I wear maxis.

Wore one to an event on Saturday evening and got loads of compliments. So.....either I did look good in it....... OR........ they were all lying and want to make me look ridiculous when I wear said maxi again under the illusion I look good.....

In fact, I wore one today and received 2 compliments from total strangers!

alarkaspree · 24/05/2010 22:48

They look like evening-wear. Therefore, they don't look ridiculous at evening events, but they do in the playground/on the beach. imo.

DarrellRivers · 24/05/2010 22:56

I agree. Only saw one woman looking fab and she was a vvvvvvvvv slim pre-raphelite type.

LetThemEatCake · 24/05/2010 23:04

nah, disagree. I've seen a few ladies who look lovely in theirs and that, if you'll pardon my big-headedness, includes me

BafanaBafana · 24/05/2010 23:07

Totally agree. Not a good look on 99.9% of women.

bran · 24/05/2010 23:13

I'm quite enjoying seeing all the maxi-wearers, there's a frisson of creepiness because they all look like the original female cast of Stepford Wives.

Here is a picture of my local Waitrose last weekend.

TheCrackFox · 24/05/2010 23:18

I don't own a maxi but I think they look lovely.

I love love love maxi dresses! Was saying to my husband last week how depressed I was at the fact that, as I'm still breastfeeding and bigger up top, I can't fit into my dresses (which I used to wear all the time).

However, having started cutting down on breastfeeding, I managed to fit into one of them this evening (yay!), but still had a bit of side cleavage/double boobage. Keeping fingers crossed that I'll be in them again come July.

MrsSeanBean · 25/05/2010 00:06

I think they're lovely, especially the patterned paisley tiered styles, reminds me of 70s 'party' dresses worn when about 9. Very chic in a boho way, I think you need an artfully casual yet very well groomed look to style them well though. Ringlet hair, super high wedges, ethnic cuffs and beads... Happy days.

HonestyBox · 25/05/2010 02:07

I think they have the uncanny ability, considering they are so voluminous, to make one look fat...I saw a woman wearing one the other day and I don't know if it was the brightness of the light or the fall of the material but it seemed to show up every single wobble of her butt and its exact shape. A bit like seeing her in knickers. This was just a normal woman. 70s figures, a la Stepford Wives, would do well in one of these I reckon.

noddyholder · 25/05/2010 07:29

I agree if you want that bianca Jagger 70s elegant look then you have to be really tall and slim and keep it simple.brighton is awash with them atm combined with cheap gladiator shoes and chnky primark jewellery and they look terrible.Worn in a simple way they are lovely but they are this years gypsy skirt common!

ZZZenAgain · 25/05/2010 07:32

I had one on last weekend ready to go out and dd wouldn't let me wear it

but it was long and straight not tiered and wide

ZZZenAgain · 25/05/2010 07:35

that' bad if all your wobbles and flab show through. Wondering why they don't cover you up better - is it that the material is too thin then?

SixtyFootDoll · 25/05/2010 07:37

ROFL at secondcomings vacuum packed minge!

I have a tshirt maxi and i look fab in it as far as I am concerned!

Wanderingsheep · 25/05/2010 07:43

I like them. I don't own one. I'm short and I've got no idea what I would look like in one but last year my friend ( who is short) was heavily pregnant and she had one on to one of our toddler groups. She looked lovely, really pretty and summery!

Adair · 25/05/2010 07:46

Oh I saw someone yest in a great pink maxi skirt, and someone in a v hippyish purple maxi dress. Both looked great, in my v humble opinion - though prob not from standards on this board (pink skirt woman had slightly too tight t-shirt and waistcoat over top.. was still a great skirt though - and she looked summery and happy!).

Not into this 'perfection look' some people on MN are after. I thought we were supposed to grow out of that after our self-conscious magazine-absorbing teens?

flimflammum · 25/05/2010 07:55

They're great if you want to cover up your varicose veins.
(IME )

ShinyAndNew · 25/05/2010 08:00

I look ridiculous in mine. And about three sizes bigger than I really am. But it's cool and comfortable when you are running about after two children and a dog.

However I am now on a major diet for my holidays so I don't look quite so silly.

usualsuspect · 25/05/2010 08:04

I haven't seen anyone wearing one ...think they only exist on MN

piratecat · 25/05/2010 08:05

pmsl secondcomings vacuum packed minge!!!

lou4791 · 25/05/2010 08:15

Love them

notyummy · 25/05/2010 08:26

They are great - although (as I have mentioned on a similar thread...) they won't suit everyone. Just like other popular items, like skinny jeans for example (although doesn't stop people trying to wear them when they probably shouldn't.)

I am tall with small boobs and think I look pretty fab in a maxi [modest emoticon]. I have loads! That said, I need to be wary of the really voluminous ones as they do add bulk, and as a pear shape I can't afford too much of that.

crumpette · 25/05/2010 08:38

Oh I've seen loads of people wearing them near me, only 2 have looked good though- one was nearing 6 foot tall, darkish skin tone, casually windswept dark hair and roughly a size 8, gliding through the park like a supermodel filming a pantene ad, and the other had a thin strapless one on but was young and had peroxide blonde cropped funky hair and looked very cool. All the others looked ridiculous ..I would fall into the ridiculous category so mine has never been worn..

colditz · 25/05/2010 08:44

i am 5.1 and dumpling shaped, I don't wear anything below the knee.

I swa a woman in one yesterday who looked like a floaty uptrurned flowerpot.
