Jax - I agree with you, would much rather see a lady in a maxi than short shorts/skirts with white legs hanging out and tight tops with muffins galore!

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 25/05/2010 10:02

High heels with shorts does tend to look terrible.

Asana · 25/05/2010 10:04

Pah! Tall I'm not (unless you consider 5'2.5" tall). And yes, I reserve the right to that extra 0.5"!

notyummy, love the dress you've linked to. Unfortunately, I doubt it would suit me. I tend to look a bit top-heavy in strapless styles (due to the boobs and lack of hips).

You all make me want to go shopping now! Well, except for Ronaldinhio's 1st and 3rd links. Those I can do without!

OrientCalf · 25/05/2010 10:15

I have seen a few women looking good in them, but I do think that they're better suited to cocktails by the poolside/beach as the sun goes down on a hot day than the high street (not that the former bears any relation to my RL!)

I don't have one because they#re just not me

helyg · 25/05/2010 10:24

I have one and I love it. It is navy jersey material, with a tie dyed design on it, so it looks very casual. I wear it with flat sandals and a denim jacket, and I think I look OK!

teta · 25/05/2010 11:01

I wear maxi skirts and vests and look nice according to friends and family and i am small and not skinny at all.I saw lots of maxi dresses on all shapes including pregnant ladies on sunday and even the curvaceous ones looked lovely [but they all had little cardigans on].I also saw chubby women in shorts and they looked awful!

traceybath · 25/05/2010 11:16

OK - I was a sceptic and am 5ft size 6-8 and had to try on a lot to find ones that suit me.

So for me they need to be pretty plain and very fitted/skimming - am too small for voluminous fabric.

But they do look nice.

But then today I'm wearing skinny white jeans another no no according to many on mn and do I care?

It would be so nice one day on mn to see an OP saying 'wow I saw someone looking stunning today wearing . . .'.

Its just clothes after all and its fun to experiment.

Asana - you are beyond stunning.

OrmRenewed · 25/05/2010 11:18

"It would be so nice one day on mn to see an OP saying 'wow I saw someone looking stunning today wearing . . .'."

I totally agree. I don't go for 'stunning' mind you, just 'doesn't frighten the children'

MarshaBrady · 25/05/2010 11:23

They suit me, but I always look too dressy in them for anything but weddings and what not. Might be the height thing, am tall.

Asana you are very beautiful!, and yes maxi dresses suit you.

lynnexxxo · 25/05/2010 11:24

I want to join the maxi revolution! Unfortunately every one I have tried on makes me look like I'm wearing my grannies nightie.

I'm 5ft 7, size 14 12 with ok norks and a mummy jelly belly.

Now they all look nice on the models but does anyone actually own one that looks nice (oh and doesn't cost too much).

SoLongAsItsHealthy · 25/05/2010 13:04

Hideous, I think they look atrocious. Have not seen anyone look good in them. Neither the short dumpies nor the skinny minnies I'm afraid. Unless you are clearly fabulously wealthy and sporting it on a yacht in Cannes, YOU JUST LOOK RIDICULOUS.

Get 'em off ladies.

bobbiewickham · 25/05/2010 13:12

Right, I like them but with reservations.

For me, they have to be made of jersey, plain colour, thick straps and straight.

I look a bugger in printed/tiered/frilly efforts with shoestring straps.

Last years boden v good, and the New Look fifteen quid one fine if you go a size up. Have just had one delivered from the White Company in navy and it looks nice.

BUT for me, simple design, very few accessories and flat shoes. And not in Sainsbury's.

williewalshsballs · 25/05/2010 13:12

Just popping in to at asana.

castille · 25/05/2010 13:14

I saw see a pretty, young, blonde slip of a girl floating about in one the other day and she looked good.

But most over 25s in them remind me too much of Marjorie Leadbetter.

withorwithoutyou · 25/05/2010 13:16

They are similar to those long gypsy skirts of a few summers ago in that very few women have the stature to carry them off.

bibbitybobbityhat · 25/05/2010 13:20

They are perfectly fine, infact very lovely, if you are wearing them to an evening grown-ups party.

For day time/school run they really do look utterly ridiculous.

donnie · 25/05/2010 13:22

You have to have good arms and prominent collar bones to look good in a maxi. Otherwise you just look like a puffed up ball of pasty flab! IMVHO!

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 25/05/2010 13:22

I wore mine yesterday and someone gasped at me how they loved my dress. DS1 came out of school and saw me and said Wow mummy!

lucykate · 25/05/2010 13:26

do maxi dresses not make you feel like you've left the house wearing a nightie though?

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 25/05/2010 13:27

No. It is great to just put one thing on and not have to choose a top and bottom. It takes me days to get ready . I plan to buy more dresses. Also, I have terrible legs so I like that they are covered.

Rockbird · 25/05/2010 13:30

Asana, OMG I didn't realise I hated you so much! Gorgeous girlie that you are

I do not own a maxi dress nor have I ever looked at one in a shop. I would look like the circus elephant wearing the tent. And I'm a shortarse. Not maxi material.

Sithmummy · 25/05/2010 13:32

castille My mum is 69 and wore a lovely navy maxi at an afternoon 'do'. She looked great.
It was from Oasis on-line and wasn't expensive, and has sleeves for all of those wth arm issues.

omnishambles · 25/05/2010 13:36

mine looks ok. So there.

olderandwider · 25/05/2010 13:51

bobbiewickham - so agree. Just bought a navy one in heavy jersey fabric and I love it. I think it looks good, but not tried it out on my public yet .

OrientCalf · 25/05/2010 14:51

right

Just went into central London and saw two lovely ones

one girl was very slim, wearing a navy jersey one gathered under the bust with a small tier at the very bottom

the other girl was larger but not really overweight, dress was black jersey, worn with dark blue denim jacket and red glads

both looked very cool (in all meanings of the word, though it's not too hot today)

I realised that I only really like the ones in heavier fabrics, perhaps because they tend to drape better?
