Smoking to vaping?

Foxbox · 06/06/2018 11:33

Has anyone succeeded in swapping smoking for vaping?
I can't stand how addicted to cigarettes I am, I wake every morning in panic about my health.
I just can't seem to get myself to stop! In fact the more I think about it, the more I smoke!
I was thinking trying to switch to vaping might be an idea?
Has anyone managed this? Any tips?
Thank you

a slip-up isnt a fail. This is a process. Youre trying to get out of a loooonnng ingrained habit.
Jut go back to vaping now, its fine x

Destinysdaughter · 11/06/2018 09:25

You asked how can you tell when the coil needs changing, for me, they last about 2 weeks and it starts to taste kind of 'burnt' ( that's how the man in the vape shop described it)

I also smoked for 30 years, never thought I could quit but don't miss fags at all now! I've been off them for 2 1/2 years now. 😀My favourite flavour is vanilla but I do enjoy trying other ones too.

And you're doing really well! It takes time to change such an ingrained habit, so don't be too hard on yourself if you're still having some fags, it took me about 6 months to completely give up. With hindsight tho, I think I'd try harder to give up the fags but didn't have the confidence that I could. I much prefer vaping and never have any desire to smoke any more.

Foxbox · 11/06/2018 09:47

You lot are brilliant. Thank you. I do feel needy but am lapping up your support!
Yes, a new day, quite a lot on at work, potentially stressful so I'll see how I go Smile
Got myself some sweets grannycakes Smile
Good point well made Branleuse, I'll be repeating your words like a mantra today...
DestinysDaughter- that's fabulous! You've done really well, I'll take comfort in your story and take on board what you say about how you feel about it in retrospect. Thanks for the tips too Smile
Have a great day you lovely lot Flowers

Youredoing so well, stop being so hard on yourself!

Foxbox · 12/06/2018 08:28

Thank you Smile
I had 2 fags yesterday, both of which I desperately wanted but didn't enjoy.Work makes me want to smoke! Not beating myself up and can breathe much better already.
Met 2 people who both stopped using vaping and were back smoking, what they had to say wasn't that helpful as you can imagine!

OP posts:
HaveAWeeNap · 12/06/2018 09:52

Ignore them. Keep at it. Each fag less is a fag less, simple as that.

grannycake · 12/06/2018 10:36

haveaweenap has it exactly right. Stop dwelling on the negatives. I don't know how many a day you used to smoke but if it was 20 then its not "OMG I failed because I smoked 2" but "wow I didn't smoke 18 fags yesterday - go me!"

Well done OP I think you're doing great - its tough but you're beating it

Foxbox · 12/06/2018 11:19

Roger that, you make a lot of sense!
So, I have smoked a grand total of 13 fags in the last 6 days, however I would usually have had at least 170 in that time! 157 fags not smoked!!
It is tough but definitely a win! Thank you

Foxbox · 12/06/2018 11:24

Oh, and my fingers are no longer nicotine stained ✅

OP posts:
Guardsman18 · 12/06/2018 18:18

Good news about your fingers Foxbox!

How is the vaping going today? We haven't forgotten you!

HaveAWeeNap · 12/06/2018 19:09

157 fewer fags! My goodness, that is epic, absolutely brilliant. And monetary wise that's got to be a saving of what, approx £62 already?

TeamRick · 12/06/2018 20:10

Hi Foxbox please don't be down hearted, I did both for years, just gradually vaped more.
I always have a packet of cigs and do sometimes smoke one or 2, sometimes I just can't be bothered with batteries etc but no way could I ever go back to smoking 20 per day, I would be sick!

I never, ever smoke during the working day or if I'm out with none smokers, and actually go weeks without one but every now & then nothing else cuts it!
That doesn't worry me too much, not spending ££££ per day & hopefully it's not going to kill me!
Don't give up giving up! Every cigarette not smoked is a victory!

Destinysdaughter · 12/06/2018 21:05

Agree, you’re doing great! Think of how you will feel in 6 months or a year, feeling well and with loads more money...😀

Foxbox · 12/06/2018 23:30

Aaawww!
I've had a long day and just come back here to find your messages of support 😍

I'm very lucky to have your support and also very moved by it.
So, I've been finding ways to give the same back to others because this is helping me so much.
It's amazing what a difference it makes.

So today I've had 1 fag and am happy about the 29ish not smoked 👍

It's hard to judge how much I've saved because of smoking roll-ups but I think I'd be into my second 50g pouch by now so that's got to be at least £40+ I'd have spent...

I do think my breathing is a bit better already Smile

Really good to hear your story too TeamRick, you've done brilliantly, really encouraging to hear.

I'm definitely better with not completely banning myself from smoking. Someone said earlier on in this thread that if they wanted a fag they'd vape first then have one if they still really wanted it so I'm going with that approach.

Someone I was working with today went off for a ciggie break. My initial reaction was a huge urge to follow. Then I breathed for a minute and felt relieved that I didn't actually need one, I'd go and have a vape in a minute, which is what I did.

There's some major pattern/habit changing to be done but I'm going to take your advice and focus on the wins where I can. Baby steps and all that!

