I am tall and v slim and thought I look pretty good in maxi dresses, but having just seen Asana's pics, I now think I look rubbish!!

I saw a mum in the playground yesterday in the jersey one from New Look. She's a bit overweight and she looked a fright - it was clinging to all the bits it shouldn't.

brennannbooth · 25/05/2010 14:54

There's a mum at DS's school looks great in hers, on paper it might sound off as she is maybe a size 20 but she has a fab chest and amazing hair and it really flatters her. I would tell her so but it seems a bit odd to comment on another women's boobs, no?

venusonarockbun · 25/05/2010 15:17

I looked at the New Look one and it just seems to be - well - very skimped in the anount of fabric used. Its extremely narrow at the bottom which looks as if walking would be difficult. Anyone got one? Should I have another look?

MrsMeow · 25/05/2010 15:33

Asana, you are one of the most stunning women I have ever seen. Truly! !! I really like the circles dress in the bottom photo.

I saw a lady in one on Sunday, she was probably my height (5.5") and a size 12, dark bobbed hair and big sunglasses. She looked lovely - her dress was a dark purple colour with some sort of pattern on, I think black diamond shapes or zigzags...didn't want to stare too much! I've tried to google the dress, with no luck. It was really lovely though.

bobbiewickham · 25/05/2010 15:37

New Look one fine if you go a size up.

If not it does cling a bit.

I plan to use it as a holiday coverup/garden doss dress.

scratchmyback · 25/05/2010 15:54

Orm - I am the same height as you and still haven't found one long enough! Where did you get yours from?
I tried the DP one on that tall people on MN have bought - it was nice but only touched my ankles, I want mine to skim the floor.

OrmRenewed · 25/05/2010 16:02

Oh mine came from Peacocks and it only reaches my ankles.

TheFatOwlOfTheRemove · 25/05/2010 16:03

I have just bought a tie dyed purple and bacl one

I am planning to wear it with sparkly ballet flats and a sheer crumply black hooded jacket

and if anyone thinks it's naff they can go piss up a rope

PeachMelba78 · 25/05/2010 16:19

I am 5 foot 1 and love my maxi dresses! I am a size 6 and prefer the jersy styles with the cups inside so you don't have to wear a bra. My favourite ones are from Republic, but I also have a beachy one that I wear abroad - it is great as a coverup. Maxi dresses are so comfy and great when it's hot!

summer111 · 25/05/2010 16:57

I wore mine on Sunday and got two compliments for it - one from a random stranger! I'm 5'9" and a size 10 which probably helps. I felt really good in it and in the end of the day, if what you are wearing gives you confidence, what does it matter what anyone else thinks???
So there

Fimbo · 25/05/2010 17:11

I have two, one is a sort of ethnicy type print in a cotton like material which I got for the bargainous price of £10 from Greenwich Market, it skims the floor, it has bra strap type things on it. I wear it will a little purple cardigan and my £2 silver jewelled Primark flip flops.

The other is a lined black cotton number from Primark again with the spaghetti straps I wear it with different colours of cardis and black flip flops (leather).

y y y to last year's Boden and this year's White Co.

Grandhighpoohba · 25/05/2010 17:51

Ok, so what are the overweight and the undertall meant to wear in the heat, out of interest? You don't want to see our flabby, stubby legs, but we look rediculous in a long dress? I find it really depressing that women seem to think that if you aren't perfect, you should blend into the background. If you don't have the figure of a model, there is no outfit that will make you look like one. So I shall continue to wear my maxi. (5ft 5, size 16, pregnant)I may look large, but thats because I am!

i think OP, that the ones i have seen so far in the shops have been quite cheap beach-wear looking ones (particularly disappointing from M&S) and not very nicely cut (long, but mean with the flared skirt, so lacking in swishyness, and I hate simple tiering..i am not a cake...)
there have been a few exceptions...

i am still lusting after one, but one waaaaay out of my price range. It looks very nicely cut.
and i would prefer to wear with heels - to add height, rather than gladiator sandals.

mrsruffallo · 25/05/2010 19:38

I love them, but you do have to slim and have a good posture

EdgarAllenPoll · 25/05/2010 19:38

and my best mate who is petite but curvy wore one to my wedding which looked great - it gave her a fantastic cleaveage, and made her look very elegant. which she is anyway...

lal123 · 25/05/2010 19:50

Like poohba I'm getting a bit fed up with mners saying that if you are over a size 12 you shouldn't wear - shorts/maxi dresses/skirts etc etc. Going naked isn't an option so maybe all of us normal women whould just hide inside during the summer to avoid offending you

I'm size 18, about 5ft 9 and I've got a maxi dress and (apart from the fact that I've just discovered it might be see through... )love it - as does my DD (6) and all her wee friends.

traceybath · 25/05/2010 20:01

Lal123 - I quite agree.

Here's how to wear a maxi. Its a DM link for those who are easily offended .

BatEars · 25/05/2010 20:06

Asana could quite clearly wear a proper loo roll cover and look fantastic.

For the rest of us maxis are more trying.

I have one that I adore, but I am conscious that I could look better than I do in it.

I think the key may well be to avoid all jersey-type fabric, as it tends to cling where you wish it wouldn't.

traceybath · 25/05/2010 20:09

You see I only suit jersey ones as they're more fitted.

As with so many things - you need to try lots on to find the one that suits you

helyg · 25/05/2010 20:59

traceybath: that's how I wear mine (first pic, with denim jacket) except mine is a size 16

Feelingsensitive · 25/05/2010 21:15

I saw someone outside the school gates in one yesterday and ahve to say I thought it looked awful. I am 5' 4 and 'curvy' and I woudlnt be seen dead in one. I imagine they look OK on tall skinny types though with small norks. Most tend to be strapless so small norks are something of a necessity IMO.

EdgarAllenPoll · 25/05/2010 21:19

agree that strapless ones are for the mini-norked only, (unless you have some amazing strapless bra that i have yet to enconter..)

there are plenty of strappy ones online (believe me i have looked!)

though i would never wear a denim jacket with one... or with anything for hat matter! denim jackets are great for the pert of bum...
