Tattoos - Yes or No?

Time to confess - who's got tattoos? What are they, and where are they? Do you love them, loathe them, wish you'd never got them, hope to get rid of them, or plan to get more?

Always wondered if they seemed like a good idea at the time, and then later become something you'd rather not have the rest of your life...

used to LOVE them, went to get one, saw pain of friend ahead of me in queue and decided against..

now (15 years later) I hate them -- especially on older women... looks so tragic look - saggy tattoos on flaccid flesh...

Earlybird · 04/06/2005 22:25

And, do you like tattoos on your men?

OP posts:
mancmum · 04/06/2005 22:25

do happen to love my DHs -- hate to say it but they do look better on men than women...

LGJ · 04/06/2005 22:26

Loathe them.

Sorry but I just hate them.

QueenEagle · 04/06/2005 22:27

Absolutely NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

nutcracker · 04/06/2005 22:28

I have one on my shoulder with the dd's names on. It was actually meant to have 3 names on but I told the bloke to chnage it to two as I wasn't having anymore kids.................oooops

I like some on blokes, depends where and what they are.

SenoraPostrophe · 04/06/2005 22:28

yes, I have a slightly crappy one on my back (turned out to be the tatooist's first).

I don't regret it really - it's a conversation starter and I can't see it anyway. Wouldn't get another one though.

debs26 · 04/06/2005 22:29

i have a bat on my left breast. absolutely love it. but had it done in a place i wont be showing off when everything has gone too far south!

spursmum · 04/06/2005 22:29

sorry to disagree people but i love them but only if they are tasteful and discreet. i have two on my shoulders where i can show them off if i want. i don't like too many, looks like insecurity when you are covered.

Earlybird · 04/06/2005 22:30

My sister has one of a cartoon character on her hip. I think her choice of design says alot about how young she was when she got it. I always wonder how she's going to feel about it when she's older.

i love both my tattoos and intend to get more
i have a chinese symbol for good luck on my right shoulder
i have an apple on my left shoulder to symbolise my son who is called adam and is the apple of my eye etc..lol

I want to get one that will represent my 3 angels from mc and when i have this baby will get one for them aswell.

jessicasmummy · 04/06/2005 22:34

I have the chinese symbol for woman on the back of my right shoulder and the sign for "leo" at the base of my spine.

I dont mind them really because i cant see them and they are easily covered.

May regret later in life, but not at present.

Dh doesnt have a tattoo and cant because of a skin condintion.

hercules · 04/06/2005 22:39

No.

vickiyumyum · 04/06/2005 23:17

yes and yes i love them on my man.
dh has 2 full sleeves and is half way through a custom back piece and i love it.
i always like my men a bit rough and ready as i'm a clean living girl

triceratops · 04/06/2005 23:22

dh has full back, half sleeves and legs. They are very well done and I like them. They are japanese style flowers, dragons, fish etc. The only thing about them that I don't like is that he refuses to go to a public swimming pool as it makes him self concious, too many people staring and children making comments. At the leaving party when he left his old job after four years he showed a colleague a bit of his ankle in the pub. Everyone was a bit taken aback as they didn't consider him to be the "type".

I have a japanese chrysanthamum on my back and hip in the same style so we match. I like tattoos, they are a nice way of expressing yourself. I think that people who had a tattoo of dumbo applied when they were 18 will usually still be the sort of person who likes dumbo when they are 80. Similarly if you meet someone who has an overtly nasty tattoo you can be fairly sure that they have not morphed into a lovely fluffy bunny type.

Ds draws tattoos on himself with felt tips, mostlty he chooses whales. He will probably rebel when he is a teenager and get pierced. Yuck. I hate piercings. But each to their own.

If I am going to have wrinkly baggy skin when I am old I would rather it had a nice picture on it than not.

BarbaraX · 04/06/2005 23:29

I have many on my arms, and one on my hand. the majority I dont regret, they are good work, but a couple of crappy ones I do. they are part of my history and and each of them, all represent/remind me of a phase in my life, good and bad phases. In fact, some of them I had them done partly to remind me of many things later on in life.
I had them done because I like them and i was part of a group/music scene where we all got into tattoos/and knew very good artists.
i have a very respectable professionalb job in the City of London, and i am ever so greatful that they gave me that opportunity where i expected to be discriminated against, especially as the one in my hand is always on shaw, and those on forearms pop out of my long sleeves occasionally. but I wear long sleeves all the time at work as tattoed arms give me that punk rock look that is not really suitablea to the business casual dress code. Also I want people to get to know me first for my ability to the job and not being put off by my tattoos.
I dont think it can be generalised that it is insecurity when you are covered at all. people have tattoos for various reasons and for the followers it is an art/ a for of expression as well as an identity. do not assume please.

lou33 · 04/06/2005 23:37

Women who have tattoos are usually raving lezzies.

JoolsToo · 04/06/2005 23:51

no, not never, not nohow

WigWamBam · 04/06/2005 23:54

Raving lezzies?

There are loads of MNers with tattoos who would disagree with you there, QE.

JoolsToo · 05/06/2005 00:00

who's lazy?

strugstu · 05/06/2005 00:05

would love to have a chinese symbol- dont think it would look right on my pale and flabby skin!

furthermore u cant give blood if u have one (and feel i have a responsibility to do that)

Tortington · 05/06/2005 00:05

anyone who doesn't have one is a wimp and probably a laura ashley pinko liberal herb growing one at that