4dogs · 13/06/2018 09:22

This thread is brilliant because I am thinking of going to vaping. I have been a smoker for 35 years but am going off it. The only thing putting me off vaping is all the technical bits like coils, I’m worried I’ll get it wrong. I have an old Cirro vape that someone gave me a few years’ ago so have been puffing that this morning. Think I need to visit a vape shop. @Foxbox you are doing amazingly well and are inspiring me. I also smoke roll ups and am sick of nicotine stained fingers!

Foxbox · 13/06/2018 09:29

Thinking about wins before I start my working day:
✅I'm not hacking up my lungs when I wake up (although I'm aware I might have a worse cough for a while as my lungs clear once I'm totally off the fags)
✅No more yellow fingers
✅I used to easily get 'pins and needles' in my hands, circulation I guess. I haven't had that that past couple of days
✅Fags don't taste good when I do have them
✅ money saved
✅ hours of life re-gained due to fags not smoked
✅ I've got to smell better...
✅ car smells better due to vaping not smoking in it
✅ Feeling supported here has made me want to show support to others, so I'm looking for ways to do that in everyday life
✅ sense of taste is changing- weirdly I don't crave sweet things atm
✅ my health anxiety is easing
✅ Breathing is improved
✅ I think my skin looks a bit better
✅ I'm drinking more water

Surprised there's so much on that list already! Smile

4dogs · 13/06/2018 10:11

That’s an inspiring list.

Foxbox · 13/06/2018 10:16

4dogs Great to have you here! Join me! These lot are brilliant for support, have a read back. Yes, go to the vape shop, they're very helpful. I have an endurance t20 and fag flavour 18mg liquid. I can't believe I've got this far in a few days. Read everyone's else's inspiring stories here, they've really helped me.
We can do this!

OP posts:
Branleuse · 13/06/2018 10:18

thats brilliant @Foxbox keep up the good work. Im so glad youre seeing so many improvements so quickly. I bet that feels good

4dogs · 13/06/2018 10:43

I can’t get to vape shop til tomorrow but do have a not very good vape for now. I have had 3 cigarettes so far today which is probably half what I normally have so that’s progress. I had a go on a friend’s vape yesterday, not sure of model but I really liked it, much better than the one I currently have. I have never felt like I want to stop smoking before, this is a new feeling for me and I hadn’t considered vaping til yesterday (now feel silly for not thinking of it sooner lol). I think it is the way forward tho and it has been great to read the stories on this thread.

grannycake · 13/06/2018 12:50

Good luck 4dogs. I never thought I would do it (40 a day smoker for 40+ years). I posted upthread about kit but when I started I only had a basic kit with disposable tips I didn't invest in anything pricier until I was convinced it was going to work. I'm happy to answer any questions you have.
Foxbox seems like it's going really well. So glad you're being so positive - it's not what you're giving up but what you're gaining

Foxbox · 13/06/2018 20:16

Branluese thank you, I do feel better already- hopefully I'll feel more benefits as time goes on

grannycake thank you too! yes, I'm trying to focus on the positives and indeed what I'm gaining. Consciously re-framing the situation that way is helping...

4dogs sounds like your doing really well too Smile like someone said to me here, focus on the fags not smoked rather than the ones you have. I do think that really helps. If you're going off smoking that sounds like a really good place to start from with the 'gain rather than loss' approach, let us know how you're getting on

0 fags so far today for me and it's not easy but I can feel it getting easier... still going to take it bit by bit and just commit to vaping before I reach for a fag, not seeing it as a fail if I eventually do. I think I have more chance of sneaking it past myself that way!

HaveAWeeNap · 14/06/2018 06:15

Ace! Everything going really well!
And lovely to see others may be lurking and reading and getting motivated to switch to vaping too.

4dogs · 14/06/2018 08:22

I like the idea of fags not smoked. I had about 7 yesterday so that’s at least 20 not smoked! Have had one so far today, have one rolled and ready but have managed to resist so far. Morning is when I smoke the most usually. Foxbox you are doing amazingly well! You’re inspiring me.

Foxbox · 14/06/2018 09:41

My big news of yesterday is that I didn't want a fag at all!!! Still taking it bit by bit, but I'm adding that to my wins list!

I had a sketchy moment when my vape ran out of battery but luckily I'd taken previous advice given here and had my supplies pouch with me with the portable charger and spare pen vape I'd bought from the garage a while back. It's not as good as the one I'm using but it did the trick when I needed it.

I've also found an e liquid I like after a bit of trial and error. Vampire vape sweet tobacco 18mg. It's not as cheap as some but I figure it's still no where near as expensive as actual tobacco.

The man in the vape shop said to me that it's important to find a liquid you will like all day. Good point. I had a menthol one before that I liked at first but was way to sickly for me by later on in the day.

I might fill the spare pen vape with the menthol and have a bit if I fancy a change.

4dogs that's brilliant! You're doing really well. Big win there! As you can see earlier in this thread I didn't find it easy to start with but I do feel like I'm getting there, I'm surprised how well I'm getting used to it. I think the trick is to chain vape! Don't feel deprived of nicotine. Focus on the positives of vaping and negatives of smoking. Don't beat yourself up.

I don't seem to work so well with setting targets but also love the counting of fags not smoked. 190ish for me so far Smile

I also love the idea of people lurking and being inspired to try it. Honestly when I look at my OP I see someone who was a complete slave to smoking with no way out. That was only last week and now it seems to be going well.
This thread is helping me so much Smile
