Burn all my Boden, this is why-
138

darcymum · 29/04/2010 16:02

I really like Boden clothes but just can't buy them any more.

  1. Identikit clothes for the middle classes.

  2. Boden clothes are very recognisable as Boden (make sure everyone knows you can afford them) I think that's half the point.

  3. People show off about Boden (see above)

  4. I have never been to a Boden sale but have heard they are a feeding frenzy, and for what, its only some clothes.

  5. People see Boden as aspirational, they've made it if wearing Boden, I don't want to be associated with this materialism.

Anyone want to add to my list?

I'm not going to burn all my DCs clothes obviously, I'm just not going to buy them any more.

Lol, was getting all puffed up to write a long comment but it seems I already did - six years ago!

So it's a zombie thread but still. Anyone pretending to think thirty five quid for kids jeans is cheap can naff off. You know fine well that for the vast majority of people in the UK, those prices are not cheap. Clearly, it is you who wishes to show off.

I've been buying Boden for years!!....at least 20!.... I do find it has become a bit too samey recently and quality can be variable but I love my raincoat

I've never seen anything Boden I've liked much.

It's a bit ordinary for the price and veering to frumpy/mumsy.

I'd never heard of Boden until I joined MN.

Ancient thread and I think Boden has tried to expand their market a bit beyond the 'fun' print brigade since 2010. A lot of their plain stuff, especially knitwear, is good quality (though not as good as it was) and they've done the more fashion forward pieces in their capsule range too (even if they don't always hit the mark).

I had a Biden epiphany a few years back and asked myself why the he'll in my late 30's was I dressing like a frump?
It's all just so staid and identikit "mum wear".

why the fuck do people show off about Boden

its stripy t-shirt not Gucci

as Diddle said, if people see Boden as aspirational. that's a bit sad

then again, I am from London and Boden is seen being a bit cringe round these parts

I agree with UggMum I used to buy Boden for the kids quite a bit before they outgrew it as I loved the bright colours, the quality, the kids liked the comfort and after use I resold it on eBay for not very much less than I paid for it originally. Some of the styles now are quite naff and OTT. However, we just encountered some awful Boden loving younger kids on holiday this year who were so full of themselves and their own self importance I might want to distance myself from those types.

Not as cringeworthy as that statement, I'd wager.

I wear Boden. I am a fat, middle aged woman who absolutely HATES clothes shopping. I like their website, I like having their stuff delivered to my house and their returns policy is great. I live opposite a post office so returning stuff is not a problem. I never pay full price - although even with 10% / 15% / 20% off it is still expensive.

No, I don't live in London (Dublin) and if I thought people recognised a top as Boden, I'd be a little embarrassed too.
If somebody said ''is that Max Mara?'' Is that Isabel Marant? I'd say it is darling, from me, to me, but shshsh.

don't own one single item from Max Mara YET

I'm aspiring.

cru I hear you but there are so many shops who are good at returns! I don't even live in the UK and I can return items sometimes either to a branch of the shop or through a parcel motel service and see the money re-credited to my a/c within five days.

Boden? Slightly frumpy clothes for middle aged mummies. Like me! Not in the least aspirational....more "need something I can wear on the school run and then go out in afterwards" sort of thing.

Not all Boden is recognisable. Some of it is very typically Biden but lots of it is just better quality basics. Now Cath kidston, orla kiely and even joules I would say are far more recognisable.
It met we'll be manufactured in China but pretty much everything is.
I wear Biden but today I'm wearing gap jeans and an old top shop blouse. They are both decent quality. It's better quality that sells Boden items for me.
I agree with pp, no idea why MN gets worked up about it. Per Una, I get that. Boden, not so much.

I like boden. I live in Ireland. Here, it has non of the attributes mentioned. It's not recognisable. It's not aspirational. It's not that expensive (it's a far cry from Chanel) It's just a range of fairly decent basics. The emotion the brand seems to elicit on here is bizarre.

I buy Boden Clearance. At 50% off, then minus 20%VAT, it's a bargain. But I buy tried and true - their trousers are perfect for me, love their Bretons, and some of their tees. Everyone admires the style - not seen everywhere here in the Colonies.

Their 7/8 chinos are a perfect fit/length for me so you can all just bugger off!!
Totally avoid their prints though

Aaarggh. A zombie Angry

Still all true though. Although, as a pp said, maybe there's a few plainer pieces on offer these days. I have one black jersey dress that I've worn a lot.

damngood I'm in Dublin too. I have a Boden mac that I wear to push the buggy to the park if it might rain. Don't give a bollix if anyone sees! If they recognise it as Boden they must have looked themselves.

I also have a MaxMara coat. It doesn't keep my hair dry though Wink

Heh, I'm in Dublin as well, I don't think anyone has been sniggering at me for my occasional Boden garment. They've had quite a few plainer things that I've really liked over the last couple of years - the ruched dresses and tops were v good. You would have to bribe me considerable sums to get me into one of their "fun" prints, mind (though I did wear a pair of what I can only describe as "mum shorts" on holiday. Shhh.)
