I'd always go with a halter neck shape that flares out at the bottom (limited time only pic on profile). Appreciate that may be hard for those heavy on top, but that's if you buy the standard high street versions which, IMO, are always made for a certain type of shape (no boobs, teeny hips). It's possible to find a great tailor (well, for those in London at any rate) to make you one at a reasonable price.

The great thing about them is you don't have to care about depilating your legs, or a pedicure if the dress is long enough. Can you tell I'm a bit of a slattern when it comes to those things?

southeastastra · 25/05/2010 08:50

ha they remind me of stepford wives too.

and i remember them in the 70s ew. stricly evening wear.

notyummy · 25/05/2010 09:01

Asana - I have a girl crush . You a great advert for a maxi.

I wore this at the weekend and got compliments from 2 strangers (one male, one female). I honestly think that they can be very flattering:

a. if you are 'dress wearing type' - and I appreciate not everyone is and

b. are much easier to wear if you are of a certain height and build.

colditz · 25/05/2010 09:04

Asana you are a rare person on which a mazi doesn't look like a loo roll cover.

this is because you're tall and gorgeous.

Most women are not (unless dutch)

BafanaBafana · 25/05/2010 09:10

Asana, you are one of the 0.1% of people who look absolutely gorgeous in a maxi dress

Ronaldinhio · 25/05/2010 09:13

ok asana aside

everyone i have ever seen in a maxi, off the beach, looks wrong

notyummy · 25/05/2010 09:16

You are wrong!

Quite a few of them look lovely.

Much more flattering on people than some of slightly dodgy shorts/capris and ill fitting tops that come out every summer.

belgo · 25/05/2010 09:20

I tried on several maxi dresses last weekend. I looked very pregnant (I'm not! I'm a size 12/14 and medium height). I didn't buy any of them.

Asana you are beautiful!

MyGuyMag · 25/05/2010 09:21

lol at bran's link - so true

Ronaldinhio · 25/05/2010 09:22

mostly people look like floating sofas in maxi dresses..it's very distressing

Hassled · 25/05/2010 09:25

Asana - you are just so bloody gorgeous . You'd look good wearing ANYTHING - we can't use you as evidence that some women look good in a maxi . It's not exactly a controlled experiment.

I like the concept, but I do think you have to be tall and thin to carry it off. For short middle-aged women with a bit of a belly - just don't go there.

noddyholder · 25/05/2010 09:29

Asana you look amazing and even more make me think they are only for someone who looks even half as good!Quite good as a beach cover up for average joes though just not as daywear

Lauriefairycake · 25/05/2010 09:30

I would love one but at 5ft and a size 18 20 I would look hilarious.

OrmRenewed · 25/05/2010 09:33

I don't care. I love mine because it's so comfortable. So ner.

notyummy · 25/05/2010 09:34

I'm with you Orm.

They are good for pears.

Am 5 ft 10. Size 10 on top, 12 on bottom.

I accept that height/chest size helps.

Adair · 25/05/2010 09:36

Yeah, go Orm! And I bet you look lovely and happy and summery too .

OrmRenewed · 25/05/2010 09:39

Thankyou.

I'm a 5'11 so maybe it helps. However I suspect I may be doing a flouncy lampshade impression

JaxTellersOldLady · 25/05/2010 09:41

well I am a size 16 (on a good day) and I wore a maxi dress yesterday. Got lots of lovely compliments and I am sure that had I looked hideous then my BF would have told me... she usually does if she doesnt like what I have on!

So, I will continue to wear it and ner ner ne ner ner.

crumpette · 25/05/2010 09:45

Asana you are stunning! ps same job as me

Am still not convinced about maxidresses though, unless I start to look like Asana I don't think I'd get away with it

DaydreamDolly · 25/05/2010 09:46

Oh dear, I wore a maxi at the weekend, got loads of compliments (one lady said I looked divine)
But now I am worried I looked like a dick.
I am 5ft5 and size 12, but I wear the halterneck vesion that is tight under bust then hangs straight. DH thought I looked sexy so I guess that's all the matters (who am I kidding)

DaydreamDolly · 25/05/2010 09:47

that matters....

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 25/05/2010 09:49

I haven't got one and would feel silly.

just cannot get excited about something so wafty.

Ronaldinhio · 25/05/2010 09:49

this or this or this

JaxTellersOldLady · 25/05/2010 09:50

I would much rather wear a maxi dress and look stepford wife than what I saw this morning, slim lady wearing short shorts with high heels, looked so muttony it was awful. Much rather be covered up and look classy than have my tits and arse hanging out and looking like a street walker.

MadameOvary · 25/05/2010 09:52

I am soooo of women who can shave their heads and look, if possible, even more stunning.
Asana, I'm looking at you...
