · 17/06/2018 20:23

I’ve got this far today with no more cigarettes although this afternoon was really tough, evenings are easier for some reason. finding this thread really helpful, keep reading everyone’s stories and feeling like part of a group is really making a difference.

Tuttytoffee · 17/06/2018 20:44

Dear Lord I've just nearly slipped up! In the kitchen pottering about and the next thing I know I've grabbed a fag and the lighter from by the back door, ready to walk outside and looked in my hand 🤤🤤 It was automatic, normally after each job I do I go and have a cig. As soon as I saw it in my hand it was like something had burned me 😂 put it away quick sharp. Good job I hadn't lit it or I would of been devastated. Keep on your toes people, they are sneaky little buggers 🤣

4dogs · 17/06/2018 20:59

Well done Tutty! They are sneaky indeed!

LoonyLuna · 17/06/2018 21:36

Amazing you stopped yourself tutty! You should be so proud!

No cigs for me today. Think I've over vaped. It's hard to know when to stop, as with a cig it comes to an end. Vape just keeps going! And I've got a lovely cappuccino flavour today. It's sooooo nice!

OH had just asked for my baccy, as he's running low. I knew he would end up having it in the end, but not sure I want him to take it just yet. I think I'd be ok, I've not really thought about it at all since yesterday but the thought of it not being safely in the drawer made me nervous!

I think it'll be so easy for me to get obsessed Fox! I'm already thinking about my 'collection'. I definitely have an obsessive personality. So, I reckon it'll be easy for you to change the ritualistic aspects of smoking to vaping instead! Definitely room for geeking out on it.

Foxbox · 17/06/2018 23:03

Luna yep, vape geeking here we come! 🤓 Know what you mean about having your own baccy atm, I feel like it's really important for me to have some on me so I don't panic! Brilliant you've managed not to have any today!!

Tutty 😂 They are sneaky! That's amazing you stopped yourself at that point. You're doing so well!

4dogs Am I right in thinking it's a 29 not smoked day for you? I think you're doing incredibly well, It hasn't been very long at all has it. Really hope you're feeling proud of yourself 😊

Ollivander that's really good to know that you didn't want more after you had that one, really encouraging 👍

Is it ok to be really pleased with myself here for a minute?! It's my 3rd day in a row of not smoking 30, I'm starting to feel like I'm on a good run. I went out for my birthday today as well, I thought if there'd be a day I decided I'd just have one 'as a treat' it would be today. I'm counting that as a win! 😊

Roll on tomorrow vapers, we're doing great!

OP posts:
Tuttytoffee · 17/06/2018 23:16

Well done Fox! Does this mean that you haven't had any roll ups for 3 days? I know you've previously said about you having 20-30 a day.

Tuttytoffee · 17/06/2018 23:17

Luna You should know if you've had too much vape as apparently it makes you feel sick. If it's helping you the just keep puffing away. 😊

Foxbox · 17/06/2018 23:19

Yes, no Rollies for 3 days.. 😬😁

OP posts:
4dogs · 18/06/2018 07:39

Wow @FoxBox, you are doing amazingly well! And Luna is as well, straight in with a 100% non smoking day. I think Tutty was smoke free as well. I had a 29 not smoked day yesterday, would like to make it 30 not smoked today but we’ll see how it goes. I think I need to get a second vape pen because I use mine so much the battery runs out about 7pm, I have got another one as back up but it’s not very good and doesn’t produce much vape. I’m still doing the slow inhale and keep it in my mouth thing, think it helps.

Tuttytoffee · 18/06/2018 07:42

Wow amazing fox I think you should download the app again now and check out all the health benefits so far of not having a fag. It's fascinating.

BetterthanIthink · 18/06/2018 07:48

Hi all, feeling pretty good with myself. Only 7 cigarettes Saturday and 6 yesterday Smile which I don’t think I’ve had that few for 20 yearsSmile
So I think I’ve not had around 30+ cigarettes which I’m taking as a positive.
Good luck everyone today !!

SamanthaH92 · 18/06/2018 07:56

Yes. I was a heavy smoker. 20 to 40 a day depending on the day. I really struggled to quit when i was pregnant, tried everything apart from vaping. I bought a really cheap vape and managed 2 weeks without a fag and then bought a better vape. I am now 1 year 2 months smoke free. The only problem i find is i cannot get my vape out my hand and i use it a lot. But atleast I'm not smoking x

4dogs · 18/06/2018 08:54

You’re doing really well BetterthanIthink. Thanks for your story SamanthaH92, I like other people’s success stories, it shows it
can be done even by heavy smokers. I normally smoke 30 a day so am/was a heavy smoker myself.
